Lord Caitanya's Agreeing - The Divine Consents and Refusals
Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, appeared to teach the world the path of pure devotion through His personal example. In the following instructions, Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Lord's actions of agreeing or disagreeing were always rooted in the highest spiritual principles and the welfare of all living entities. Every instance of Lord Caitanya's agreeing or refusing to perform a certain action carries immense philosophical weight and serves as a guiding light for humanity. He confirmed the absolute conclusion of the Vedic literature by unanimously agreeing with previous ācāryas regarding the supreme position of Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa. Furthermore, His interactions with His intimate associates demonstrate how the Supreme Lord becomes wonderfully subordinate to the pure love and devotion of His followers. Conversely, His strict refusal to compromise the principles of sannyāsa establishes the uncompromising standard required for those walking the path of absolute truth. By carefully observing the transcendental logic behind what the Lord accepted and what He rejected, sincere seekers can understand the practical application of pure devotional service.
Confirmation of the Supreme Truth
Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that there is no disagreement among authorized spiritual authorities regarding the identity of the Supreme Lord. Lord Caitanya, along with other great ācāryas, confirmed that the ultimate purpose of life is to return to the kingdom of God.
- According to the Vedic literature and according to the great acaryas, the authorized persons versed in the knowledge of God in all ages, like acaryas Sankara, Ramanuja, Madhva, Visnu Svami, Caitanya, all unanimously agree that Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- All of them (Jesus, Caitanya . . .) agreed that we have to go to a separate world, where peace and prosperity have their real being. We have to search out our eternal peace and prosperity in the kingdom of God, which is a place other than this mortal world.
- Lord Caitanya and all their followers by disciplic succession, all unanimously agree that Krsna is the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
The Standard of Submissive Hearing
As the perfect student, Lord Caitanya demonstrated how one should approach the study of the Upaniṣads and Vedānta. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that even though the Lord is the source of all knowledge, He agreed to listen submissively to teach us the proper disciple's attitude.
- Although Caitanya Mahaprabhu agreed to hear Vedanta from Sarvabhauma Bhattacarya, He simply went on hearing it for many days but did not ask any questions.
- When the Lord (Caitanya) finally agreed (to learn Vedanta-sutra), Bhattacarya began to teach Him in the temple of Jagannatha.
- If someone wrote a book or composed verses and songs and wanted to recite them before Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, Svarupa Damodara would first examine them and then correctly present them. Only then would Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu agree to listen.
Reciprocation with Pure Devotees
The Supreme Lord is conquered by the love of His servants, a truth often highlighted by Śrīla Prabhupāda. Lord Caitanya's agreements to stay in certain places or reveal His confidential forms were direct responses to the intense desire and service of His devotees.
- Being requested by all the devotees, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu agreed to remain at Jagannatha Puri for four months. Hearing this, King Prataparudra became very happy.
- One day Advaita Acarya Prabhu requested Caitanya Mahaprabhu to display the universal form He had very kindly shown Arjuna. Lord Caitanya agreed to this proposal, and Advaita Prabhu was fortunate enough to see the universal form of the Lord.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, "My body belongs to all of you. Therefore I agree to whatever you say."
Strictness in Renunciation
Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Lord Caitanya’s refusal to agree to certain proposals was as significant as His consent. To set an example for all sannyāsīs, He would not agree to meet with worldly kings, maintaining a strict distance from those interested in material wealth and prestige.
- As Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu was playing the part of a world teacher, He did not agree to see the King, because a king is a mundane person interested in money and women.
- Yet despite my great endeavor, the Lord would not agree to see a king. Indeed, He said that if He were asked again, He would quit Jagannatha Puri and go elsewhere.
- Such a person must be a new man, and he must have a peaceful mind. If I can obtain such a man, I shall agree to take him with Me.
Conclusion
The divine agreements of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu provide a profound lesson in spiritual leadership and devotional surrender. By aligning His actions with the authorized Vedic conclusions and the loving desires of His associates, He showed that the Supreme Lord is neither impersonal nor indifferent but is deeply involved in the lives of His devotees, and Śrīla Prabhupāda presents this involvement as the practical proof of the Lord’s intimate reciprocation with pure devotion. Whether agreeing to submissively hear philosophy or strictly refusing the company of the materialistic, the Lord's every gesture was designed to lead the conditioned souls back to their eternal relationship with Kṛṣṇa.
