How Prabhupāda Trains His Disciples to Become Perfect Devotees
To build a society capable of delivering the world from illusion, Śrīla Prabhupāda required his followers to rise above ordinary human frailties and become perfect devotees of the Lord. He taught that a true Vaiṣṇava is not a mere sentimentalist, but a highly expert, humble, and perfectly cultured individual. By establishing rigorous daily practices, demanding complete independence from bodily designations, and emphasizing the absolute necessity of cooperative association, he trained an entire generation of Western youth to attain the highest standard of spiritual life.
The Qualities of an Expert Devotee
The transformation of a conditioned soul into a pure devotee is marked by the development of twenty-six distinct transcendental qualities. A profound standard of behavior was demanded by Śrīla Prabhupāda, who completely rejected the idea that renunciation equates to incompetence or foolishness. He taught his disciples that a true devotee is dakṣa (expert), acting as a perfect gentleman who is tolerant, liberal, and capable of executing any task required to push forward the saṅkīrtana movement.
- A devotee's one qualification is daksa, daksa, expert. Out of the twenty-six qualifications, a devotee is always very expert in dealing. It is not that because they have left anything material, they do not know how to deal with material things.
- Devotee means to become fully qualified with all the noble qualities. Devotee does not mean a rascal, at the same time, a devotee.
- Devotee means very liberal and kind to everyone, always gentleman under all kinds of conditions of life.
- Do not fight with anyone, try to remain always very humble and meek like the advanced Vaisnava devotee, always thinking yourself lower than the straw in the street and more tolerant than the tree.
- We want that all our men shall be able to do everything in Krsna Consciousness. A devotee is expert in all things.
Transcending Bodily Designations
Spiritual life officially begins when one realizes they are an eternal spirit soul, not a temporary physical vessel. The absolute necessity of giving up material identities was emphasized by Śrīla Prabhupāda, who warned that clinging to labels like "American" or "Indian" firmly keeps a person on the neophyte platform. He instructed his followers to cast off these rubbish concepts, noting that a Vaiṣṇava belongs to Kṛṣṇa alone and must be respected solely for their spotless devotion.
- Anyone keeping himself under such impression (the rubbish concept of life that I am American, I am European, I am Indian, I am this or that), but at the same time trying to get into Krishna Consciousness is called neophyte devotee, or prakrta.
- Even in the United States, when our devotees chant on the street, American ladies and gentlemen inquire from them whether they are actually Americans because no one could expect Americans to become such nice devotees all of a sudden.
- Many devotees join our Krsna consciousness movement from Europe and America, but one should not therefore consider them European Vaisnavas or American Vaisnavas. A Vaisnava is a Vaisnava and should therefore be given all the respect due a Vaisnava.
- Everyone is neophyte. He should practice determination, that's all. If he cannot practice, then why should he enter into this association? Let him remain aloof.
- All of our devotees in the Western countries give up their old habits of illicit sex, intoxication, meat-eating and gambling. Of course, five hundred years ago these practices were unknown in India - at least in eastern India.
The Power of Devotional Association
The material energy is overwhelmingly strong, and a solitary devotee is easily targeted by māyā. To ensure the spiritual survival of his disciples, Śrīla Prabhupāda repeatedly commanded them to strictly maintain the association of devotees (sādhu-saṅga). He taught that the very purpose of establishing centers worldwide was to facilitate this cooperative association, instructing his followers that they must never leave the society over petty disagreements, but must adjust all conflicts through maturity and tolerance.
- Don't give up the company of devotees. Then it will be lost. We are opening so many centers because to cooperate between devotees and devotees. Even there is inconvenience, don't give up the company of the devotees.
- As Narottama dasa Thakura has stated: tandera carana sevi bhakta-sane vasa, janame janame haya ei abhilasa. The Krsna consciousness devotees must always desire to remain in the society of devotees.
- I am glad to learn that you have now become steady in comparison with your flickering past life. The association of devotees is the most important element in learning Krishna Consciousness way of life.
- Sometimes there may be disagreement and quarrel but we should not go away. These inebrieties can be adjusted by the cooperative spirit, tolerance and maturity so I request you to kindly remain in the association of our devotees and work together.
- The devotees are called sadhu. Therefore we are opening centers, why? To give chance people to make association with the devotees. Sadhu-sanga.
Strict Adherence to the Daily Practices
Without a rigid foundation of spiritual discipline, even the most enthusiastic neophyte will eventually succumb to material desires. A non-negotiable standard of daily practice was outlined by Śrīla Prabhupāda for anyone claiming to be his disciple. He guaranteed that if a devotee simply chanted sixteen rounds of the mahā-mantra attentively, followed the four regulative principles, and deeply studied the society's translated literatures, they would be absolutely protected from falling down.
- Following Krishna's orders means chanting daily 16 rounds, following the four rules and regulations, rising early, associating with devotees, like that. Unless these principles are followed, we cannot expect Krishna's protection.
- My only desire for my disciples is that they chant Hare Krishna Mantra at least 16 rounds, follow the rules and live in association of devotees then you will be happy and peaceful and not disturbed.
- Make sure that the Deity worship is been done nicely and that sankirtana goes on daily. Also the devotees must all follow the rules strictly as well as chant 16 rounds daily and read my books.
- All the devotees connected with the Krsna consciousness movement must read all the books that have been translated (the CC, SB, BG and others); otherwise, after some time, they will simply eat, sleep and fall down from their position.
- Haridasa Thakura daily chanted 300,000 names. Sixteen rounds is about 28,000 names. There is no need to imitate Haridasa Thakura or the other Gosvamis, but chanting the holy name a fixed number of times daily is essential for every devotee.
Complete Dependence on Kṛṣṇa and Guru
A pure devotee operates exclusively on the order of the Supreme Lord, devoid of all independent, mundane ambition. The supreme art of surrender was taught by Śrīla Prabhupāda, who instructed his disciples to stop manufacturing their own plans and to stop treating Kṛṣṇa as an order-supplier for their physical maintenance. He explained that a perfect Vaiṣṇava depends entirely on Kṛṣṇa and is always eager to submissively receive instructions from the bona fide spiritual master and senior devotees.
- Don't make any plan. Accept Krsna's plan. That will be simply giving trouble to Krsna. Therefore, a devotee does not pray even for his maintenance. That is pure devotee. He doesn't give trouble to Krsna even for his bare maintenance.
- A devotee does not go anywhere. He goes to Krsna only, even if he has got material desires. That is the advantage. This advantage: that if you go to Krsna for some material advantage even, then the day will come, you'll forget that material advantage.
- All the devotees are now appreciating the presence of their Spiritual Master by following His instructions although He is no longer physically present. This is the right spirit.
- The secret of success is that one should be eager to serve the Spiritual Master and Krsna simultaneously with the same regard and things will become automatically revealed in the heart of the devotee.
- Every devotee should be ready to take instructions from a superior Vaisnava, and a superior Vaisnava must be ready to help an inferior Vaisnava in all respects.
Conclusion
By perfectly balancing the highest philosophical ideals with strict, practical discipline, an unparalleled standard for spiritual life was established by Śrīla Prabhupāda. He ensured his disciples understood that becoming a perfect devotee is not an automatic or passive process; it requires the deliberate, daily execution of vows, an expert and humble character, and an unwavering commitment to the association of the saṅkīrtana movement. Through his immaculate guidance, he provided the exact formula for any conditioned soul to transcend the material world and achieve pure love of Godhead.
