Prabhupāda Explains That Preaching Depends on Exemplary Behavior
The success of the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement does not rely on massive academic scholarship or political maneuvering, but entirely on the pure, personal conduct of its members. A profound standard of integrity was established by Śrīla Prabhupāda, who taught his disciples that they could only convince others to surrender to Kṛṣṇa if they were strictly practicing the philosophy themselves. He ensured that his followers understood that their exemplary behavior, spotless character, and tolerant dealings with one another were the greatest preaching weapons they possessed.
The Foundation of Personal Behavior
To effectively change the hearts of the conditioned souls, a preacher must possess genuine spiritual potency. A strict fundamental rule for all outreach was laid down by Śrīla Prabhupāda, citing the example of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu: apani acari prabhu jivere sikhaya—one must teach by personal behavior. He warned his disciples that attempting to instruct others while failing to follow the regulative principles oneself would render their preaching completely sterile and ineffective.
- Human being, our business is to teach and become ideal ourself. Apani acari prabhu jivere sikhaya (Lord Caitanya). We have to teach by our personal behavior.
- First behave yourself perfectly; then teach others to become perfect. That is preacher.
- Lord Caitanya personally used to practice Himself the injunctions and then He used to teach others. That is our principle: Unless one is perfectly behaved person, he cannot teach others.
- If a preacher behaves properly in devotional service, he will be able to convert others. Otherwise, his preaching will have no effect.
- Our Krsna consciousness movement, preaching, depends on personal behavior.
Transforming Character and Winning the Public
The most undeniable proof of the authenticity of the movement is the radical transformation of its practitioners. Immense pride was frequently expressed by Śrīla Prabhupāda regarding the innocent and pure character developed by his Western students. He noted that their dramatic shift from deeply sinful lives to strict Vaiṣṇava behavior naturally astounded the public, proving that the chanting of the mahā-mantra possesses the absolute power to elevate anyone to the highest standard of human civilization.
- Practically see how easy to practice this method of sankirtana, Hare Krsna, and how quickly it acts. This is a fact; not a story. We have got hundreds of students in different centers - just see their behavior, just see their face, how they are advancing.
- How many Mahesh Yogi has brought, disciples like this? This is my answer. Thousands of them are working here on my behalf. Just see their character and behavior.
- Our all students, say one or two years before, they were not like this. They were taken to so many sinful activities. But since they've taking to this Krsna consciousness, chanting Hare Krsna, now see their features, behavior, character and you will be astonished.
- Everywhere people express this astonishment at the sincerity of the devotees, and we take great pride in the transcendental behavior of our students.
- The six couples who are working very hard there have been very much appreciated by the people of London, and their character, behavior, and devotion are attracting sincere people to our movement. I want similar thousands of couples for my disciples.
Practical Application Over Theoretical Knowledge
True spiritual realization is measured not by how many verses one has memorized, but by how one acts in their daily life. A severe warning against hypocrisy was issued by Śrīla Prabhupāda, instructing his followers never to become bluffers. He taught that theoretical knowledge is practically useless if it is not accompanied by the spotless internal and external behavior of a pure Vaiṣṇava, ensuring that the movement creates genuine saints rather than mere mundane scholars.
- Here in our institute, we teach all the students practically how to become God conscious. Theoretical knowledge will not help us. There must be practical behavior.
- One should behave himself as Krsna conscious. Then he will be able to make others Krsna conscious - not by theoretical knowledge, but by behavior.
- My request to you all who are in Krsna consciousness movement - do not be a bluffer. Behave in your life how to become Krsna conscious and teach others. Then the whole world will be benefited, and the Yamaduta will not come to them.
- Unless one is situated as pure Vaisnava in his dealing, in his behavior, inside and outside, he should not become a preacher because it will not be effective; neither one should hear from such person.
- This Krsna consciousness movement through music, philosophy, spiritual culture, and personal behavior culminating in ideal character of the devotees. All these heavenly contributions combined together will certainly bring about a major change in the life of Western people.
The Responsibility of Leaders and Sannyāsīs
Those who hold administrative or renounced positions within the society carry the heavy burden of representing the entire institution. A very strict standard was demanded by Śrīla Prabhupāda for the GBC members and sannyāsīs, instructing them that their foremost duty was to rise early, chant sixteen rounds, and remain completely free from any behavioral black spots. Because the public scrutinizes the leadership, their strict adherence to Kṛṣṇa's orders ensures the credibility of the entire movement.
- Sannyasis are topmost leaders they should see that they are chanting 16 rounds, rising early in the morning and they should also rise early, behave like that and if there is any discrepancy it should not be ended by fighting.
- You are sannyasi and the people will automatically respect you. So be ideal in behavior following strictly the rules and regulations.
- Neglecting the principles means neglecting Krishna's order. So you are one of the chief men of this Institution, kindly maintain your behavior to the standard so that others will follow and the whole thing may go on nicely.
- We are now growing in volume all over the world dealing with public money. People have respect for our movement. Now it is time for GBC members to be very very careful so that people may not point out any black spot in the behavior of our society.
- If we can maintain this institution rigidly, according to the order, then many people will be benefited. By seeing our behavior, by character, they will become. Apani acari prabhu jiveri siksaya. The leader should be ideal.
Tolerance and Cooperative Dealings
Exemplary behavior does not only mean strictly following rules; it also requires profound compassion and patience in dealing with others. A mature standard of interpersonal relationships was taught by Śrīla Prabhupāda, reminding his leaders that because creating a devotee is extremely difficult, they must treat incoming volunteers with great care. He instructed them to be tolerant of the lingering bad habits of neophytes and to avoid fighting among themselves, proving their advancement through highly cooperative and understanding behavior.
- A devotee is always very understanding if there is some discrepancy behavior on the part of nondevotees, and even some devotees misbehave, he is always very tolerant and understanding.
- We have to all cooperate amongst ourselves, otherwise what will people think if we ourselves fight with one another? A devotee is always ideal in behavior.
- Everyone comes to us to offer voluntary service, so amongst ourselves there must be good behavior. One may not feel sorry. So the leaders must take precautions as far as possible.
- We recruit devotees with great difficulty. So they must be well-treated. New men may not always behave so nicely but we must be tolerant.
- Although we find in the neophyte devotee some bad behavior due to his past experience, so we should not take him as nondevotee.
Conclusion
By placing the ultimate burden of proof on the character of his followers, a society of genuine, living saints was cultivated by Śrīla Prabhupāda. He ensured that his disciples understood that preaching is not simply about speaking the philosophy, but about embodying it flawlessly in their daily actions. Through his uncompromising insistence on ideal behavior, he guaranteed that the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement would remain pure, immensely attractive, and practically transformative for the entire world.
