Prabhupāda Explains to His Disciples That the Body is Kṛṣṇa's Property
The foundational teaching of the Bhagavad-gītā is that the living entity is not the material body, but an eternal spirit soul. However, a highly practical and nuanced understanding of this philosophy was provided by Śrīla Prabhupāda to his disciples. He taught that while a devotee must reject the bodily concept of life, they must never artificially neglect their physical form. Because the body of a surrendered soul is entirely dedicated to the preaching mission, it officially becomes Kṛṣṇa's property and must be expertly maintained, respected, and fully engaged in divine service.
The Body as Divine Property
Renunciation does not mean careless self-destruction. A severe warning against bodily neglect was issued by Śrīla Prabhupāda, who reminded his followers that their physical forms were no longer meant for sense gratification, but were dedicated instruments for Kṛṣṇa's service. He instructed his disciples that because the body belongs to the Supreme Lord, failing to keep it in a healthy, well-maintained condition is a failure to properly care for Kṛṣṇa's property.
- So far Jadurani is concerned, inform her that this body is Krsna's body. Therefore, she should take care of her health.
- This body belongs to Krishna and therefore we must always keep it in healthy condition to the best of our ability.
- We should always remember that our body is not for sense gratification; it is for Krishna's service only. And to render very good sound service to Krishna we should not neglect the upkeep of the body.
- I do not know what sort of ugra-karma you were doing, but whatever you do, you must be careful. Your body is dedicated to Krishna, therefore you should not be neglectful about your body.
- The body of a devotee should not be neglected as material. This has been warned by the Gosvamis, that we should not neglect any material thing if it can be used for Krsna Consciousness.
Keeping Fit for Service
Artificial austerities that damage one's health are rejected in the path of bhakti-yoga. A highly balanced approach to daily life was encouraged by Śrīla Prabhupāda, who advised his disciples to accept basic economic development, eat nourishing prasādam, and seek medical help when necessary. He taught that maintaining a regulated, fit, and healthy body is absolutely essential to ensure that illness does not become an obstacle to executing the worldwide preaching mission.
- If you are willing to offer your medical services to my students, when it is required, that will be very nice. It is important to keep the body fit and healthy so that we will not meet the obstacle of ill health while serving Krishna.
- It (our body) must be kept very carefully, without any neglect. Just like you are taking care of the temple because it is Krsna's place. Similarly, we should not take overcare, but some care we should take so that we may not fall diseased.
- So there may not be bodily disturbance it is necessary to maintain a regulated life and easily prosecute our Krishna Consciousness. I shall pray to Krishna for your quick recovery.
- The production of food is dependent on the rain and the rain of course is dependent on chanting Hare Krsna. Therefore let everyone chant Hare Krsna, eat nicely and keep their bodies fit and healthy. This is ideal life style.
- We have to accept economic development so far as we keep our body and soul together, fit for Krsna consciousness. We do not recommend that unnecessarily you should give trouble to the body.
Spiritualizing the Material Form
The material elements of earth, water, fire, and air can be entirely transformed through pure devotion. An incredible spiritual alchemy was described by Śrīla Prabhupāda, who explained that when a devotee consistently engages their mind, words, and physical energy in serving the Lord, their material body actually becomes spiritualized. He praised his disciples for not wasting a single moment, ensuring that their entire physical existence was completely absorbed in Kṛṣṇa consciousness.
- If we simply dedicate our mind always thinking of Krsna, if we dedicate our body - the body shall work simply for Krsna - and words, and we shall talk only for Krsna - if we take simply these three things as our life and soul, then you are perfect.
- It is so pleasing to me that you are giving service to Krishna by your intelligence, by your body, by your mind. Everything is very nice and this will make you more and more progressive in understanding Krishna Consciousness.
- Simply by chanting and hearing you spiritualize yourself. So a day will come when this material body also will be fully spiritualized. Fully spiritualized means there will be no more material activities; simply these spiritual activities will be there.
- If you become fully Krsna conscious, there is nothing material. Your body's spiritual, your mind is spiritual, your soul is already spiritual - everything is spiritual.
- I am very, very glad that you have got this feeling to not waste even a single moment in the service of the body and mind but to utilize very carefully every moment of life in the loving service of the Lord.
Overcoming the Bodily Concept of Life
True unity and spiritual progress are impossible as long as one identifies with their temporary physical vessel. A profound universal vision was cultivated by Śrīla Prabhupāda, who taught his worldwide society to completely disregard outward bodily designations. He explained that labels such as American, Indian, male, or female are utterly meaningless on the spiritual platform, and that recognizing the soul within is the only way to genuinely advance in the saṅkīrtana movement.
- The concept of European, American, or Indian is based on the bodily platform. So long one is under the impression that he is this body, he cannot make much progress in this movement.
- Anyone who is coming to Krsna consciousness in any country, they are forgetting their bodily consciousness. Just like in our society we have got members from different parts of the world.
- Our process is the more we advance in Krsna consciousness, we become transcendental to this bodily concept of life.
- So you please continue your devotional service, cooking etc, and you can also keep giving Bhagavatam class if you like. Women in our movement can also preach very nicely. Actually male and female bodies, these are just outward designations.
- When one is in Krishna Consciousness, he no more feels any bodily pains and pleasures. After all, we are not this body. But we should make progress steadily by following the rules and regulations, not making experiment.
Transcending Bodily Miseries and Death
The material body is a machine designed for eventual failure, bringing inevitable pain and disease. A highly sober perspective on suffering was delivered by Śrīla Prabhupāda, instructing his disciples not to be overly disturbed by bodily miseries. He taught that the ultimate purpose of this temporary human form is not to eliminate physical pain, but to practice remembering Kṛṣṇa so flawlessly that at the time of death, the soul never has to accept another material body again.
- As long as the body will be there, there will only be pain. Pleasure is only a misconception. Do not be sorry if you are in an "unfortunate" situation. It can also be fortunate if you take advantage by becoming serious to become Krsna consciousness.
- Our Krsna consciousness movement is not meant for, I mean to say, mitigating the so-called sufferings of the body. When there is body, there must be suffering. So we should not be very much disturbed by the sufferings of the body.
- If we are practiced to think of Krsna always, naturally, at the time of death, at the time of end of this body, if we are so fortunate to think of Krsna, His form, then we become materially free, no more this material body.
- We have to practice in this way, that when all functions of this body will be stopped at the time of death, oh, we shall remember some way or other, Krsna. Then successful.
- You have been taught to serve Krsna, and with Krsna we'll live eternally. Our life is eternal. A temporary disappearance of this body, it doesn't matter. Body is meant for disappearance. So live forever by serving Krsna.
Conclusion
By perfectly balancing absolute spiritual philosophy with practical bodily care, a sustainable path to perfection was established by Śrīla Prabhupāda. He ensured that his disciples understood that while they are eternal spirit souls, the physical body is a sacred tool entrusted to them by the Supreme Lord for the execution of bhakti. Through his deeply compassionate guidance, he trained his followers to maintain their health, overcome all material designations, and transform their physical existence into a divine offering, guaranteeing their ultimate return to the spiritual sky.
