Prabhupāda's Presence Continues through His Vāṇī
Śrīla Prabhupāda’s presence is a living reality for every sincere disciple. He consistently taught that the relationship between the spiritual master and the student is based on the vāṇī, or the instructions, which exist eternally. While he was physically present to guide the neophyte stages of his movement, he meticulously trained his followers to find his presence in his books, his lectures, and the mission itself. For Śrīla Prabhupāda, the physical disappearance of the spiritual master is merely a change of circumstances, as the spiritual connection remains unbroken for those who remain rigid in their service to Kṛṣṇa.
The Eternity of Sound Vibration
Śrīla Prabhupāda taught that the real presence of the spiritual master is found in his words. He encouraged his disciples to accept the vibration of the transcendental sound as his living presence. By hearing and following what they have received from him, they are in direct contact with him, regardless of time or space.
- Although a physical body is not present, the vibration should be accepted as the presence of the spiritual master, vibration. What we have heard from the spiritual master, that is living.
- I understand that you are feeling my absence. Krishna will give you strength. Physical presence is immaterial; presence of the transcendental sound received from the spiritual master should be the guidance of life.
- Never think that I am absent from you. Physical presence is not essential; presence by message (or hearing) is real touch.
- We should take advantage of the vani, not the physical presence, because the vani continues to exist eternally.
Guidance Beyond Physical Limits
Śrīla Prabhupāda often reassured his disciples that his distance from them did not diminish his presence or his blessings. He explained that if they were chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa and following his instructions, he was spiritually with them. He shared that he himself felt the personal guidance of his guru even though his spiritual master was no longer physically present.
- As far as my blessing is concerned it does not require my physical presence. If you are chanting Hare Krishna there and following my instructions, reading the books, taking only Krsna prasadam etc.
- I shall remain your personal guidance, physically present or not physically, as I am getting personal guidance from my Guru Maharaja.
- I went to your country for spreading this information of Krishna Consciousness and you are helping me in my mission although I am not physically present there but spiritually I am always with you.
- I do not follow why you should feel uneasy in my presence. The easiest thing for you and for all others is to follow my instructions wherever you may be or I may be.
Maintaining Standards in His Absence
To ensure the longevity of the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement, Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasized that his presence was felt through the maintenance of the standards he set. Whether in Deity worship or the administrative alertness of the GBC, he requested his students to carry on with the same dedication as if he were sitting right before them.
- The Deity worship should be done just in the way it was carried out in my presence. You should see that such a high standard is maintained and that there are no irregularities. Irregularity means breaking the schedule.
- Stick to our principle, and see our GBC is very alert. Then everything will go on, even I am not present. Do that. That is my request.
- I came here alone in 1965. Gradually the young men here took the philosophy very nicely, and now they themselves are spreading and opening many branches, even without my presence. Similarly, you can do this also, under my instructions.
- All the devotees are now appreciating the presence of their Spiritual Master by following His instructions although He is no longer physically present. This is the right spirit.
The Spirit of Eternal Service
Śrīla Prabhupāda reminded his followers that a life dedicated to the service of Kṛṣṇa is eternal. He explained that just as the Lord is present everywhere, the devotee who does service to the Lord lives forever through that service. His presence continues in the hearts of his disciples and in the global movement he established.
- Whether I am present or not present, it doesn't matter. As Krsna is living eternally, similarly, living being also lives eternally. But kirtir yasya sa jivati: "One who has done service to the Lord lives forever."
- Now the Krsna consciousness movement is going on in my presence. Now after my departure, if you do not do this, then it is lost. If you go on as you are doing now, then it will go on.
- That is the real presence. Physical presence is not important.
- I regret I shall not be able to physically attend your Rathayatra at Buffalo, but my presence is always with the devotees who are serving so nicely.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda’s life was an example of how to live in the presence of one's spiritual master. He showed that by keeping the instructions of his Guru as one's life and soul, the physical absence of the teacher becomes secondary to the eternal connection of vāṇī. He has left his disciples with all the tools necessary to experience his presence daily—through his books, the Holy Name, and the collective service of the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement. As long as his followers remain faithful to the principles he established, Śrīla Prabhupāda remains personally present to lead them back home, back to Godhead.
