Lord Matsya Promises to Protect King Satyavrata During the Universal Devastation

This article presents a thematic survey of Lord Matsya's prophetic instructions and playful pastimes with King Satyavrata. It organizes the verses found in the Vaniquotes category Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam Verses Spoken by Lord Matsya.

The extraordinary appearance and pastimes of the Supreme Lord's fish incarnation (Matsya avatāra) are described in the Eighth Canto of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. Initially, the Lord appears as a tiny, helpless fish in the river, appealing to the merciful King Satyavrata for protection from larger predators. As the King continually moves the fish to larger bodies of water—a waterpot, a pool, a lake, and eventually the ocean—the miraculous fish continuously expands, outgrowing every reservoir and playfully complaining about His living conditions. Once the bewildered King realizes he is dealing with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Matsya reveals His true, grave purpose. He prophesies that in seven days, the three worlds will merge into the waters of cosmic devastation. He instructs the King to collect all types of herbs, seeds, and living entities, and to board a massive boat that will miraculously appear. Using the great serpent Vāsuki as a rope, the King must tie the boat to the Lord's horn. Lord Matsya promises to pull the boat safely through the devastating waters and reveals that through this journey, the Absolute Truth will be perfectly manifested within the King's heart.

The Playful Test of Mercy

While King Satyavrata was offering water in the river, a tiny fish fell into his hands. To test the King's legendary compassion, the Lord feigned great fear, begging not to be thrown back into the dangerous river.

Outgrowing Every Reservoir

As the King mercifully placed the fish in a waterpot, the fish miraculously grew to fill it within a single night. This extraordinary expansion continued as the King moved Him to a well, a lake, and finally the ocean, with the Lord constantly and playfully demanding a more suitable residence.

  • "With an appealing voice, the poor small fish said to King Satyavrata, who was very merciful: My dear King, protector of the poor, why are you throwing Me in the water of the river, where there are other aquatics who can kill Me? I am very much afraid of them."
  • "O My dear King, I do not like living in this waterpot with such great difficulty. Therefore, please find some better reservoir of water where I can live comfortably."
  • "The fish then said: My dear King, this reservoir of water is not fit for My happy residence. Please give Me a more extensive pool of water, for I have taken shelter of you."
  • "The fish then said: O King, I am a large aquatic, and this water is not at all suitable for Me. Now kindly find some way to save Me. It would be better to put Me in the water of a lake that will never reduce."
  • "While being thrown in the ocean, the fish said to King Satyavrata: O hero, in this water there are very powerful and dangerous sharks that will eat Me. Therefore you should not throw Me in this place."

The Prophecy of Devastation

Recognizing that no ordinary aquatic could expand to hundreds of miles in length, King Satyavrata offered his obeisances to the Supreme Lord. Pleased with his surrender, Lord Matsya dropped His playful demeanor and revealed the impending cosmic destruction.

The Great Boat

The Lord warned the King that a massive flood was coming to engulf the three planetary systems. To preserve the creation, He instructed Satyavrata to gather herbs, seeds, and living entities, and wait for a divinely sent boat to navigate the dark ocean of inundation.

  • "The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: O King, who can subdue your enemies, on the seventh day from today the three worlds—Bhūḥ, Bhuvaḥ and Svaḥ—will all merge into the water of inundation."
  • "When all the three worlds merge into the water, a large boat sent by Me will appear before you."
  • "Thereafter, O King, you shall collect all types of herbs and seeds and load them on that great boat. Then, accompanied by the seven ṛṣis and surrounded by all kinds of living entities, you shall get aboard that boat, and without moroseness you shall easily travel with your companions on the ocean of inundation, the only illumination being the effulgence of the great ṛṣis."

Divine Protection and Transcendental Knowledge

Surviving a universal devastation is impossible without the direct shelter of the Supreme Lord. Lord Matsya gave the King specific, practical instructions on how to secure the boat during the terrifying, wind-tossed deluge.

The Absolute Truth Revealed

The Lord promised to remain by the King's side, instructing him to use the great serpent Vāsuki to tether the boat directly to His divine horn. He assured Satyavrata that as He pulled them through the waters, all knowledge of the Absolute Truth would be perfectly revealed within his heart.

  • "Then, as the boat is tossed about by the powerful winds, attach the vessel to My horn by means of the great serpent Vāsuki, for I shall be present by your side."
  • "Pulling the boat, with you and all the ṛṣis in it, O King, I shall travel in the water of devastation until the night of Lord Brahmā's slumber is over."
  • "You will be thoroughly advised and favored by Me, and because of your inquiries, everything about My glories, which are known as paraṁ brahma, will be manifest within your heart. Thus you will know everything about Me."
