Hearing from Authorized Persons
The foundation of spiritual advancement rests entirely on the method by which knowledge is received. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the Absolute Truth is not a subject for empirical research or independent reading. Rather, the Vedic system relies on the descending process of knowledge, wherein the seeker submissively hears from an authorized person. These authorized individuals, situated firmly within the disciplic succession, act as transparent mediums for the Supreme Personality of Godhead, ensuring that the transcendental message is delivered without adulteration or mundane speculation.
The Principle of Hearing (Śruti)
The Vedic process emphasizes hearing over independent reading or intellectual analysis. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the first business of spiritual life is hearing; to know any science, one must hear from an authorized person, and ultimately from Kṛṣṇa Himself. Vedic mantras are not realized simply by learning Sanskrit grammar but by hearing them from the authorized person, which is why the Vedas are called śruti. The mantras and the process of devotional service carry special power only when they are received through this authorized aural reception. Real knowledge comes not from mechanical devices or mundane sources, but directly from the lips of an authorized person.
- The first business is hearing. Tad-vijnanartham. Vijnanartham. If you want to know some science, you must hear from the authorized person. Similarly our process is to hear from Krsna, the most authorized person.
- Vedic mantras are received not by learning Sanskrit, but by hearing from the authorized person. Therefore it is called sruti.
- Mantras and the process of devotional service have special power, provided they are received from the authorized person.
- We have to hear not from a telephone but from an authorized person, for it is he who has real knowledge.
The Medium of Disciplic Succession
To be authorized means to strictly represent the previous teachers in the unbroken lineage. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that an authorized person in the line of disciplic succession does not speak by his own authority; he immediately quotes from the Vedic literature to support his proposition. The word anuśṛṇuyāt means that one must hear from such an authorized person who is always engaged in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. We can truly understand the knowledge of God only by hearing texts like the Bhagavad-gītā from a representative in this paramparā. Such knowledge must come down through authorized persons who know the real purpose of the śāstra.
- A person, authorized person in the line of disciplic succession, he does not speak by his own authority. Immediately he'll quote from the Vedic literature to support his proposition.
- Anusrnuyat means that one must hear from an authorized person who is in the disciplic succession and is always engaged in Krsna consciousness.
- We can understand the knowledge of God by hearing Bhagavad-gita from a person authorized in the disciplic succession.
- Such knowledge must come down through the disciplic succession, through authorized persons who know the real purpose of the sastra.
The Mahājanas and Gurus
The standard for religious behavior is established by the great authorities appointed by the Lord. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that a mahājana is an authorized person, unlike an ordinary common man, and we must take instruction only from such authorities. To understand dharma, or religion, one must follow the footsteps of these authorized persons, as one cannot manufacture religious principles. A guru is one who gives proper direction under the authority of the Vedic injunctions and according to the examples of great personalities. For instance, the Yamadūtas replied with perfect clarity because they had heard directly from Yamarāja, who is one of the twelve authorized persons.
- Mahajana means authorized person. Ordinary jana, common man; and mahajana means authorized person. We cannot take lessons, instruction, from unauthorized person. This authorization must come through the disciplic succession.
- How I shall accept what is dharma, what is religion? Mahajano yena gatah sa panthah. You just follow the footsteps of authorized persons. Then you understand what is dharma. You cannot manufacture.
- One should follow the mahajana, the authorized person. Yamaraja is one of twelve authorities. Therefore the servants of Yamaraja, the Yamadutas, replied with perfect clarity when they said susruma - we have heard.
- Guru refers to one who gives proper direction under the authority of the Vedic injunctions and according to the examples of the lives of great personalities. The best way to mold one's life is to follow in the footsteps of the authorized personalities.
Rejecting Unauthorized Speculation
Accepting authorized guidance necessitates the rejection of unqualified mundane thinkers. Śrīla Prabhupāda warns that to come to the right conclusion, one must hear from authorized persons, not from nonsense rascals, politicians, or diplomats. So-called scholars and Māyāvādīs, with their poor fund of knowledge, cannot understand Kṛṣṇa; one must approach an authorized person instead. True education means learning from authorized personalities like Vyāsadeva, Nārada, and Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura, rather than from modern speculators like Darwin or Freud. Furthermore, if an ordinary person writes something about Kṛṣṇa's līlā, it is useless and should not be touched; it must be written by an authorized person in the sampradāya.
- If you want to come to the right conclusion, then you have to hear from persons authorized, not from the nonsense rascals, politicians, diplomats.
- So-called scholars, Mayavadis, cannot understand Krsna with their poor fund of knowledge. One should therefore approach an authorized person to understand Krsna.
- We want that you learn from Bhaktivinoda Thakura, you learn from Vyasadeva, you learn from Narada. But why you are learning from Freud, from Darwin and such rascals? Education means you should learn from a person who is authorized.
- If some ordinary person has written something about Krsna's lila, you should not touch even. It must be in the sampradaya, must be authorized person. Otherwise it is useless.
Realizing Truth Through Authentic Explanation
Even standard scriptures require the explanation of a qualified guide to be properly understood. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that seeing the Lord is not as important as appreciating Him from authentic literature or the authentic statements of authorized persons. If one reads the Bhagavad-gītā independently, they will get a bewildered impression, but hearing the explanation from an authorized person provides the correct understanding. All the Vedic literatures are compiled by authorized persons like Vyāsadeva specifically for the purpose of hearing. Ultimately, to know things as they are, one has to understand God from the authorized person who embodies the truth.
- Seeing the Lord is not as important as appreciating Him from the authentic literature or the authentic statements of authorized persons.
- Just like Bhagavad-gita, if you read yourself, you get one kind of impression, and if you hear explanation from an authorized person, you get another impression.
- For hearing only, all the Vedic literatures are there, compiled by authorized persons like Vyasadeva, who is the powerful incarnation of Godhead.
- You have to understand about God from the authorized person who knows things as they are. Then you can also know.
Conclusion
Hearing from authorized persons is the singular requirement for entering into the mysteries of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that the Absolute Truth cannot be accessed through the ascending process of mental speculation, independent reading, or the theories of mundane philosophers. It must be received through śruti—the descending process of hearing from a bona fide guru who strictly follows the mahājanas and the disciplic succession. These authorized persons do not manufacture their own religious principles or speak on their own authority; they transparently deliver the perfect message of the Vedas as dictated by the Supreme Lord. By rejecting the misguided interpretations of politicians and Māyāvādīs, and instead submissively hearing the authentic explanations of the śāstra, the conditioned soul is saved from bewilderment. Whether it is appreciating the pastimes of Kṛṣṇa or understanding the stringent laws of dharma, the guidance of an authorized person is indispensable. Ultimately, by following the footsteps of these great personalities, the sincere seeker bypasses the confusion of the material world and acquires real, transformative knowledge of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
