Prabhupāda Explains to His Disciples the Importance of Making No Compromises
The path back to the spiritual world is narrow and demands strict adherence to the laws of divine nature. In his extensive instructions, Śrīla Prabhupāda clarified that spiritual life requires a determined effort to make steady progress without giving in to material lenience. By refusing to compromise on the regulative principles, the purity of the preaching, or the required personal sacrifices, his followers could successfully conquer illusion and fulfill the mission of the Supreme Lord.
Making Steady Progress Through Strict Rules
The foundation of all spiritual advancement lies in the strict execution of the basic vows of initiation. To effectively navigate the dangers of the material world, Śrīla Prabhupāda demanded that his disciples take their promises seriously and avoid the temptation to demand unnecessary liberties. By remaining conservative and rigidly following the four regulative principles without any deviation, a devotee guarantees their steady progress. This uncompromising adherence to the rules completely protects the practitioner from the risk of falling back into material entanglement.
- The devotees must bear in mind they are promising to follow four regulative principles and chanting a minimum of 16 rounds of japa daily. Everyone should take very seriously this vow and make steady and sure progress in Krsna consciousness and go back to Godhead in this lifetime.
- As soon as the bhajana-kriya, immediately there is anartha-nivrttih syat. All unwanted things: no smoking, no intoxication, no illicit sex, no meat-eating, no gambling. We make this condition before making a student.
- By always following the principles, chanting, and performing regulated worship of the Deity, one can make steady advancement.
- We have to become conservative, follow the rules. Not that we give liberty, that "Whatever you like, you do, and at the same time you make progress, spiritual life." That is not possible.
- You should follow the four regulative principles without deviation. If you do these simple things, you will make steady advancement in Krishna Consciousness and there will be no fall downs.
Preaching the Philosophy Without Compromise
The potency of the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement depends entirely on presenting the absolute truth exactly as it is received from the disciplic succession. Whenever a preacher attempts to water down the philosophy or manufacture new ideas to appease the public, Śrīla Prabhupāda warned that the spiritual power is immediately lost. Devotees must preach with strong determination and pure understanding, completely avoiding sentimental provocations or apologies for their high standards. It is only through this unadulterated presentation that the movement can genuinely capture the attention of intelligent people.
- That drdha-vratah must be there, strong determination. Then it will go on. The scientists will come to learn and the psychiatrists will come to learn if you keep drdha-vratah. And as soon as you make compromise, then nobody will care for it.
- We don't make any adulteration or alteration or addition. No. We accept, as it is. That is our process. And if you accept, then our time is saved and we can make progress very quickly.
- Without being fully spiritualized, you cannot make others spiritualized. Therefore we have to follow the parampara system. The disciplic succession, as we get the knowledge, as we get the power, as we get the instruction, so we have to follow.
- We may make propaganda against animal slaughter, but that will not advance our real cause. Krsna consciousness is based on pure understanding, not by any sentimental provocation.
- I have heard that you want to make apologies to the police and others. This policy is not at all good. We cannot apologize. We have not done anything wrong. Our policy should be to protest against this persecution.
Making Sacrifices to Fulfill the Lord's Desires
True devotion requires giving up one's personal, material ambitions to satisfy the Supreme Personality of Godhead. To achieve success in bhakti-yoga, Śrīla Prabhupāda taught that his followers must willingly embrace tapasya, or voluntary austerity, without maintaining hidden selfish motives. Making compromises with the material energy by prioritizing personal comfort over spiritual duty completely halts one's advancement. When a disciple bravely sacrifices their own desires to push forward the preaching mission, Kṛṣṇa takes notice and guarantees their success.
- Without tapasya there is no question of making advancement. So if still the material nature is so much attractive to you that you are unable to sacrifice things in this way, then better you give up the whole thing and do as you like outside.
- Karma means to fulfill my desires, and bhakti means to fulfill Krsna's desires. That is the difference. Now you make your choice, whether you want to make your desires fulfilled or if you want to make Krsna's desire fulfilled.
- Krishna always appreciates when his devotee makes some sacrifice on His behalf, so there is no real difficulty under any conditions so long as we remember the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- Because you have worked so hard for Krishna, making all sacrifice without any personal selfish motive, therefore you are making such nice advancement in spiritual life. Thank you very much for helping me in this preaching work.
- In my opinion, because you wanted permission of your parents, you should wait at least for such time when your parents will permit you. But if you are strongly desirous, then you can disregard your father's desire and make advancement in Krsna consciousness.
Establishing a First-Class Spiritual Society
The purity of the society is paramount to its ability to deliver conditioned souls from ignorance. To protect the institution, Śrīla Prabhupāda directed his leaders to aggressively purge out any non-devotional elements and completely refuse entry to those who wish to cheat the system. A first-class society is one where advanced devotees associate together without compromise, creating a potent spiritual atmosphere. By carefully maintaining this high standard of association, the temples become powerful spiritual havens that automatically purify the public.
- You make your society so strong that you be not cheated, and others may not cheat. Then it will be first-class. And if you make another society of cheaters and cheated, there is no profit.
- You must have a resolution how to finish the development of New Vrndavana in the right sense of the term. At the same time, please make a very nice scheme to purge out the non-Vrndavana spirit that entered in our Society.
- By association, good association, everything is possible. Therefore you have to make this association of Krsna consciousness so perfect that anyone who comes in contact with that association, he becomes purified automatically.
- The best way to make advancement in Krishna consciousness is by the association of advanced devotees.
- We require many first class devotees to make the temple alive with transcendental bliss.
Testing True Advancement Against False Shows
In the pursuit of the absolute truth, there is no room for mechanical rituals or a superficial display of religion. A sincere disciple must maintain a deep internal determination rather than making a farce out of their spiritual vows. Śrīla Prabhupāda heavily criticized those who treated spiritual life lightly or tried to artificially imitate advanced stages of devotion. The true test of a devotee's uncompromising progress is simply observing whether their attachment to material desires is actually decreasing.
- He must practice with determination that "By practicing I'll be success." That is wanted. He has no determination, why should he make a show?
- You are welcome to take initiation, but if you are neglectful, if you want to make it a farce, that is your business. I cannot give you any protection.
- If somebody dozes, it gives me too much pain. And I asked you to go and sleep. It disturbs me, too much disturbs me. I tell you frankly. When I speak or when I speak if somebody dozes, better not to sit. Sleep twenty-four hours, but don't make show.
- The more you think as imperfect, the more you make actual progress in Krishna Consciousness. This hankering after perfection is seen in even the most perfect devotees. So we should never think of being perfect at any stage.
- Whether you are making progress in Krsna consciousness you have to test yourself, whether you are decreasing your material desires. That's all.
Conclusion
By boldly demanding that his followers make no compromises in their spiritual practice, Śrīla Prabhupāda protected the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement from deteriorating into a mundane religion. He proved that true success comes only through strict adherence to the rules, pure presentation of the philosophy, and the sincere willingness to sacrifice personal desires. Through this rigid but loving guidance, he ensured that any soul willing to put forth the effort could achieve the ultimate perfection of returning back to Godhead.
