Lord Viṣṇu's Hand Offers Blessings and Annihilates Demons
The supreme power and absolute control of the entire cosmic manifestation rest eternally within the hands of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Through his extensive purports, it is explained by Śrīla Prabhupāda that Lord Viṣṇu manifests beautifully decorated hands holding divine emblems to both protect the pious and vanquish the miscreants. Meditating on these transcendental features is the true perfection of the mystic yoga system.
The Four Divine Emblems
Within the spiritual and material worlds, the Supreme Lord exhibits countless plenary expansions identified by the specific arrangement of His weapons. When describing these majestic viṣṇu-mūrtis, we learn from Śrīla Prabhupāda that the counting of the emblems always begins with the lower right hand and proceeds clockwise. These magnificent hands gracefully carry the conchshell, disc, club, and lotus flower to execute the divine will of the absolute controller.
- When describing the positions of objects in the hands of the Visnu murtis, one should begin with the lower right hand and then move to the upper right hand, to the upper left hand and finally to the lower left hand.
- My dear Sanatana, just hear from Me as I tell you how the different visnu-murtis hold Their weapons, beginning with the disc, and how They are named differently according to the placement of the weapons in Their hands.
- His (Lord Visnu) four hands were decorated with a conchshell, club, lotus and disc, He was dressed in yellow garments, and His eyes appeared like the petals of a blooming lotus.
- According to Viraraghava Acarya, the conchshell and lotus flower (of Visnu) are also accepted as weapons. Since the Lord is the supreme controller, whatever is in His hand can be considered a weapon.
Protection and Punishment
The weapons held by the Supreme Personality of Godhead perfectly demonstrate His absolute disposition toward all conditioned souls. The lotus flower and conchshell are specifically meant to pacify, bless, and offer supreme shelter to the surrendered devotees. In contrast, it is frequently warned by Śrīla Prabhupāda that the hands holding the heavy club and blazing cakra are reserved strictly for punishing the nondevotees and annihilating the demons.
- In His Visnu form, the Lord carries four weapons in His four hands - a lotus flower and a conchshell in two hands, and in the other two hands a club and a disc.
- In two hands Lord Visnu always carries a club and a cakra to kill demons, and in His other two hands He holds a conchshell and a lotus to give protection to His devotees.
- Those devotees (who have surrendered unto the lotus feet of the Lord) are so respectable and exalted that Lord Visnu personally protects them with the club in His hand.
- The demons killed by Lord Visnu's cakra disc and club are elevated to the spiritual world, just like the devotees who are protected by the hands holding the lotus flower and conchshell.
Supreme Controller of the Cosmos
Although the material universe operates under the strict laws of nature, the ultimate direction of all cosmic affairs is held securely by the Supreme Lord. While the various demigods assist in managing the three modes of material nature, their authority is entirely subordinate to the supreme will. As observed by Śrīla Prabhupāda, the infallible hand of Lord Viṣṇu carries the eternal wheel of time, which controls the existence of all living entities.
- All of these take charge of the three modes of material nature, but the ultimate direction is in the hand of Lord Visnu.
- As iron attracted by a magnetic stone moves automatically toward the magnet, my (Prahlada's) consciousness, having been changed by His (Lord Visnu's) will, is attracted by Lord Visnu, who carries a disc in His hand. Thus I have no independence.
- O Vidura, while searching in that way about his existence, Brahma reached his ultimate time, which is the eternal wheel in the hand of Visnu and which generates fear in the mind of the living entity like the fear of death.
- Lord Visnu was sitting on Garuda, a big aquiline bird, and was carrying in His hand a disc, Brahma was sitting on a swan and had in his hand kusa grass, and Lord Siva was sitting on a bull and carrying in his hand a small drum called a damaru.
The Object of True Yoga
Authentic meditation does not involve gazing at a void or imagining a formless light, but requires complete absorption in the personal features of the Absolute Truth. To achieve the highest perfection, it is taught by Śrīla Prabhupāda that the yogī must continuously meditate upon the four-handed viṣṇu-mūrti situated within the core of the heart. By focusing on the weapons held in His divine hands, the practitioner becomes completely purified.
- Actually yoga meditation means to see the form of the Lord, four-handed visnu-murti within the heart. That is real meditation. Now these rascals, they have manufactured so-called meditation. That is not meditation.
- He (the lotus-eyed Lord Visnu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead) resembled a bluish rain cloud with flashing lightning, and in two of His four hands He held a conchshell and disc.
- His (Lord Visnu's) lovely wrists were graced with bracelets, and He rested one of His hands on the shoulder of Garuda, His carrier, and twirled a lotus with another hand.
- May the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who bears the Srivatsa on His chest, protect me after midnight until the sky becomes pinkish. May Lord Janardana, who carries a sword in His hand, protect me at the end of night (during the last four ghatikas of night).
Conclusion
The magnificent hands of Lord Viṣṇu perfectly illustrate the supreme duality of His divine nature: unmatched compassion for the devotees and unavoidable justice for the demons. By continuously remembering these beautiful forms and the sacred emblems they carry, the sincere spiritual seeker gains ultimate protection. As thoroughly established by Śrīla Prabhupāda, taking shelter of the Lord's lotus hands is the guaranteed path to transcend material existence and return to the spiritual sky.
