Never Be Happy - Illusion of Independent Material Enjoyment
The conditioned soul's relentless pursuit of independent happiness in the material world is fundamentally flawed. As explained extensively by Śrīla Prabhupāda, any attempt to enjoy life separately from the Supreme Lord—whether through political systems, technological advancements, or sensual pleasures—will inevitably end in frustration. Real peace and satisfaction can only be found by abandoning the illusion of independence and surrendering to Lord Kṛṣṇa.
The Godless Civilization
Modern society is largely built upon the principles of godlessness, attempting to secure peace through economic and political maneuvers like capitalism or communism. However, because these systems ignore the Supreme Lord, they create a civilization that is inherently unstable and anxiety-ridden. Without acknowledging the true proprietor of everything, such societies remain disconnected from the source of all joy and can never be happy.
- It is not very good business that people are pulling on, pushing on a type of civilization, godless civilization. They'll never be happy, because we are so controlled that after death we have to accept, tatha dehantara-praptih, You cannot stop death.
- This Sankirtana Party, backed by literatures and books, will certainly bring in a great change in the modern civilization. Godless civilization can never be happy.
- Either the world is run on the principle of communistic philosophy or capitalistic philosophy, it will never be happy. Here is the formula, that everyone should be satisfied with the profit that he can easily make. That's all.
- If the people refuse to take Krsna consciousness, they'll never be happy. This is a fact.
The Illusion of Independence
The core disease of conditioned life is the desire to act independently of God, adopting the mentality of the supreme enjoyer, or puruṣa. Seduced by the illusions of māyā, the living entity concocts endless plans to find satisfaction on their own terms. While Kṛṣṇa provides the facilities for such material attempts, He also clearly warns that true happiness is utterly impossible within this artificial, disconnected state.
- Independently means if we want to enjoy life according to my whims. That is called so-called independence. But by such independence, we are never happy, so we transmigrate for this so-called illusory happiness from one body to another.
- If we want to enjoy this material world, Krsna will provide all facilities. You can enjoy. But Krsna says that you'll never be happy.
- We cannot be happy in this purusa mentality to enjoy this material world. We can never be happy.
- Yah devi, he is situated, keeping the conditioned souls in dream. He is simply dreaming, "I'll be happy in this way, I'll be happy in that way." And that is mental concoction. He'll be never be happy.
Displeasing the Supreme Father
By rejecting the authority of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the conditioned soul is akin to a rebellious child who leaves the comfort of a wealthy father's home to wander the streets. A living entity without the Lord's shelter is like a masterless street dog, constantly suffering in the harsh conditions of material existence. It is a simple truth that as long as we continue to displease our supreme father, we cannot find true peace anywhere in the universe.
- If we keep displeasing our supreme father, we shall never be happy within this material world, in either the upper or lower planetary systems.
- He who knows God, however, becomes freed from all possible sinful reactions, which no amount of piety can accomplish. If we reject God we can never be happy.
- You shall never be happy - this is perfect instruction - unless you go back to home, back to Godhead. Just like a mad boy, he has forsaken his father. His father is rich man, everything is there, but he has become hippie.
- A dog is never happy without a master. Then it is a street dog. That is the difference between household dog and a street dog.
The Animalistic Life of Sin
When humanity degrades into an animalistic lifestyle focused solely on eating, sleeping, mating, and defending, true happiness becomes entirely unreachable. Sinful activities, such as rampant animal killing and widespread intoxication, strip away human intelligence and bind society in endless karmic reactions. A society of thieves that exists only for base sense gratification has no ultimate aim in life, ensuring a perpetual state of misery and dissatisfaction.
- As a human being if he lives like cats and dogs, he'll never be happy. Because there is no happiness, therefore he takes these drugs, to forget. This is the drug philosophy.
- As soon as the calf is there, in front of the mother they are killed. You see? So if these things go on without any brain, without any intelligence, you may make hundreds of organization, the society will never be happy. This is our verdict.
- A society of thieves can never be happy, because they have no aim in life. The gross materialist thieves have no ultimate goal of life. They are simply directed to sense gratification; nor do they have knowledge of how to perform yajnas.
- So long life is there, eating must be there, sleeping must be there. But not that sleeping twenty, twenty-five hours, and sex as much as they like, and eating voraciously. In this way if we keep our civilization, it will never be happy.
The Only Solution: Surrender
The ultimate instruction of all Vedic literature is to abandon the futile struggle for material enjoyment and surrender to the Supreme Lord. Kṛṣṇa does not demand this surrender for His own benefit, but rather to save the conditioned souls from their self-inflicted misery. By giving up individual, selfish plans and taking up the process of bhakti, or devotional service, anyone can easily overcome the miseries of the material world and become genuinely happy.
- Krsna is asking all us, all rascals, that, "You are manufacturing so many things for becoming happy. You'll never be happy, rest assured. But surrender to Me, and I will make you happy." This is Krsna consciousness, that's all.
- If he acts individually then he will never be happy. But if you act Krsna consciously, then you will be happy. That is the whole instruction of Bhagavad-gita.
- Our humble attempt to propagate the Krsna consciousness movement all over the world is the only remedy that can bring about a peaceful and happy life. We can never be happy without the mercy of the Supreme Lord - tvad-upeksitanam.
- It is not for God's interest that He wants you. It is for your interest. If you do otherwise, you will never be happy. This is the only way. Sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja.
Conclusion
The repeated failures of human society to establish a peaceful world are a direct result of ignoring the supreme authority of God. Through his compassionate teachings, Śrīla Prabhupāda repeatedly emphasizes that any plan, philosophy, or societal structure devoid of Kṛṣṇa consciousness is doomed to fail. We cannot artificially extract joy from the material energy while maintaining a rebellious, independent mentality. It is only by giving up the futile attempt to be the supreme enjoyer and lovingly surrendering to Lord Kṛṣṇa that the eternal soul can finally experience the boundless happiness it so desperately seeks.
