Prabhupāda Explains How Anyone Can Become His Disciple
Śrīla Prabhupāda’s approach to accepting disciples was both remarkably inclusive and strictly principled. He extended the mercy of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu to anyone, regardless of their material background, nationality, or past conditioning. However, he made it abundantly clear that this open invitation required a serious commitment to following the regulative principles, chanting the holy names, and sincerely cooperating with the mission.
The Universal Invitation
The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is meant for the ultimate benefit of all humanity. According to the authorized pañcarātrikī-vidhi, anyone with even a slight inclination toward spiritual life can be given the chance to advance, provided they are properly trained by a bona fide spiritual master and follow the principles.
- According to Vedic sastra, anyone who is properly trained up under a bona fide spiritual master, can become twice born.
- Pancaratriki-vidhi means if any one has a little inclination for spiritual development, he should be given chance. This initiation means to give chance.
- Anyone who has accepted this Krsna consciousness movement, if he follows the principles, then he's surely going to home, back to home, back to Godhead. That is certain. But if you deviate, if you become attracted by maya, that is your business.
- Krsna consciousness movement is now well spread all over the world. The framework is there. So anyone can go and preach this Krsna consciousness movement very easily and people will take it.
- Anyone who is coming to Krsna consciousness in any country, they are forgetting their bodily consciousness. Just like in our society we have got members from different parts of the world.
The Essential Conditions
While the doors to the spiritual world are open to everyone, becoming a disciple is not a casual or whimsical affair. Śrīla Prabhupāda demanded strict adherence to the four regulative principles and temple rules, emphasizing that initiation requires a firm commitment to a sinless life.
- I do not accept anyone as my disciple that "You can do whatever you like." No. My first condition is that "You must be sinless."
- Anyone who comes to become my disciple, this is my first proposal, that "If you agree, then you come." It is not that you can do anything nonsense you like, and you become my disciple.
- We do not allow anyone become a preacher unless he is strictly following the Vaisnava principles of no eating meat, fish, or eggs; no sex outside of marriage; no gambling; and no taking any kind of intoxication whatsoever.
- Yes, if anyone agrees to live with us in the temple he must without any exception follow the four rules and regulations, plus the other regulative principles, otherwise he may be asked kindly to leave the temple and live outside.
- Anyone who is unwilling to follow our regulated principles, you should not live or associate closely with such a person.
The Power of Sincere Service
When a disciple sincerely surrenders and cooperates with the desires of Kṛṣṇa and the spiritual master, success is guaranteed. The Supreme Lord, who is situated in everyone's heart, eagerly responds to this voluntary service by providing divine intelligence and guidance from within.
- Anyone sincerely serving the spiritual master is a pure devotee.
- Anyone who serves the Lord sincerely with love and affection is certainly instructed by the Lord from within.
- Anyone who voluntarily cooperates with Krishna's desire He responds to his call very eagerly. Krishna descends to teach us Bhagavad-gita begging our cooperation and anyone who cooperates with Him becomes blessed.
- In our Krishna Consciousness Movement, anyone who has got full blessings and confidence of the Spiritual Master, and therefore Krishna, his success is sure.
- Krishna does not require anyone's help or service, but if we serve Him, even in a very small capacity, He will accept it. So that is our only hope.
Living and Serving Together
Temple life is established to provide devotees with an environment of continuous, twenty-four-hour engagement in devotional service. Śrīla Prabhupāda envisioned a cooperative society where service is rendered voluntarily, joyfully, and without the mentality of a mundane bureaucracy.
- All the devotees should be satisfied. They have given their lives to Krishna, so we should see they are always happy. Their service is voluntary. It is not that we can force anyone to do anything. If we do they will go away and that is a great loss.
- Everyone is offering voluntary service. So not that anyone is paid, and if he cannot, dismiss or... Yes. This bureaucracy is not... Train him. Train him. If he does not know, train him. But things must be done very nicely by cooperation. That is wanted.
- Anyone who lives in the temple must agree to follow the rules and regulations without fail.
- They must be engaged twenty-four hours. That is wanted. It is not a lazy free hotel. Anyone lives, he must be engaged twenty-four hours.
- Temple is meant for rendering service to the Lord. So if anyone is rendering service to the Lord, he can live. But not for sense gratification. Those grhasthas who still have desire for sense gratification, they may live outside.
Developing Vaiṣṇava Qualities
Spiritual advancement is visibly measured by a disciple's transformation in character. Śrīla Prabhupāda expected his followers to give up enviousness and petty disputes, instead cultivating genuine humility, tolerance, and the ability to live amicably with all living beings.
- Do not fight with anyone, try to remain always very humble and meek like the advanced Vaisnava devotee, always thinking yourself lower than the straw in the street and more tolerant than the tree.
- If anyone becomes humbler than the grass and more tolerant than the tree, it is understood that he has accepted a Spiritual Master.
- Nobody should criticize anyone. Because everyone is engaged in the service of the Lord, according to one's capacity.
- Your qualification is that you can live amicably with anyone. Even if one is an offender to you, you do not become agitated. This is a Vaisnava qualification.
- If anyone becomes spiritually advanced, the agents of maya will criticize. So therefore you have to become tolerant.
Preaching and Fixed Determination
The greatest welfare work for humanity is the distribution of transcendental knowledge. Śrīla Prabhupāda repeatedly emphasized that anyone who simply memorizes and repeats his purports or distributes his books is performing the highest form of kīrtana and securing the ultimate spiritual benediction.
- Preaching is our first business and ordering is routine work. Anyone can learn and manage the ordering department, but preaching requires special qualification.
- Hear and repeat, hear and repeat. You haven't got to manufacture. Any one of us, simply if you reproduce the purport which I have given in the Bhagavata, you become a good speaker.
- Book distribution is brihat kirtana. It is literally kirtana in the sense that the books are spoken and therefore anyone who reads a book is hearing.
- Anyone who distributes these transcendental literatures, he is also benefitted. Therefore sankirtana is the prime benediction for the age.
- I do not think you are any more able to leave Krsna because He does not let anyone go away who has once come forward in His service.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda's teachings regarding his disciples present a perfect balance of boundless mercy and uncompromising standards. He joyfully invited anyone from any corner of the globe to take up the practice of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, promising that success was guaranteed for those who were sincere. However, he also stressed that true initiation is demonstrated through action by strictly following the regulative principles, cultivating pure Vaiṣṇava qualities, and dedicating one's life to the preaching mission of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Through this process, anyone can transcend their material conditioning and return back home, back to Godhead.
