I Must – Prabhupāda’s Unwavering Duty and Determination
When Śrīla Prabhupāda uses the phrase "I must" or "we must," we are given direct insight into the absolute conviction and driving force behind the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement. For a pure devotee, there is no material compulsion or forced labor; the "must" comes from a place of deep, transcendental obligation to the Supreme Lord and the disciplic succession. It was this spiritual imperative that compelled a seventy-year-old saint to cross the ocean, declaring, "I must go to America" to fulfill the order of his guru. In these quotes, Śrīla Prabhupāda outlines the non-negotiable principles of spiritual life: we must not compromise the śāstra, we must practically engage everything in the Lord's service, and we must direct our inherent loving propensity toward the Supreme Person. By studying his unyielding determination, we learn what it truly means to be bound by the ropes of divine love and duty.
Prabhupāda on His Guru's Order and Duty
The foundational strength of ISKCON rests on Śrīla Prabhupāda's absolute dedication to his spiritual master, Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura. He viewed the order to preach in the West not as an option, but as a mandatory duty he must execute.
- When I was seventy years old I decided, Now I must do and execute the order of my Guru Maharaja. And thus this movement was started in 1965 from New York.
- At the age of seventy years, nobody goes out. At least from Vrndavana nobody goes at the age of seventy years. But Krsna asked me. I thought that I must go, Guru Maharaja wanted it, Caitanya Mahaprabhu... Let me try.
- I planned that "I must go to America." Yes. That was the reason. Otherwise, generally they go to London. I did not go to London. I was simply dreaming, "How to go to New York?"
- I am ordered by superior, my spiritual master, that "Whatever you have learned, you should go to the Western countries, and you must distribute this knowledge." So in spite of all my difficulties, all my inconveniences, I am here because I am in duty.
Uncompromising Preaching
Śrīla Prabhupāda firmly believed that spiritual truth cannot be altered to suit the times or please the public. He insisted that his disciples must present the message of Kṛṣṇa exactly as it is given in the paramparā (disciplic succession).
- We must not compromise.
- If you don't like, that is your option. But we cannot make any compromise. We must present the sastra as it is.
- I must present things exactly in the same way as it was presented by Krsna, as it was presented by Arjuna, as it was presented by our acaryas, Caitanya, and at last my spiritual master. So, similarly, if you take up the Krsna consciousness movement in the same spirit.
- When one preaches he must tell the truth. Just like Lord Jesus Christ. The people did not like his preaching, but he did not stop his preaching. That is another point. You see? So in the preaching propaganda there is possibility of creating animosity.
Responsibility to His Disciples
Once Śrīla Prabhupāda accepted a disciple, he took complete responsibility for their spiritual life. He frequently expressed that he must instruct, correct, and pray for them to ensure their journey back to Godhead.
- Anyone who comes to me for my help or wants advance in Krishna Consciousness, and whom I initiate and accept as my disciple, I must pray for him and his welfare always.
- You are my initiated disciple, and I must instruct you to be sure to always follow the regulative principles like chanting 16 rounds on the beads daily, reading my books, eating only prasadam, and in every way trying to serve Krsna.
- We have no alternative than to teach our disciples to free themselves from materialistic life. We must instruct them in the opposite of material life to save them from the repetition of birth and death.
- You have become my disciple so I must request you to chant 16 rounds and follow the regulative practices of devotional service, and you may know it for sure that very quickly you will achieve the supreme perfectional stage of your life.
Practical Engagement and Love
Defeating impersonalism and artificial renunciation, Śrīla Prabhupāda taught that our mandatory urge to love must be directed at the Supreme Person, and that we must actively use modern facilities to broadcast this message.
- We must love. There is no escape. I must love somebody, because the propensity's there. So the original love is for Krsna. But because we have forgotten Krsna, therefore our love is distributed in so many ways.
- Unless one is person, how can I serve him? I cannot serve the air or the sky. I must serve a person. Love does not exist in the sky or in the air. It must be a person. Man or woman, it doesn't matter. Otherwise where there is love? Whom to love?
- If we get opportunity, preaching facilities for going on car, on airplane, using typewriter, dictaphone, microphone, we must use it. Because this is Krsna's property, it must be used for Krsna. This is our philosophy.
- We are preaching now. I came from India. If I would say: "I am sannyasi. I will not ride in a car or aeroplane; I must walk," then what kind of preaching would have been? You see? So therefore it depends on the acarya how to adjust things.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda's use of "I must" and "we must" perfectly illustrates the resolute determination required to advance in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Far from being an imposition or a mundane burden, this sense of necessity is the hallmark of a soul completely surrendered to the divine will. Whether he was emphasizing the strict, uncompromising presentation of the śāstra, instructing his disciples with protective care, or logically asserting that love and engagement must be directed toward the Supreme Person, Śrīla Prabhupāda demonstrated that real freedom is found in mandatory service to Kṛṣṇa. His unwavering conviction continues to be the lifeblood of the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement, inspiring his followers to adopt that same urgency and dedication in their own spiritual lives.
