How Kṛṣṇa Expands through the Energy of Śakti-tattva
Comprehending the multifaceted nature of the Absolute Truth is essential for any sincere student of Vedic philosophy. To clarify this profound subject, Śrīla Prabhupāda extensively explained the relationship between the energetic Lord and His innumerable potencies, known collectively as śakti-tattva. By understanding these divine energies, one can properly appreciate how the Supreme Personality of Godhead remains one while expanding into many.
The Primary Expansions of the Absolute
The Vedic literature declares that the singular Supreme Lord purposefully expands Himself to enjoy unlimited transcendental pastimes. Addressing this dynamic reality, Śrīla Prabhupāda categorized these expansions into three primary groups, namely viṣṇu-tattva, jīva-tattva, and śakti-tattva. While the Lord Himself constitutes the energetic source, the living entities and the varied spiritual and material potencies exist as His divine energies, functioning entirely under His supreme control.
- In the Vedas it is stated that the one becomes many (eko bahu syam). The Supreme Personality of Godhead expands Himself in various forms - visnu-tattva, jiva-tattva and sakti-tattva.
- All the expansions - the visnu-tattvas, the jiva-tattvas and the sakti-tattvas (the Personalities of Godhead, the living entities and the different potential energies) - are different offshoots from the same one Supreme Lord.
- Jiva-tattva, visnu-tattva and sakti-tattva are all integrated with the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and when Krsna appears, He appears with all His integrated parts.
- There are different tattvas, or truths, including isa-tattva, jiva-tattva and sakti-tattva.
The Energetic and the Energy
A clear distinction must be drawn between the original energetic source and the dependent energies that emanate from Him. To remove any philosophical confusion, Śrīla Prabhupāda taught that while viṣṇu-tattva and īśvara-tattva designate the supreme energetic controller, śakti-tattva refers exclusively to the controlled potency. Deliberating on this precise siddhānta ensures that a devotee develops an accurate and unblemished understanding of Kṛṣṇa's supreme position.
- Don't be lazy to discuss about siddhanta. The more you discuss the factual presentation of Visnu-tattva, maya, and jiva-tattva, sakti-tattva. Then it will be clear what is Krsna.
- Either way you say, incarnation of Sadasiva or Maha-Visnu, it doesn't matter. But Advaita Acarya is isvara-tattva. He's not sakti-tattva. He's isvara-tattva. And we are all sakti-tattva. Therefore there is difference. Sakti-saktiman.
- There are many tattvas, such as visnu-tattva, jiva-tattva and sakti-tattva, but above everything is the visnu-tattva, which is all-pervading.
- These (Vasudeva, Sankarsana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha) expansions are the original Deities for all other truths, namely either visnu-tattva or sakti-tattvas.
The Internal Potency and Pure Devotees
The spiritual realm is entirely animated by the Lord's internal potency, which manifests through His most intimate associates. Confirming this deep truth, Śrīla Prabhupāda explained that Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī is the origin of all spiritual energy, expanding into countless goddesses of fortune who are pure śakti-tattva. Consequently, all unalloyed devotees who serve the Lord in various loving relationships are considered direct manifestations of this divine energy.
- Krsna expands Himself into various visnu-tattva forms, and Srimati Radharani expands Herself into various sakti-tattva forms, by Her internal potency, as multiforms of the goddess of fortune.
- All unalloyed devotees are sakti-tattvas, or potencies of the Lord. Some of them are situated in conjugal love and others in filial affection, fraternity and servitude.
- There are innumerable personalities, but not all of them are direct visnu-tattva plenary expansions of God. Many living entities are classified among the sakti-tattvas. Such incarnations, empowered for specific purposes, are known as saktyavesa-avataras.
The Representation in the Pañca-tattva
The descent of Lord Caitanya brought the complete manifestation of the Absolute Truth to the material world in the form of the Pañca-tattva. Within this ultimate group of five, Śrīla Prabhupāda clarified that two members represent the Lord's distinct energies. Specifically, Śrī Gadādhara Paṇḍita is the incarnation of the internal spiritual energy, and Śrīvāsa Ṭhākura represents the marginal living entities, unifying the energetic Lord and His potencies in a shared mission of devotional service.
- Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura comments in his Anubhasya that among the five tattvas, two are energies (sakti-tattva) and the three others are energetic (saktiman tattva).
- Sakti-tattva and jiva-tattva are represented by Gadadhara and Srivasa.
- Although sakti-tattva and jiva-tattva within the category of Panca-tattva, represented by Gadadhara and Srivasa - are worshipers of the Supreme Lord, they are in the same category because they eternally engage in the transcendental loving service of the Lord.
- Nityananda prabhu is visnu-tattva, and similarly Advaita prabhu is visnu-tattva, and according to some opinions, he is between jiva and visnu-tattva. Srivasa is jiva-tattva, and sakti-tattva. So, they are called panca-tattva, the five eminent.
Conclusion
A deep comprehension of the Absolute Truth is impossible without understanding the intricate relationship between the Supreme Lord and His energies. By repeatedly studying the philosophy of śakti-tattva, sincere devotees can fully appreciate the divine nature of the Lord's internal potency and His unalloyed servants. Ultimately, Śrīla Prabhupāda revealed that recognizing these potencies allows one to perfect their own devotional service and return to the eternal spiritual realm.
