Nefarious Activities - The Supreme Mercy of Lord Caitanya
The current age is characterized by widespread sinful behavior and Godlessness. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that while previous ages required the Supreme Lord to physically kill demons to stop their nefarious activities, the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement operates under the supreme compassion of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, who kills the sin while saving the sinner.
The Duty of Good Government
To maintain peace in society, strict leadership is absolutely essential. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that a genuine, Vedic government must vigilantly check the nefarious activities of modern cheaters, false scientists, and the disturbing agents of Kali-yuga.
- That (Maharaja Pariksit's) is the way of good government. The disturbing elements like the personality of Kali will always try to extend their nefarious activities, but it is the duty of the able state to check them by all means.
- If there are good leaders, then they will see that the cheating scientists, they're spoiling state money. They'll be stopped in their nefarious activities. They could not become successful in the moon expedition. Now they have made another plan.
- At the end of the Srimad-Bhagavatam it is said that even though all nefarious activities of the personality of Kali are present, there is a great advantage in the age of Kali. One can attain salvation simply by chanting the holy name of the Lord.
- If by the asirvada he can get some tenants, this is . . . all these men, they simply want asirvada. They don't want Krsna. They want asirvada so that their nefarious activities may continue peacefully.
The Rejection of the Next Life
Demons desperately want to avoid accountability for their actions. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that atheistic men deliberately deny the existence of a next life because acknowledging karma would force them to abandon their nefarious activities and sense gratification.
- They are thinking that this life is all in all and there is no next life, because they cannot think of . . . duskrtinah, if for them there is next life, then they have to stop their nefarious activities. But they do not like that.
- Such activities (for sense gratification) are not good because in this way one creates another body for his next life, as punishment for his nefarious activities.
- He (Sukadeva Gosvami) points out that a demon can lose everything because of his nefarious activities.
- The impious and the nondevotees are against the principles of the Vedas, and so such persons are always hampered from making advances in their nefarious activities.
Demoniac Association and Envy
Throughout Vedic history, bad association has been the catalyst for terrible atrocities. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that envious figures like Duryodhana and Pūtanā committed horrendous, nefarious activities because they were driven by demoniac association and deep-seated hatred for the Lord and His devotees.
- Duryodhana was so foolish that he dared to insult Vidura. This was due to his bad association with Sakuni, his maternal uncle, as well as with his friend Karna, who always encouraged Duryodhana in his nefarious acts.
- These two sons (Duryodhana and Duhsasana) were very much dear to him (Dhrtarastra) for their notorious and nefarious activities, and Bhima is particularly pointed out because he killed these two pet sons.
- Bhimasena spoke the verse given above (in CC Madhya 15.269), remembering Duryodhana's former nefarious and atrocious activities against them.
- Krsna is so merciful that because the demon Putana came to offer her breast milk to Him, He fulfilled her desire and accepted her activity as motherly. But to stop her from further nefarious activities, He immediately killed her.
The Compassion of Lord Caitanya
In the current age, almost everyone possesses some demoniac qualities. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights that Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, out of supreme compassion, did not bring weapons to kill the offenders; instead, He distributed love of Godhead to completely eradicate their nefarious activities.
- Because the people of Kali-yuga are fallen, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, out of kindness, did not bring any weapon to kill them. Rather, by spreading Krsna Consciousness, love of Krsna, He wanted to kill their nefarious, demoniac activities. This is the purpose of the Krsna Consciousness Movement.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's mission is to kill the demon - not by life but by their heinous activities. Anyone who comes to be killed by Caitanya Mahaprabhu, his heinous, nefarious activities becomes killed and he becomes a Vaisnava, just like Jagai-Madhai.
- At the end of the Srimad-Bhagavatam it is said that even though all nefarious activities of the personality of Kali are present, there is a great advantage in the age of Kali. One can attain salvation simply by chanting the holy name of the Lord.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Śrīla Prabhupāda starkly outlines the grim reality of material existence, where nefarious activities constantly threaten the peace and spiritual progress of human society. Driven by false bodily identification, atheistic men deliberately deny the existence of their next life, attempting to bypass the strict laws of karma so they can perpetually engage in sense gratification and horrific atrocities. While a responsible, Vedic government is duty-bound to aggressively check these disturbing elements, the current age of Kali-yuga is so deeply infected that nearly the entire population exhibits demoniac tendencies. Recognizing this desperate condition, the Supreme Personality of Godhead appeared as Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu to distribute an unprecedented level of mercy. Rather than deploying physical weapons to annihilate the miscreants—as He did in previous incarnations—Lord Caitanya inaugurated the saṅkīrtana movement to kill the nefarious activities themselves. By enthusiastically spreading the chanting of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra, this transcendental movement cleanses the dirt from the heart, transforming the most fallen, heinous offenders into pure, peaceful Vaiṣṇavas, thus proving to be the ultimate remedy for the darkness of the modern age.
