Going Against Kṛṣṇa Means Rebellion Unless Love Is Deepening the Exchange
Going against Kṛṣṇa can mean dangerous rebellion, but in rare pure love it can also appear as intimate exchange. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the conditioned soul suffers because it has revolted against Kṛṣṇa and become controlled by māyā. Yet in Vṛndāvana, Mother Yaśodā, the gopīs, and Kṛṣṇa's friends may complain, argue, or seem to oppose Him out of affection. The difference is decisive: rebellion rejects Kṛṣṇa's will, while loving apparent opposition increases His pleasure.
Rebellion Against Kṛṣṇa Makes One Servant of Māyā
The living being's real position is to be controlled by Kṛṣṇa, not to imitate Him or compete with Him. When the soul revolts against Kṛṣṇa, it does not become independent; it becomes servant of māyā. This is the tragedy of material life, where rebellion appears as freedom but produces bondage. The first step in spiritual intelligence is to understand that going against Kṛṣṇa's supremacy can never bring real happiness.
- Actually, our real constitutional position is to be controlled by Krsna, but because we have revolted against Krsna, therefore we are servant of maya.
- Atheistic, challenging against the supreme authority, challenging the father. Now, without father, I could not see the light of this world. Then what is the use of challenging my father?
- Why they have become conditioned? The reason is they revolted against Krsna. They wanted to imitate Krsna. That is the mentality everywhere.
- You are a rascal, you are against Krsna, why Krsna will give you facility? If you are against Krsna and you want the credit without Krsna, that's not possible. You must be submissive first of all. Then Krsna will give you all.
Association Against Kṛṣṇa Must Be Avoided
Those who oppose Kṛṣṇa's supremacy, topics, service, or authority cannot nourish devotional life. The devotee therefore avoids the company of avaiṣṇavas, atheists, materialists, and speculators who turn the mind away from the Lord. Śrīla Prabhupāda repeatedly stresses that association shapes consciousness, and hostile association poisons devotion. To remain steady, one must seek the company of devotees and reject influences that go against Kṛṣṇa.
- Even great sages, if they are against Your transcendental topics, must rotate in this material world.
- In other words, those who are after material enjoyment and those who are against the supremacy of the Lord are called avaisnava, and their company should be strictly avoided.
- The term sanga-varjitah is significant. One should disassociate himself from persons who are against Krsna. Not only are the atheistic persons against Krsna, but also those who are attracted to fruitive activities and mental speculation.
- These rascals are so dangerous. They are going against the will of Krsna. You see? So one must be very careful to save himself from the poisonous effect of these rascals.
Devotees Do Not Tolerate Blasphemy Against Kṛṣṇa
A devotee may tolerate insults against himself, but blasphemy of Kṛṣṇa or His devotees is spiritually dangerous. In such cases, silence can become complicity because devotion must be protected from offense. The duty of a respectable person is not to hear or approve attacks against the Supreme Lord. This firmness is not egoistic anger, but service to Kṛṣṇa and protection of the devotional path.
- In the assembly of Kurus, when Sisupala spoke against Krsna's being elected president of the assembly, Bhisma supported Him and proclaimed Him to be the Supreme God.
- Krsna did not reply to even a single accusation made by Sisupala, but all the members except few, present in the meeting were very much agitated because it is the duty of any respectable person not to tolerate blasphemy against God or His devotee.
- Sisupala raised his hand and spoke very strongly and fearlessly against Lord Krsna in such a way that Lord Krsna could hear him distinctly.
- When everyone offered respect to Krsna by standing up, Sisupala remained in his seat, but as he became angrier at Krsna's being honored, he stood up suddenly, raised his hand and spoke very strongly and fearlessly against Lord Krsna.
Loving Complaints in Vṛndāvana Deepen the Exchange
Not every complaint against Kṛṣṇa is rebellion. In Vṛndāvana, the gopīs, Mother Yaśodā, and the cowherd boys lodge complaints, rebuke Him, or accuse Him in moods of affection. These exchanges are protected by pure love and increase the sweetness of the Lord's pastimes. Their apparent opposition is actually intimate rasa, meant to delight Kṛṣṇa and His devotees.
- All the gopi friends of Yasoda and Rohini enjoyed the naughty childish activities of Krsna and Balarama in Vrndavana. In order to enjoy further transcendental bliss, they all assembled and went to mother Yasoda to lodge complaints against the restless boys.
- Although they (the gopis) were depressed by the words of Krsna, they did not like to use harsh words against Him. Yet they wanted to rebuke Krsna for His unkind words, and therefore they began to speak in faltering voices.
- When Krsna was sitting before mother Yasoda, all the elder gopis began to lodge complaints against Him so that Krsna could hear.
- This is another instance of indirect insults used against Krsna in ecstatic love.
Enemies May Oppose Kṛṣṇa but Cannot Defeat Him
Demons and opponents may attack Kṛṣṇa, but their opposition only displays His supremacy. Rukmī, Kaṁsa, Śiśupāla, and others stood against Him, yet their resistance could not overcome the Lord's will. Even great powers like Lord Śiva, when placed in battle by circumstance, could not defeat Kṛṣṇa. Opposition to Kṛṣṇa is therefore futile, because the Supreme Lord remains the final controller.
- In great stupidity, Rukmi stood before Krsna, telling Him repeatedly, "Stop for a minute and fight with me!" After saying this he drew his bow and directly shot three forceful arrows against Krsna's body. Then he condemned Krsna.
- Kamsa finally decided not to kill Devaki right away but to wait for the inevitable future. But his mind became absorbed in animosity against the Personality of Godhead.
- Lord Siva then began to release all his selected weapons against the Personality of Godhead. Lord Sri Krsna, without any difficulty, counteracted all these weapons with counterweapons.
- The visnu-cakra Sudarsana (the disc weapon of Lord Krsna) devastated the whole city by burning all these important places, because the King of Kasi and his son Sudaksina were against Lord Krsna. This excursion was more ravaging than modern bombing.
Bhakti Means Acting for Kṛṣṇa's Desire
The devotee's principle is simple: whatever pleases Kṛṣṇa is favorable, and whatever opposes His desire is unfavorable. Ordinary moral calculation is not enough, because bhakti means surrender to the Lord's will. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that even something externally unusual becomes devotional if Kṛṣṇa desires it, while refusal based on personal morality may be against Him. The pure devotee never goes against Kṛṣṇa's will, because love means serving what He wants.
- Krsna is asking me to tell lie. "Yes, I shall tell lie." That is bhakti. If I consider, "Oh, I never spoken lies in my life. How can I speak lie?" that is not bhakti. Because it is pratikula, against Krsna's desire. Common people cannot understand this.
- The devotee never goes against the will of the Lord; anything sent by God is a blessing for the devotee. Therefore Maharaja Pariksit was neither afraid of nor bewildered by such things. That is the sign of a pure devotee of the Lord.
- We should be very much angry. When? When there is anything against God and God's devotee. But generally, for my personal interest, I should not be angry. "All right, if you like to call me by ill names, I don't mind. You go on with your business."
- We should understand that Bhagavad-gita is meant for a person who is a devotee and dear to Krsna, not for the demons, who are against Krsna. The demons are trying to kill Krsna.
Conclusion
Going against Kṛṣṇa means rebellion when the heart rejects His supremacy, service, or will. Yet in the Lord's intimate pastimes, apparent opposition may deepen love through teasing, complaint, rebuke, or affectionate disagreement. Śrīla Prabhupāda helps us see the difference: hostility binds the soul to māyā, while pure love increases Kṛṣṇa's pleasure. The devotee therefore avoids real opposition, honors loving intimacy, and lives by the principle that nothing should be done against Kṛṣṇa's desire.
