Lord Vāmanadeva - God's Dwarf Incarnation Who Conquered the Universe
The Supreme Personality of Godhead is unlimited and all-pervading, yet by His inconceivable potency, He can assume any form He desires to execute His pastimes. Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently glorifies the wonderful activities of Lord Vāmanadeva, the Lord's incarnation as a dwarf brāhmaṇa, who playfully tricked a great king and conquered the entire universe with just three footsteps.
Appearance of the Dwarf
When the demons, led by King Bali Mahārāja, conquered the heavenly planets, the demigods prayed to the Supreme Lord for protection. In response, the Lord appeared as the fifteenth incarnation. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Lord first appeared to His parents, Aditi and Kaśyapa Muni, in His majestic form, and then, like a theatrical actor, instantly transformed Himself into a beautiful dwarf brahmacārī named Vāmana (or Upendra).
- In this manvantara, the Supreme Personality of Godhead appeared as the youngest of all the Adityas, known as Vamana, the dwarf. His father was Kasyapa and His mother Aditi.
- In the presence of His father and mother, He assumed the form of Vamana, a brahmana-dwarf, a brahmacari, just like a theatrical actor.
- In the fifteenth incarnation, the Lord assumed the form of a dwarf-brahmana named Vamana.
- When the great sages saw the Lord as the brahmacari-dwarf Vamana, they were certainly very pleased. Thus they placed before them Kasyapa Muni, the Prajapati, and performed all the ritualistic ceremonies, such as the birthday ceremony.
Divine Trick
To reclaim the universe for Lord Indra without violating the codes of religion, Lord Vāmanadeva devised a brilliant trick. He approached Bali Mahārāja, who was known for his vast wealth and charitable disposition toward brāhmaṇas. The Lord humbly begged for a seemingly insignificant piece of charity: a strip of land measuring only three of His own small footsteps.
- For the welfare of Indra, the King of heaven, Lord Visnu appeared in the form of a dwarf brahmacari as the son of Aditi and tricked Bali Maharaja by begging for only three paces of land but taking all the three worlds.
- All glories to Lord Kesava, who assumed the form of a dwarf. O Lord of the universe, who takes away everything inauspicious for the devotees! O wonderful Vamanadeva! You tricked the great demon Bali Maharaja by Your steps.
- Oh, is that all? - the king replied. "And what will you do with such a small piece of land?" "Though it may be small, it will suffice me," the boy (Krsna) smiled. Bali Maharaja agreed, and the boy dwarf took two steps and covered the entire universe.
Śukrācārya's Warning and Bali's Surrender
While Bali Mahārāja saw only an innocent dwarf boy, his spiritual master, Śukrācārya, had the vision to see the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Śukrācārya urgently warned his disciple not to promise anything, revealing that this dwarf was actually Lord Viṣṇu coming to cheat him out of his entire kingdom. However, rather than withdrawing his promise, Bali Mahārāja displayed the highest perfection of unalloyed love, resolving to give the Lord everything.
- Sukracarya said: O son of Virocana, this brahmacari in the form of a dwarf is directly the imperishable Supreme Personality of Godhead, Visnu. Accepting Kasyapa Muni as His father and Aditi as His mother, He has now appeared in order to fulfill the interests of the demigods.
- Dasavatara Stotra, CD 8 part two - Next incarnation is Vamanadeva. This Vamanadeva, a dwarf, He went to Bali Maharaja and asked him three feet land, and his guru, Sukracarya, induced him not to promise, because He is Visnu.
- Maharaj Bali once told his priest, Sukracarya, "As far as this brahmana dwarf (the incarnation Vamanadeva) is concerned, if He is Lord Visnu, a simple brahmana, or even my enemy, I have decided to give to Him in charity all the land He has asked for."
- Because of unalloyed love for the Lord, he (Bali) then immediately decided, "I shall give this little dwarf brahmana whatever He asks from me." This is a sign of love.
Inconceivable Expansion
Once the promise was made, the "helpless dwarf" revealed His true, unlimited nature. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how the Lord expanded His form to an inconceivable size. With His first step, He covered the lower and middle planetary systems. With His second step, He covered the entire upper planetary system, extending to the very top of the universe. Thus, the Lord took back the entire cosmos with just two strides.
- In His (Krsna's) Vamana incarnation He posed Himself as a dwarf brahmana, but when He took possession of His land, promised by Bali Maharaja, He expanded His footstep to the top of the universe, extending over thousands and millions of miles.
- May the Lord, who assumes the body of a great fish, protect me in the water from the fierce animals that are associates of the demigod Varuna. By expanding His illusory energy, the Lord assumed the form of the dwarf Vamana.
- Sukadeva narrated: "My dear King, you must have heard the name of King Bali. He was a great devotee who gave away in charity all that he had - namely, the whole world - to Lord Vamana, the incarnation of Visnu as a dwarf brahmana."
Philosophy of the Supreme Beggar
Why does the creator of all universes need to beg? Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Kṛṣṇa is never in need of money or land, because He is the original proprietor of everything (īśāvāsyam idam sarvam). When the Lord approaches a devotee as a beggar, it is actually His supreme mercy. By taking away all of Bali Mahārāja's material possessions, Lord Vāmanadeva effectively removed all his material distractions, capturing his mind and securing his absolute surrender.
- Krsna is not in want of money, for He is the original proprietor of everything (Isavasyam idam sarvam (ISO 1)). But still He asks us for charity. For example, Krsna, in the guise of Vamana, a dwarf brahmana, went to beg from Bali Maharaja.
- Here (in Srimad Bhagavatam 8.19.32) Sukracarya says that this dwarf brahmacari would take away everything. Thus he indicates that the Lord will take away all one's material possessions and also one's mind.
Conclusion
The pastimes of Lord Vāmanadeva teach us that God is not limited by our material conceptions of size or logic. He can appear as a small dwarf and yet simultaneously encompass the entire creation. Most importantly, this pastime reveals that when the Lord "tricks" us into giving up our material attachments, He is actually bestowing His greatest blessing, preparing us to receive His eternal, spiritual shelter.
