Kṛṣṇa Knows What You Are Wanting
Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that Śrī Kṛṣṇa is the most sincere friend of every living entity. Residing within the heart as the Supersoul, He is fully aware of our every thought and longing. While Kṛṣṇa is capable of granting any material or spiritual benediction, He encourages us to abandon temporary material hankerings. By understanding that Kṛṣṇa is the ultimate provider, a sincere Vaiṣṇava learns to stop asking for sense gratification and instead begs for the opportunity to remain eternally engaged in the Lord's transcendental loving service.
The Provider in the Heart
Kṛṣṇa is not a distant God; He is intimately present within the core of the heart of every living being. Śrīla Prabhupāda uses the Vedic analogy of two birds sitting in one tree—the soul and the Supersoul. While the soul attempts to enjoy the fruits of material nature, the Supersoul witnesses and provides the facilities for those desires to be met, knowing exactly what the individual is wanting at every moment.
- He (Krsna) knows what you are wanting because He is constantly seeing you. He is sitting within your heart, the same tree, two birds.
- The two birds are sitting in one tree. One bird is eating the fruit of the tree, and the other bird is simply witnessing. That witness bird is God, Krsna, and the eating bird is atma. So He is giving chance, as we want.
- Krsna is so kind, because you desire, He'll give you. He'll give you. Krsna is so kind that "Oh, you wanted this? All right, you take!."
- Krsna is within the core of heart of everyone. He knows what I want. He's giving us facilities.
Supplying Desires for All
The Supreme Lord is neutral and equal to all living entities, yet He rewards each person according to their degree of surrender. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that even a karmi or a demon can receive their desired enjoyment from Kṛṣṇa. However, Kṛṣṇa warns that such material pursuits, or the "pravṛtti-mārga," can never bring actual happiness, as they contradict the soul's original mission of surrender.
- He is equal to the devotee and nondevotee. Whatever the nondevotees want, Krsna supplies. And whatever the devotees want, Krsna supplies.
- The Lord says, ye yatha mam prapadyante tams tathaiva bhajamy aham: (BG 4.11) "As the living entities surrender unto Me, I reward them accordingly." Even the karmi who wants everything for his enjoyment can get it from Krsna.
- If you want from Krsna sense enjoyment, He will give you all facilities. But Krsna does not want. Krsna said, sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja (BG 18.66). That is His mission, that - You will never be happy in this process of pravrtti-marga.
- You get all advantage by Krsna. If you want to become a demon, Krsna will supply you: "All right, you become a demon. You take whatever you want from Me." He will give you.
The Foolishness of Asking for Material Opulence
It is considered the height of foolishness to approach the Supreme Lord, who can grant eternal bliss, and ask instead for temporary material gain. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that while Kṛṣṇa readily gives material sense gratification or even liberation (mukti) to those who ask, He keeps the most precious gift—pure devotional service—hidden from them. An intelligent person like Mucukunda realizes that asking for anything material after pleasing the Lord is a mistake that only leads to further entanglement.
- It is said in Caitanya-caritamrta (Madhya 22.38-39): Krsna says, 'If one engages in My transcendental loving service but at the same time wants the opulence of material enjoyment, he is very, very foolish.
- If we want material happiness from Krsna, it is certainly not difficult for Him to grant it. He can also give us mukti, liberation, but it is foolishness to ask anything from Krsna except bhakti.
- If a devotee wants liberation or material sense gratification from the Lord, Krsna immediately delivers it, but pure devotional service He keeps hidden.
- Mucukunda continued, "You (Krsna) are the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and You can offer me anything I want, including liberation. But who is such a fool that after pleasing You he would ask from You something which might cause entanglement in this material world."
The Pure Devotee's Standard
The pure devotee seeks no return for their service. Following the example of Dhruva Mahārāja, who approached Kṛṣṇa for a kingdom but ended by wanting only His service, a wise Vaiṣṇava aspires only to give to the Lord. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that a sincere devotee never takes any service from Kṛṣṇa in exchange for their devotion; they simply desire the favor of the guru and Kṛṣṇa to remain eternally engaged in the Lord's pleasure.
- A wise man who becomes attached to Krsna does not want any return from Him, either in the form of relieving distress or in gaining money.
- When he (Dhruva Maharaja) actually saw Krsna, he said, - I do not want anything from You. I don't want any benediction other than Your service.
- You have taken service from Radharani? Ohhh. You have murdered me. We don't want to take any service from Krsna, and He has taken the opportunity, sent us... We want to simply give our service, not any exchange.
- Krsna never disappoints a sincere devotee, regardless of what he wants, but He never allows anything which will be detrimental to the individual's devotional service.
Conclusion
In summary, Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that while Kṛṣṇa is the supreme provider who knows exactly what we are wanting, the perfection of life is to align our desires with His mission. Approaching Kṛṣṇa for material things is the beginning of spiritual life, but it remains a foolish endeavor compared to the treasure of pure bhakti. By observing the lives of great devotees like Dhruva Mahārāja and Mucukunda, we learn that the only request worth making to Kṛṣṇa is the request for more service. When we abandon the desire for personal sense enjoyment and focus entirely on pleasing the Lord, Kṛṣṇa takes full charge of our lives, fulfilling our real necessities while leading us safely back to our eternal home in the spiritual world.
