Prabhupāda Explains to His Disciples That They Have Not Manufactured Anything
The purity of a spiritual movement is defined not only by what its members do, but by what they refuse to do. Śrīla Prabhupāda strictly trained his followers to understand that their success depends entirely on repeating the message of the paramparā without alteration. By embracing what they have not done—they have not manufactured philosophy, they have no secret mantras, and they have no material anxiety—devotees remain perfectly situated in pure bhakti-yoga.
Preaching Without Manufacturing
In the modern age, many so-called gurus invent new meditation techniques or twist scripture to attract followers. Śrīla Prabhupāda heavily warned against this, declaring that concocting ideas is the greatest danger in spiritual life. He taught that the disciples' only duty is to act as faithful messengers, repeating the exact instructions found in the Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam without addition or subtraction.
- Bhagavad-gita is the universal book of knowledge, and our Krsna consciousness movement is based on this Bhagavad-gita. We have not manufactured anything.
- Hear and repeat, hear and repeat. You haven't got to manufacture. Any one of us, simply if you reproduce the purport which I have given in the Bhagavata, you become a good speaker.
- We are preaching Krsna consciousness. What Krsna has said, we are trying to spread. This is genuine, the simple thing. We have not manufactured anything, Transcendental Meditation or like that. That is not our business.
- We haven't got to manufacture. And as soon as you manufacture, fall down. Evam parampara-praptam imam rajarsayah... This manufacturing idea is very, very dangerous in spiritual life. Whatever little success is there for me, I did not manufacture any idea.
Relying on Vedic Authority Over Research
Material scientists and philosophers waste their entire lives taxing their brains in a futile attempt to discover the absolute truth through imperfect senses. In contrast, devotees save immense time by simply accepting the perfect knowledge descending through the śruti (Vedic literature). Because the Vedic treasury of knowledge is already complete, the disciples do not have to engage in tedious, independent research.
- Our task is very easy. Everything is there. Our Vedic literature is so full, so treasure of knowledge, great treasure of knowledge, we haven't got to make research, search out where is the truth.
- We accept the Vedic injunction as truth. We haven't got to make research. We save time. So according to Vedic civilization, whatever is stated in the Vedas, we take it, fact. That's all. Sruti-pramanam.
- We say there are 900,000 forms of life within the water. We have not gone within the water; neither as biologist we have studied. We have taken the perfect information from the perfect source. We say 900,000. This is called Vedic knowledge.
- We are simply executing what Vasudeva has spoken. That's all. So our task is very easy, because we haven't got to manufacture, tax our brains, to create something nonsense. No.
No Secrets and No Quarrels
Unlike cheating spiritual groups that charge money for whispered, secret mantras, the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement operates with complete transparency. The mahā-mantra is freely broadcast in the streets for the benefit of all. Furthermore, because devotees see every living entity as a spirit soul, they hold no sectarian distinctions, avoid political entanglements, and have no quarrel with other religious faiths or the general public.
- We say we have no secret mantra. Our mantra, Hare Krsna, is open to everyone. Why it should be secret.
- Every religion as a matter of principle accepts authority, God being the supreme authority, and His representative also as authority. So we have no quarrel with any type of religion but we simply teach that awaken your dormant love of God.
- We don't hate hippies. We have nothing... But these people misunderstand. That is... That is another thing. We welcome everyone. We have no such distinction.
- The young Indian men are not joining our movement. So for conducting all this business we require 50-100 men, foreigners who are trained up. We have no business to take part in politics.
Freedom from Material Anxiety
In the material world, people are constantly burdened by the anxiety of maintaining their livelihood and protecting their wealth. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda assured his disciples that because they work twenty-four hours a day exclusively for Kṛṣṇa's pleasure, they do not need to worry about their maintenance. Having no fixed mundane income, no hired workers, and no personal business, the devotees remain fully protected and blissfully free from all scarcity.
- Because we understand that Krishna is our Protector under all circumstances, we have no more any anxiety, so we become very liberal and tolerant of all kinds of seeing others' sinful activities, and we see them innocent victims of maya.
- So far we are concerned, we have no business, we have no profession. We do not know what we shall eat tomorrow. Or in the evening. We are in such a position. But we have no anxiety. You can see practically.
- Why salary? Krsna's servant. We are eternal servant. That is the beauty of our institution. We have no hired men (in New Mayapura). Unless one is sincere, why he'll work?
- We are spending in all the branches eighty thousand dollars per month. But by grace of Krsna we have no scarcity; everything is supplied.
Conclusion
The strength of the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement lies in its absolute fidelity to the instructions of the paramparā. By strictly refusing to manufacture new philosophies, keeping no secrets, and avoiding mundane quarrels and anxieties, the disciples remain pure and potent. Through this uncompromising transmission of the Vedic science, Śrīla Prabhupāda proved that the simple repetition of Kṛṣṇa's words is the most powerful force for changing the world.
