Prabhupāda Inspires His Disciples to Make Great Sacrifices for Kṛṣṇa
The path back to Godhead is paved with sincere dedication and absolute selflessness. To awaken his followers from the slumber of material illusion, Śrīla Prabhupāda consistently teaches that true spiritual life is synonymous with sacrifice (yajña). By voluntarily renouncing mundane desires and enthusiastically dedicating their time, wealth, and energy to the mission of Lord Caitanya, practitioners transform their lives into a perfect, continuous offering to the Supreme Lord.
The Fundamental Principle of Sacrifice
Real love requires definitive action. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that to develop genuine bhakti, one must learn to sacrifice their personal resources—specifically their life, wealth, intelligence, and words—for Kṛṣṇa's satisfaction. Rather than living for independent enjoyment, a true devotee understands that everything belongs to the Supreme Lord and that avoiding this divine sacrifice only leads to further entanglement in the stringent laws of material nature.
- For serving the Lord, we require to sacrifice our life, our wealth, our intelligence, and our words. One can serve the Lord with these four possessions; if not, with three, if not, then with two or even one.
- If we do not perform sacrifice, yajna, which means method of activities for pleasing the lord; it is stated in Bhagavad gita that any work not done for the Lord's satisfaction must entangle the doer in the complication of stringent laws of material nature.
- To love Krsna we don't require anything. Ahaituky apratihata. It is open for everyone, but we should learn to sacrifice for Krsna. That is the sign of love.
- We are teaching nothing, but training them how to love God, how they can sacrifice everything for God. So that is religion.
- Every member and worker must learn to sacrifice for Gods' sake that is the principle of this movement.
Sacrificing the Fruits of Labor and Wealth
Sacrifice must be practically demonstrated through one's daily livelihood. Just as a dutiful child places their earnings in the hands of their father, a sincere practitioner surrenders the fruits of their labor to Kṛṣṇa. Whether an individual is a brahmacārī collecting funds, or a devotee giving up their accumulation of wealth to print transcendental literature, offering one's resources to the Supreme Lord is the very beginning of spiritual realization.
- A good boy surrenders to his father means whatever he earns, the money, at the end of month he puts in the hand of the father: "Oh, this is my month's earnings"; similarly, we have to sacrifice the fruits of our labor to Krsna. This is the beginning of Krsna consciousness.
- Another principle is that those who are brahmacaris, they should sacrifice all of their income and collection for the Krishna Consciousness Movement.
- Krishna wants to see that the life is sacrificed, but also accumulation, money, should be given to Krishna. Life to Krishna and money to wife is not a good decision.
- The idea is like that of a Bible society in India which distributes millions of dollars in the shape of biblical literature without any consideration of return. Similarly, we have to sacrifice each $750 on this principle.
- Your ambition for chanting Hare Krishna exclusively is very good. But sacrificing the results of action is as good. A concrete example is Arjuna. He fought very chivalrously under the instructions of the Lord, and the Lord certified him to be the best devotee and friend of the Lord.
The Ultimate Sacrifice of Life and Time
The commitment to Kṛṣṇa consciousness leaves no room for superficiality. Śrīla Prabhupāda demands that his followers give their entire lives to the mission, warning them not to be pretenders. When a devotee truly sacrifices their life for Kṛṣṇa, they no longer waste a single moment on mundane sleeping, gossiping, or fickle desires; their every breath is unified in the active service of the Lord, rendering them as renounced as a sannyāsī.
- Every one of us as good as sannyasi because we have sacrificed everything for Krsna. Sannyasī does not mean simply having no wife and children, he's a sannyasi. No. Nothing to possess except Krsna. That is sannyasi.
- Sannyasa means to sacrifice everything for the Supreme, and if we link up our activities in such way as is enunciated by the Lord, then all the diversities become unified in Krishna Consciousness.
- We have sacrificed our life for Krsna's service, where is there scope for sleeping and gossiping? You can see in my example, not a single moment is wasted.
- You should not take Krsna's activities, Krsna consciousness, professionally, for livelihood. That is dangerous. Your life should be sacrifice for Krsna. That is wanted. Otherwise you shall be pretender.
- We have got very serious mission. Don't be fickle. When you have come and sacrificed your life for the mission, don't be fickle. Be very steady and capture Krsna's lotus feet tightly. You'll never be attacked by maya.
The Great Sacrifice of Preaching
Preaching Kṛṣṇa consciousness is an intense endeavor that demands immense physical and spiritual fortitude. Describing the extreme dedication of his preachers, Śrīla Prabhupāda compares their efforts to spending "gallons of blood" to save the conditioned souls. A first-class devotee is identified by their constant willingness to sacrifice their own comforts and endure difficult conditions to distribute the glories of the Lord to an exalted and needy world.
- Just try to help them by giving them Krsna consciousness and the best way to do this is to set the example by being very enthusiastic to do anything and everything to please Krishna, even we may have to make sacrifice.
- Krsna consciousness movement needs many exalted, learned persons who will sacrifice their lives to revive God consciousness throughout the world.
- That is the sign of the first-class devotee, that he is always willing to sacrifice everything to please Krishna by preaching His glories, even under all sorts of difficult conditions. I am very encouraged by your attitude of sincere Krishna Consciousness.
- We are spending our blood, gallons of blood, to make them (nondevotees) bhagyavan. This is the sacrifice of the devotees. Just like you are poor. Somebody, rich man, comes, "All right, take one million dollar from me." You get immediately rich.
Drawing Out Spontaneous Loving Dedication
Kṛṣṇa is fully self-satisfied and does not actually need our service; however, He deeply appreciates it when a devotee voluntarily sacrifices their energy and time out of spontaneous love. The true art of spiritual management is to awaken this unmotivated desire to give everything to God. Śrīla Prabhupāda contrasts these sincere, fully surrendered souls with mere "professional men," emphasizing that the movement relies entirely on those willing to joyfully lay down their lives for the supreme cause.
- It is very much pleasing to me that you are so much sacrificing everything for Krishna. Krishna will surely bless you.
- Krishna always appreciates when his devotee makes some sacrifice on His behalf, so there is no real difficulty under any conditions so long as we remember the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- If we supply nice nutritious foodstuff to the stomach, it is better for all the senses. Similarly, to serve Krishna more nicely is better for our own interests. Krishna is not in need of our service but if we sacrifice everything for Krishna, that is for our good. You should always remember this maxim.
- That is the art of management: to draw out spontaneous loving spirit of sacrificing some energy for Krishna. But where are so many expert managers? All of us should become expert managers and preachers. We should not be very much after comforts and become complacent or self-contented.
- I refused this Bhāgavata reader. He wants to come here, and no, we don't want these professional men. We want men who have sacrificed their life for God.
Renouncing Material Habits and Addictions
The material world constantly encourages the expansion of selfish bodily desires. To counteract this degradation, a devotee must perform the physical tapasya of sacrificing their old habits. Śrīla Prabhupāda profoundly appreciates his Western disciples who voluntarily gave up deep-rooted addictions to intoxication, meat-eating, gambling, and illicit sex, recognizing that these physical sacrifices—even down to sacrificing one's hair and beard—are essential for spiritual purity.
- I am so glad to learn that you have sacrificed your long beard and hair.
- Many thousands of boys and girls in the Western countries are seriously taking to this movement sacrificing many things. Especially they do not indulge in illicit sex life, gambling, meat eating, and intoxication.
- The boy Bruce is improving and becoming more interested. He has now sacrificed his hairs for Krsna - that is a good sign.
- We prescribe to our students no illicit sex-life, no meat-eating, no intoxication, no gambling, but they are not ends in themselves; the real end is how to serve Krishna and sacrifice everything for Him.
Authentic Tapasya vs. Artificial Religion
Genuine spiritual advancement is completely dependent on authentic austerity (tapasya). Śrīla Prabhupāda strictly warns his disciples against becoming sahajiyās—those who take spiritual life cheaply by artificially imitating advanced devotion without performing the necessary sacrifices. He praises the sincere Western devotees who, despite coming from affluent backgrounds with no material scarcity, gave up all their worldly comforts to purely execute these austerities for the well-being of the world.
- Don't try to do anything artificially. That is sahajiya, which means a class of men that take everything very cheap. You want to perform sacrifice so continuously read our Vedic scriptures and perform the Vaikuntha yajna.
- Our platform must be very simple, that there is no other sacrifice necessary for the well-being of the citizens save and except this Sankirtana yajna.
- They (these European and Americans) are pure devotees. They have no other business. They have sacrificed everything. They are coming from rich family, rich nation, educated, everything. There is no scarcity in their country.
- Without tapasya there is no question of making advancement. So if still the material nature is so much attractive to you that you are unable to sacrifice things in this way, then better you give up the whole thing and do as you like outside.
Sacrifice Within the Gṛhastha Āśrama
Renunciation is not limited to celibate monks. Śrīla Prabhupāda bestows immense praise upon his householder disciples who utilize their families, homes, and incomes entirely for Kṛṣṇa's service. By sacrificing personal interests to support the temples and actively training their children in the science of tapasya, these ideal gṛhasthas achieve the exact same spiritual standing as those in the renounced order of life.
- A Grhastha or householder like you, you are also tridandi. Because you have sacrificed everything, your life, your home, and your child, so you are a tridandi sannyasi, in fact.
- I am so glad to see that one of my sincere disciples has sacrificed everything for spreading Krishna Consciousness, and I am so pleased upon you that you are showing the example of an ideal householder.
- I thank you very much for your kind presentation which you have given, even sacrificing your husband's interest. I think, though, that your husband, Mukunda, is also pleased with this action.
- We train our children in Krsna consciousness, just be keeping them always attending regular program and associating with Krsna devotees, teaching them spiritual realization by giving the idea that sacrifice and tapasya to achieve life's highest goal is a nice way of life.
Never Sacrificing the Mission or Principles
While a devotee is called to sacrifice their material comforts, they must fiercely guard their spiritual integrity. Śrīla Prabhupāda firmly instructs his disciples never to sacrifice the core principles of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, their essential devotional programs, or the hard-earned reputation of the society for mundane relationships, artistic ambitions, or temporary conflicts. Maintaining strict purity is the one sacrifice that can never be compromised.
- My directions were not followed and now this is becoming a very burdensome situation unnecessarily. Why should we sacrifice the reputation of our Movement for one boy?
- We should be satisfied with our pictures hanging in our different temples. But we may not sacrifice our valuable time for becoming famous artists so that pictures may be sold like hotcakes.
- We should try to keep our friendship with everyone in the world, but we cannot sacrifice the principles of Krishna Consciousness on being employed by some relative of this world.
- While performing such dramas, always the actors must be Vaisnavas. Outsiders may help but devotees should have all the major roles. So you may perform such plays conveniently. It is a very nice program, but do not sacrifice other programs on account of it.
- You have written that you are wishing to leave for Toronto with Kanupriya, but this can be done only if there is no sacrifice of the Montreal temple. You are doing so nicely there as you have written, so why should you leave.
Performing Authorized Fire Sacrifices
Beyond internal renunciation, the principle of yajña is practically observed through the authorized Vedic rituals of the society. Śrīla Prabhupāda provides strict protocols for brahminical initiations, ensuring that sacred threads are given and the Gāyatrī mantra is imparted properly. He makes it clear that devotees must be appropriately trained and initiated before they are allowed to perform these sacred fire sacrifices themselves.
- Chant Gayatri mantra to them individually and let them hear and repeat. Then offer the threads on my behalf. The fire sacrifice should be performed as usual.
- Either you or Ranadhira can hold a fire sacrifice and present sacred threads to Kutila and Mahendra. One thing, you can get a copy of me reciting Gayatri Mantra from Rupanuga in New York but the tape must be heard through earphones into the right ear.
- I think you know all the procedures by now and you may give them the Gayatri as I have already prescribed by using the tape record of the mantras and performing the fire sacrifice.
- Now I have enclosed three sacred threads duly chanted by me. In Rupanuga Maharaja's absence, you may obtain a tape and instructions from Bali Mardan Maharaja in New York and hold one fire sacrifice.
- We do not allow devotees to perform sacrifices until they are properly initiated in the sacred thread ceremony.
The Supreme Satisfaction of Surrender
True spiritual advancement is realized when a community works with unified consultation, sacrificing all personal motives for the pleasure of the Lord. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that controlling our demonic desires and accepting only Kṛṣṇa's desire is the highest form of sacrifice. When disciples put aside their disagreements and give up their selfish motives to serve the spiritual master, they achieve a state of spiritual satisfaction that makes every austerity profoundly beautiful.
- At the present moment, we are not in a position to make charities but for the devotees we can sacrifice anything. So you can stop preparing prasadam for persons who are not willing to work neither to pay.
- Because you have worked so hard for Krishna, making all sacrifice without any personal selfish motive, therefore you are making such nice advancement in spiritual life. Thank you very much for helping me in this preaching work.
- My disciples have sacrificed their life for me. But you have got regard for me, but you cannot sacrifice your life for me.
- My standing request is this: Amongst yourselves there should not be any disagreement. Whatever you do, do it by joint consultation. Because our center of activities is Krsna, for His sake we can sacrifice our life, wealth, words, intelligence, everything.
- We should not allow our desires, demonic desires, to grow. That is called tapasya. Our desires we should sacrifice. That is called sacrifice. We should only accept Krsna's desire. That is the instruction of the Bhagavad-gita.
Conclusion
Sacrifice is the very lifeblood of the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement. By embracing tapasya and willingly offering everything they possess—their wealth, their habits, their families, and their very lives—for the satisfaction of the Lord, the followers of Śrīla Prabhupāda free themselves from the stringent laws of material nature. Ultimately, it is this profound spirit of joyful, uncompromising sacrifice that attracts the mercy of Kṛṣṇa and ensures the continuous expansion of the worldwide preaching mission.
