Lord Viṣṇu Uses His Conchshell to Bless the Devotees
The majestic four-armed form of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is eternally decorated with divine ornaments and weapons. As carefully explained by Śrīla Prabhupāda, Lord Viṣṇu holds the conchshell and lotus flower specifically to shower benedictions and protection upon His surrendered devotees, while reserving His other weapons for the demons. Meditating on this beautifully armed form is the highest perfection of mystic realization.
The Four Divine Emblems
In the spiritual sky and within the hearts of all living entities, the Supreme Lord manifests in numerous plenary portions, such as Nārāyaṇa and Vāsudeva. Each of these majestic forms is distinguished by the unique arrangement of the four weapons in His four hands. It is beautifully described by Śrīla Prabhupāda that the conchshell perfectly complements the beauty of His lotus-like eyes, yellow garments, and dazzling jewelry.
- Generally in the four hands of Visnu there are a wheel, club, conchshell and lotus flower. These four symbols are seen in the four hands of Visnu in different arrangements.
- God expands Himself in innumerable forms, but all of them are nondifferent from one another. Visnu has four hands, each hand holds a particular item - either a conchshell, wheel, club or lotus flower. Of these 4 emblems, the cakra, or wheel, is the chief.
- Certainly Lord Visnu is very beautiful with His necklace of kaustubha jewels, His four hands holding conchshell, disc, club and lotus flower and His dazzlingly beautiful jewelry.
- One of the important residents of Dvaraka spoke, "My dear Lord Narayana, You are the Supreme Personality of Godhead. In Your plenary portion as Narayana, or Visnu, You have four hands with different symbols - the conchshell, disc, club and lotus flower."
Blessing and Protecting the Devotees
The diverse symbols held by the Supreme Personality of Godhead represent His absolute capacity to interact with all conditioned souls. The conchshell and lotus flower are designed specifically to bless, pacify, and give absolute protection to the surrendered devotees. In contrast, it is frequently explained by Śrīla Prabhupāda that the heavy club and the sharp disc are reserved strictly for punishing the nonbelievers and annihilating demonic forces.
- The four arms of Lord Visnu have different purposes. The hands holding a lotus flower and conchshell are meant for the devotees, whereas the other two hands, holding a disc and mace, or club, are meant for the demons.
- In two hands Lord Visnu always carries a club and a cakra to kill demons, and in His other two hands He holds a conchshell and a lotus to give protection to His devotees.
- The demons killed by Lord Visnu's cakra disc and club are elevated to the spiritual world, just like the devotees who are protected by the hands holding the lotus flower and conchshell.
- The Lord, who is known as Hrsikesa, bugled with His Pancajanya conchshell, in this way pleasing all the demigods, headed by Lord Brahma. Then He mounted the back of His carrier, Garuda.
The Object of True Yoga
Real mystic meditation goes far beyond physical postures or focusing the mind on an imaginary void. The authorized scriptures dictate that a genuine yogī must meditate step by step upon the four-armed Viṣṇu form situated within the core of the heart. To achieve ultimate perfection, Śrīla Prabhupāda advises that one must fully absorb their consciousness in this divine form holding the conchshell, disc, club, and lotus flower.
- A yogi who is practicing meditation on the Supersoul sees within himself the plenary portion of Krsna as Visnu-with four hands, holding conchshell, wheel, club and lotus flower.
- Some yogis meditate within their heart on the localized Visnu, who is four-handed and who holds four symbols: conch, disc, mace and lotus. The yogi who thinks of the four-handed Visnu becomes absorbed in devotional ecstasy and evinces the symptoms of that state.
- Some yogis think of the Lord within their hearts as measuring about six inches. The Lord has four hands, in which He holds a conchshell, club, disc and lotus flower. Those who worship this form of Visnu within the heart are called sagarbha-yogis.
- Lord Krsna is the original Personality of Godhead, and all the other Visnu forms - with four hands decorated with conch, lotus, club and wheel - are plenary expansions of Krsna. In Bhagavad-gita it is recommended that one meditate upon the form of the Lord.
Purifying the Heart from Offenses
By fixing the mind upon the transcendental features of the Supreme Lord, the conditioned soul is gradually cleansed of all material contaminations. Worshiping the authorized Deity forms, such as the sacred śālagrāma-śilā, allows the devotee to render direct service to the Lord. It is an amazing truth, often verified by Śrīla Prabhupāda, that serving Lord Viṣṇu and meditating upon His conchshell relieves the faithful practitioner from the reactions of various spiritual offenses.
- One who worships the salagrama-sila can also be relieved of offenses. In the Brahmanda Purana it is said that one who worships Lord Visnu, whose four hands bear a conchshell, disc, lotus flower and club, can be relieved from the above offenses.
- The system of yoga entails controlling the mind, and the Lord of the mind is Aniruddha. It is stated that Aniruddha is four-handed, with Sudarsana cakra, conchshell, club and lotus flower. There are twenty-four forms of Visnu, each differently named.
- Maha-Visnu possessed dazzling beauty, and His palms were like lotus flowers. He was further beautified by the different emblems of the visnu-murti - the conchshell, club, disc and lotus flower - which He held in His four hands.
- According to Viraraghava Acarya, the conchshell and lotus flower (of Visnu) are also accepted as weapons. Since the Lord is the supreme controller, whatever is in His hand can be considered a weapon.
Conclusion
Meditating upon the divine conchshell of Lord Viṣṇu brings profound peace and reassurance to the sincere devotee. As beautifully described by Śrīla Prabhupāda, every weapon and ornament held by the Supreme Personality of Godhead acts for the ultimate benefit of the conditioned souls. By taking shelter of His majestic four-armed form, the spiritual seeker is protected from all dangers and guaranteed steady progress on the path of bhakti-yoga.
