Jagannātha Miśra and Other Exalted Devotees in Pastimes as Caitanya's Fathers
The pastimes of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu are richly ornamented by His deep, affectionate relationships with His father, Śrī Jagannātha Miśra, and several other exalted senior Vaiṣṇavas. As Śrīla Prabhupāda explains throughout his teachings, Jagannātha Miśra is eternally nondifferent from Nanda Mahārāja, the father of Kṛṣṇa in Vṛndāvana, making their bond completely transcendental. To set the perfect example for human society, Lord Caitanya dutifully performed all the necessary Vedic rituals, such as offering śrāddha in Gayā, upon His father's departure. Beyond His biological ties, the Lord exhibited the highest standard of Vaiṣṇava etiquette by affectionately addressing and treating several elderly pure devotees as His fathers. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that He offered this profound respect to exalted personalities like Advaita Ācārya, Puṇḍarīka Vidyānidhi, and Purandara Ācārya, honoring their advanced age and their eternal spiritual identities. By meditating on these pastimes, devotees can learn how the Supreme Lord perfectly balances His absolute divinity with the loving, humble etiquette of a pure devotee.
Śrī Jagannātha Miśra, His Eternal Father
Śrī Jagannātha Miśra, a highly elevated brāhmaṇa in Navadvīpa, was chosen to act as the father of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that Jagannātha Miśra is the exact same personality as Nanda Mahārāja, the king of Vraja. Their relationship in Navadvīpa was filled with parental affection and transcendental joy, as the Lord delighted His parents with His extraordinary childhood pastimes.
- The King of Vrajabhumi is Nanda Maharaja and the same person in Navadvipa is Jagannatha Misra the father of Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
- Before the appearance of Lord Sri Krsna Caitanya Mahaprabhu, there appeared His devotees like Sri Madhavendra Puri; His spiritual master, Sri Isvara Puri; His mother, Srimati Saci-devi; His father, Sri Jagannatha Misra; and Sri Advaita Acarya.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, "In My previous asrama, Sankararanya was My brother and Jagannatha Misra was My father."
- His (Lord Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's) father and mother, Jagannatha Misra and Sacidevi, seeing the honor of their transcendental son, also became very pleased within their hearts.
Executing Filial Duties and Rituals
Although He is the Supreme Lord and requires no purification or ritualistic obligations, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu strictly observed the Vedic codes to teach human society. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights how the Lord engaged His father to bring viṣṇu-prasādam during His childhood, and how He later traveled all the way to Gayā to offer piṇḍa (oblations) for the spiritual benefit of His departed father.
- Once on Ekadasi in the house of Jagadisa and Hiranya Pandita there were arrangements for preparing special prasadam for Lord Visnu, and Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu asked His father to go there to ask for the visnu-prasadam because He was feeling sick.
- They (Jagadisa and Hiranya) immediately sent the food to Lord Caitanya through His father, Jagannatha Misra. Nimai was feeling sick, but immediately after eating the visnu-prasadam He was cured, and He also distributed the prasadam among His playmates.
- Friends and relatives came there to pacify Lord Caitanya and His mother. Then Lord Caitanya, even though He was the Supreme Personality of Godhead, executed the rituals for His dead father according to the Vedic system.
- Hundreds and thousands of men gather in Gaya daily to offer oblations, or sraddha. Following this principle (offering oblations for relatives), Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu also went there to offer pinda to His dead father. Fortunately He met Isvara Puri there.
Honoring Advaita Ācārya and Puṇḍarīka Vidyānidhi
In His dealings with the senior members of the saṅkīrtana movement, the Lord was the embodiment of humility. As noted by Śrīla Prabhupāda, because Advaita Ācārya was older than Jagannātha Miśra, Lord Caitanya always treated Him with the reverence due to a father. Similarly, He bestowed the title of "father" upon Puṇḍarīka Vidyānidhi, recognizing him as the incarnation of King Vṛṣabhānu, the father of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī.
- Caitanya always offered respects to Advaita Prabhu as He would to His father because Advaita was even older than His father; yet Advaita Prabhu always considered Himself a servant of Lord Caitanya.
- The Lord immediately took him (Acyutananda) on His lap, although he was not very clean, having dust all over his body. Lord Caitanya said, “My dear Acyuta, Advaita Acarya is My father, and thus we are brothers.”
- In the Gaura-ganoddesa-dipika (54), Srila Pundarika Vidyanidhi is described as the father of Srimati Radharani in krsna-lila. Caitanya Mahaprabhu therefore treated him as His father.
- Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu called Pundarika Vidyanidhi "father," and He gave him the title Premanidhi.
Compassion and Respect for Elderly Devotees
Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu expanded His filial affection to several other elderly associates in His pastimes. He embraced Purandara Ācārya with immense love, addressing him directly as His father. Even when dealing with scholarly impersonalists like Sārvabhauma Bhaṭṭācārya, the Lord’s interactions were colored by the mutual understanding that the Bhaṭṭācārya was the same age as Jagannātha Miśra, which evoked deep, compassionate exchanges.
- Sri Acarya Purandara, the ninth branch, was a constant associate of Lord Caitanya's. The Lord accepted him as His father.
- Purandara Acarya is to be considered most fortunate because the Lord (Caitanya) used to greet him by addressing him as His father and embracing him in great love.
- Since Bhattacarya was an elderly man, the age of Lord Caitanya's father, He took compassion on the young sannyasi and requested Him to learn Vedanta-sutra from him.
- In the Caitanya-bhagavata, Madhya-khanda, Chapter One, it is said that a gentleman known as Ratnagarbha Acarya was a friend of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu’s father.
Conclusion
The pastimes involving Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and His fathers brilliantly showcase the synthesis of divine opulence and Vaiṣṇava sweetness. Through His loving submission to Jagannātha Miśra and His strict observance of Vedic rituals in Gayā, the Lord established the proper standard of duty for all humanity. Simultaneously, by elevating exalted pure devotees like Advaita Ācārya, Puṇḍarīka Vidyānidhi, and Purandara Ācārya to the respected position of His father, He proved that spiritual relationships supersede all material designations. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that these pastimes teach us the supreme value of humility, respect for senior Vaiṣṇavas, and the incomparable sweetness of intimate devotional service to the Lord.
