How Prahlāda Conquered Illusion by Seeing the Supreme Lord Everywhere
The transcendental ability to perceive the presence of God in all circumstances is the hallmark of a pure devotee. Through the life of Prahlāda Mahārāja, as extensively documented by Śrīla Prabhupāda, we understand that spiritual vision is not a product of mundane effort but of unalloyed devotion. By seeing the Supreme Lord everywhere, even in the midst of extreme danger, Prahlāda remained completely free from the influence of material illusion.
Seeing the Lord in the Pillar
The demoniac mentality is characterized by an inability to see God, even when He is present everywhere. Hiraṇyakaśipu challenged his son to show him the Lord within a stone pillar, mocking the boy's faith. As Śrīla Prabhupāda explains, Prahlāda Mahārāja was qualified to see the Supreme Personality of Godhead within that column because of his pure consciousness. While the father saw only an obstacle to his power, the son saw his beloved protector appearing to fulfill his desire and protect his devotion.
- Prahlada Maharaja saw Krsna in a pillar. There are many other examples. Krsna is there; all that is required is our qualification to see Him.
- Those who are greedy see everything as a source of money-making and those who are lusty see everything as being conducive to sex, the most perfect devotee, Prahlada Maharaja, saw Narayana even within a stone column.
- When Hiranyakasipu was threatening to kill Prahlada, he certainly saw the column standing before him and his father, and he saw that the Lord was present in the pillar to encourage him not to fear his demoniac father's words. God was present to protect him.
- When Nrsimhadeva appeared, Prahlada Maharaja saw the Lord as the supreme solace, whereas his father, a demon, saw Him as the ultimate death.
The Transcendental Eyes of a Devotee
A pure devotee does not view the world with material eyes, which are limited by the bodily concept of life. Prahlāda Mahārāja possessed inherent transcendental eyes that allowed him to see the character of a person and the spiritual reality behind material forms. We learn from the teachings of Śrīla Prabhupāda that this spiritual vision is awarded by the mercy of a bona fide spiritual master. Because of this divine gift, Prahlāda could see the Lord face to face, indicating that his very body had been transformed from material to transcendence.
- The saintly brahmana said: O best of the asuras, Prahlada Maharaja, who are recognized by advanced and civilized men, you are aware of the different stages of life because of your inherent transcendental eyes, with which you can see a man's character.
- Because my (Prahlada) spiritual master gave me blessing, therefore I see You. So my first business is to serve him. - This is Vaisnava conclusion.
- Dhruva Maharaja and Prahlada Maharaja and many other devotees were able to see the Personality of Godhead face to face apparently in the same body. This means that the quality of a devotee's body changes from material to transcendence.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: You shall be able to see Me there in My usual feature with conchshell, disc, club and lotus in My hand. Because of your transcendental bliss due to always personally seeing Me, you will have no further bondage to fruitive activities.
Seeing the Futility of Material Power
Materialistic people are often blinded by opulence, thinking that universal control or political influence is the goal of life. Prahlāda Mahārāja witnessed the topmost extent of material success through his father, who made even the demigods tremble. As Śrīla Prabhupāda points out, Prahlāda saw this immense power annihilated within a single second by the Supreme Lord. This experience gave him the spiritual insight to reject all material benedictions, seeing clearly that mundane prosperity is temporary and ultimately has no value for the soul.
- I (Prahlada) have seen my father: simply by his eyebrows' twinkling the demigods would be afraid. Such position You (God) have finished in a second. So what is the use of this material position?
- My dear Lord, people in general want to be elevated to the higher planetary systems for a long duration of life, opulence and enjoyment, but I (Prahlada) have seen all of these through the activities of my father.
- Prahlada Maharaja said that, - I have seen my father, such a powerful man, finished. What benediction I shall ask, this material world? Don't allure me. Better engage me as the servant of Your servant.
- Prahlada Maharaja formerly gathered the same experience (as soon as great politicians' lives are finished their popularity, influence and everything else were finished also) by seeing the activities of Hiranyakasipu, his great father.
Seeing with Compassion for Others
While many yogis retire to the solitude of the forest to seek their own deliverance, a pure Vaiṣṇava is moved by the suffering of all living entities. Prahlāda Mahārāja looked at the degenerated state of humanity and felt deep lamentation. We find in the explanations of Śrīla Prabhupāda that Prahlāda’s vision was filled with compassion, as he could not be happy seeing others bereft of the Lord's love. His desire to deliver all souls from the clutches of māyā is the ultimate expression of a devotee's transcendental vision.
- Prahlada Maharaja was unhappy seeing the people, degenerated people, suffering in this material world.
- When he was offered a benediction by Lord Nrsimhadeva, Prahlada Maharaja said: My dear Lord, I only lament to see others bereft of Your love. I am simply lamenting for them and devising various plans to deliver them from the clutches of maya - SB 7.9.43.
- When he was offered a benediction by Lord Nrsimhadeva, Prahlada Maharaja said: My dear Lord, whenever I chant I immediately merge in an ocean of transcendental bliss. I only lament to see others bereft of Your love.
- I (Prahlada Maharaja) see that there are many saintly persons indeed, but they are interested only in their own deliverance. Not caring for the big cities and towns, they go to the Himalayas or the forest to meditate with vows of silence (mauna-vrata).
The Vision of Universal Oneness
For a soul fully absorbed in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, the artificial distinction between material and spiritual varieties no longer exists. Prahlāda Mahārāja reached the stage where he saw everything as Kṛṣṇa. As Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies, this state of existence allowed Prahlāda to dance in ecstasy or immitate the Lord's pastimes because he felt the Lord's presence everywhere. This universal vision is the perfection of seeing, where every object and every atom reminds the devotee of their beloved Lord.
- For one who becomes Krsna conscious, the distinction between material and spiritual varieties does not exist. An advanced devotee like Prahlada Maharaja sees everything as one - Krsna.
- Sometimes, upon seeing the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Prahlada would loudly call in full anxiety. He sometimes lost his shyness in jubilation and began dancing in ecstasy and sometimes, being fully absorbed in thoughts of Krsna, he felt oneness and imitated the pastimes of the Lord.
- Your (Diti's) grandson (Prahlada) will be able to see, inside and outside, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, whose wife is the beautiful goddess of fortune. The Lord can assume the form desired by the devotee, and His face is always beautifully decorated with earrings.
- When the great personality Prahlada Maharaja saw that the Supreme Lord was sitting there, surrounded and worshiped by His intimate associates like Sunanda, he was overwhelmed with tears of jubilation.
Conclusion
The glorious history of Prahlāda Mahārāja teaches us that the ability to see the Divine depends entirely on our internal qualification and the grace of the spiritual master. While the atheist is blinded by material power, the devotee sees the Lord even in matter. As emphasized by Śrīla Prabhupāda, Prahlāda's vision resulted in absolute bliss and an unshakeable determination to deliver all suffering souls. By following in the footsteps of such an authority, we can also hope to attain that transcendental vision which perceives the Supreme Lord everywhere.
