How the Learned Brāhmaṇas Prophesied the Greatness and Renunciation of Mahārāja Parīkṣit

This article presents a thematic survey of the Learned Brāhmaṇas' astonishing astrological predictions at the birth of Mahārāja Parīkṣit. It organizes the verses found in the Vaniquotes category Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam Verses Spoken by the Learned Brāhmaṇas.

The joyous and auspicious birth ceremony of Mahārāja Parīkṣit, the grandson of Arjuna and the sole heir to the Kuru dynasty, is described in the First Canto of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. Because the child was miraculously saved in the womb from the lethal brahmāstra weapon by Lord Kṛṣṇa, Mahārāja Yudhiṣṭhira invites expert learned brāhmaṇas and astrologers to calculate the child's future. The brāhmaṇas deliver a breathtaking prophecy, comparing the newborn prince to the greatest kings, demigods, and incarnations in universal history. They predict he will possess the charity of King Śibi, the truthfulness of Lord Rāma, the prowess of Arjuna, and the devotion of Prahlāda. As the ideal monarch, he will protect the innocent and chastise the upstarts to maintain world peace. Finally, they prophesy the dramatic conclusion of his life: how he will be cursed to die by a snake-bird, how he will completely renounce his immense kingdom, and how he will achieve ultimate liberation after hearing the absolute truth from the great sage Śukadeva Gosvāmī.

The Child Protected by Viṣṇu

Following the destructive Kurukṣetra war, the entire Kuru dynasty was nearly annihilated by the brahmāstra weapon released by Aśvatthāmā. However, Lord Viṣṇu personally intervened to protect the final heir within the womb of Uttarā.

A First-Class Devotee

The expert astrologers confirm this miraculous event, declaring that the child is completely spotless. Because he was directly saved by the Supreme Lord, they predict he will be renowned throughout the world as a pure, first-class devotee endowed with all good qualities.

  • "The brāhmaṇas said: This spotless son has been restored by the all-powerful and all-pervasive Lord Viṣṇu, the Personality of Godhead, in order to oblige you. He was saved when he was doomed to be destroyed by an irresistible supernatural weapon."
  • "For this reason this child will be well known in the world as one who is protected by the Personality of Godhead. O most fortunate one, there is no doubt that this child will become a first-class devotee and will be qualified with all good qualities."

The Qualities of Legendary Kings

To help King Yudhiṣṭhira understand the magnitude of the child's future, the brāhmaṇas provide a comprehensive list of comparisons, equating the newborn prince to the most celebrated figures in history.

Prowess and Charity

They predict he will protect his citizens exactly like Ikṣvāku and keep his promises like Lord Rāma. In charity, he will mirror King Śibi, and in martial prowess, he will be as irresistible as fire and as unsurpassable as the ocean, perfectly matching his grandfather Arjuna.

  • "The learned brāhmaṇas said: O son of Pṛthā, this child shall be exactly like King Ikṣvāku, son of Manu, in maintaining all those who are born. And as for following the brahminical principles, especially in being true to his promise, he shall be exactly like Rāma, the Personality of Godhead, the son of Mahārāja Daśaratha."
  • "This child will be a munificent donor of charity and protector of the surrendered, like the famous King Śibi of the Uśīnara country. And he will expand the name and fame of his family like Bharata, the son of Mahārāja Duṣyanta."
  • "Amongst great bowmen, this child will be as good as Arjuna. He will be as irresistible as fire and as unsurpassable as the ocean."
  • "This child will be as strong as a lion, and as worthy a shelter as the Himalaya Mountains. He will be forbearing like the earth, and as tolerant as his parents."

Equanimity and Staunch Devotion

Beyond his martial and administrative capabilities, the child will be endowed with profound spiritual and moral qualities, mirroring the greatest demigods and pure devotees of the Supreme Lord.

The Shelter of the World

The astrologers predict he will possess the mental equanimity of Brahmā and Yudhiṣṭhira, the munificence of Lord Śiva, and the patience of Bali Mahārāja. As a staunch devotee of Lord Kṛṣṇa, he will act as the ultimate shelter for his citizens and fiercely maintain world peace by performing sacrifices and chastising all upstarts.

  • "This child will be like his grandfather Yudhiṣṭhira or Brahmā in equanimity of mind. He will be munificent like the lord of the Kailāsa Hill, Śiva. And he will be the resort of everyone, like the Supreme Personality of Godhead Nārāyaṇa, who is even the shelter of the goddess of fortune."
  • "This child will be almost as good as Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa by following in His footsteps. In magnanimity he will become as great as King Rantideva. And in religion he will be like Mahārāja Yayāti."
  • "This child will be like Bali Mahārāja in patience, a staunch devotee of Lord Kṛṣṇa like Prahlāda Mahārāja, a performer of many Aśvamedha (horse) sacrifices and a follower of the old and experienced men."
  • "This child will be the father of kings who will be like sages. For world peace and for the sake of religion, he will be the chastiser of the upstarts and the quarrelsome."

The Final Liberation

The most profound part of the prophecy concerns the end of Mahārāja Parīkṣit's life. The brāhmaṇas foresee that his glorious reign will be abruptly concluded by a sudden, deadly curse.

Renunciation and Fearlessness

Upon learning that he will die from the bite of a snake-bird, the great King will not lament or attempt to save himself. Instead, he will use the curse as an impetus to completely renounce all material attachments, surrender to the Personality of Godhead, and achieve ultimate fearlessness by hearing from the great philosopher Śukadeva Gosvāmī.

  • "After hearing about his death, which will be caused by the bite of a snake-bird sent by a son of a brāhmaṇa, he will get himself freed from all material attachment and surrender unto the Personality of Godhead, taking shelter of Him."
  • "After inquiring about proper self-knowledge from the son of Vyāsadeva, who will be a great philosopher, he will renounce all material attachment and achieve a life of fearlessness."
