Lord Caitanya and the Pure Devotion of Vāsudeva Datta
The character of Vāsudeva Datta defines the absolute summit of selflessness in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that as the ideal associate of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, Vāsudeva Datta's heart was so overwhelmed with compassion that he begged to suffer in hell eternally, provided that all other living entities could be delivered back to Godhead.
The Ideal Compassionate Devotee
A genuine Vaiṣṇava feels the pain of others as his own. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that Vāsudeva Datta is celebrated as the ideal devotee of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu precisely because he constantly thought of how to assimilate the sufferings of the conditioned souls and secure their ultimate good fortune.
- Vasudeva Datta is the ideal devotee of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
- A devotee of the Lord is always thinking of how to assimilate the sufferings of others. A similar devotee was Vasudeva Datta, who was Lord Caitanya's associate.
- Caitanya said, You (Vasudeva Datta) desire the liberation of all kinds of living entities without discrimination. You are very anxious for their good fortune, and I say that simply by your prayer all living entities within the universe can be liberated.
Taking the Sins of the World
The depth of a devotee's mercy is measured by his willingness to sacrifice himself for others. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes the historic moment when Vāsudeva Datta petitioned the Lord, literally begging Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu to transfer all the sins of the world onto his own head so he could suffer in their place.
- Srila Vasudeva Datta Thakura wanted to suffer for the sinful activities of all the people of the world so that Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu might deliver them.
- He (Vasudeva Datta) told the Lord (Caitanya): If You think that they (people on this earth) are so sinful that they cannot be delivered, please transfer all their sins unto me. I shall suffer for them. This is a Vaisnava's mercy.
- He (Vasudeva Datta) told the Lord (Caitanya): Now that You have come, kindly deliver all people on this earth and take them to Vaikuntha, the spiritual world.
The Lord's Supreme Affection
The Supreme Lord is completely conquered by the pure love of His devotees. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights that upon hearing Vāsudeva Datta's selfless prayer, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu wept, trembled in ecstasy, and firmly declared that He belonged entirely to Vāsudeva Datta.
- When Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu heard Vasudeva Datta's statement, His heart became very soft. Tears flowed from His eyes, and He began to tremble. In a faltering voice He spoke as follows.
- All My dear devotees - He (Lord Caitanya) said - I tell you the truth. My body is especially meant for Vasudeva Datta.
- In the CB it is described that Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu was so pleased with Vasudeva Datta and so affectionate toward him that He used to say - I am only Vasudeva Datta’s man. My body is only meant to please Vasudeva Datta, and he can sell Me anywhere.
- Thrice He (Lord Caitanya) vowed that this was a fact (that Caitanya's body is only meant to please Vasudeva Datta, and he can sell Him anywhere) and that no one should disbelieve these statements.
The Power to Deliver the Universe
Because God is unlimitedly powerful, the compassionate desires of His devotees are fulfilled without difficulty. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Lord Caitanya assured Vāsudeva Datta that He could easily deliver the entire universe simply on the strength of Vāsudeva's prayer, without requiring him to suffer any sinful reactions.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu here (in CC Madhya 15.169) informed Vasudeva Datta that since Krsna is all-powerful, He can immediately deliver all conditioned souls from material existence.
- Caitanya said, You (Vasudeva Datta) do not even have to take up the burden of their sinful activities. Thus there is no need for you to suffer for their sinful lives. Whoever receives your compassion becomes a Vaisnava immediately.
- Caitanya Mahaprabhu replied, - Vasudeva, do you think that if I take away all the conditioned souls of the universe, the whole universe if I take, do you think that it is finished, the business is finished?
Conclusion
The supreme compassion exhibited by Vāsudeva Datta reveals the true nature of an advanced Vaiṣṇava. While ordinary men struggle merely for their own survival or liberation, the pure devotee is willing to embrace the fires of hell if it means the suffering conditioned souls can return to the spiritual world. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s ecstatic response to Vāsudeva Datta confirms that there is nothing more pleasing to the Supreme Lord than a devotee who selflessly desires the deliverance of others. Because of Vāsudeva Datta's pure, unalloyed mercy, the Lord declared Himself completely sold to His devotee, proving that Kṛṣṇa's love and power are fully controlled by the compassion of His pure servants.
