God in Vaikuṇṭha - The Eternal Realm of the Supreme Lord
The material universe, with its cycle of creation and destruction, is only a fraction of the total cosmic manifestation. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the supreme destination and original home of the soul is the spiritual sky, where the Supreme Personality of Godhead resides eternally in His majestic, infallible abode known as Vaikuṇṭha.
The Eternal Abode of Vaikuṇṭha
While the material world is subjected to the ravages of time, the spiritual world remains unaffected. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that before the creation of the demigods and the material universes, and long after their ultimate dissolution, the Supreme Lord exists perfectly in His eternal form within the Vaikuṇṭha planets.
- Vasudevo va idam agra asin na brahma na ca sankarah. The meaning of this mantra is that before creation there was no existence of Brahma or Siva, for only Visnu existed. Visnu exists in His abode, the Vaikunthas.
- The original form of the Personality of Godhead is actually the svarupa, or real form, and He eternally resides in the Vaikuntha world (Visnuloka).
- During the creation the Lord also exists as He is in the Vaikunthas, and He also exists as the Supersoul within the material universes. This is confirmed in the Brahma-samhita (5.38).
- The words (of CC Adi 1.53) pascad aham indicate that the Lord exists after the dissolution of the cosmic manifestation. When the material world is dissolved, the Lord still exists personally in the Vaikunthas.
The Opulence and Forms in Vaikuṇṭha
The atmosphere of the spiritual world is saturated with unparalleled majesty and devotion. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how the Lord manifests unlimited forms in Vaikuṇṭha, adorned with absolute opulences, and is served in unalloyed goodness by liberated souls without any trace of material competition.
- In Vaikunthaloka the Supreme Personality of Godhead has four hands and decorations like the Srivatsa mark on His chest and the gem known as Kaustubha.
- The Lord is always served in the Vaikunthaloka by many hundreds and thousands of goddesses of fortune, as stated by the Brahma-samhita (laksmi-sahasra-sata-sambhrama-sevyamanam (BS 5.29)).
- The Lord has unlimited forms and bodily features (advaitam acyutam anadim ananta-rupam (BS 5.33)). These are all situated in Vaikuntha.
- The whole Vaikuntha existence proclaims that everyone there is a follower of the Lord. The Lord is the chief leader there, without any competition for leadership, and the people in general are all followers of the Lord.
Vaikuṇṭha vs. the Material World and Goloka
The Lord's presence is a profound philosophical reality that links His local residence with His universal expansion. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that while God is served with immense awe and reverence in Vaikuṇṭha, He is simultaneously situated in everyone's heart, though He remains untouched by the material elements.
- Essentially there is no material difference between Goloka and Vaikuntha, but in Vaikuntha God is served in unlimited opulence, whereas in Goloka God is served in natural affection. This love of God is awakened by the association of pure devotees of God.
- In the Sankhya-kaumudi it is stated that unalloyed goodness or transcendence is just opposite to the material modes. All living entities there (Vaikuntha) are eternally associated without any break, and the Lord is the chief and prime entity.
- Goloka eva nivasati: although He is perfectly and eternally present in Goloka Vrndavana in Vaikuntha, He is nevertheless all-pervading (akhilatma-bhutah). The all-pervading feature of the Lord is called the Supersoul.
- It is said the Lord is situated in everyone's heart, so that means Krishna is also in the heart of a hog, and he is also in the heart of a demigod, but that does not mean that God has become a hog, or a demigod, God is always in Vaikuntha.
Reaching the Vaikuṇṭha Planets
The supreme destination of the spiritual sky is entirely inaccessible to material science. Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that the only valid methodology for returning to Vaikuṇṭha is the unalloyed process of bhakti-yoga, which secures the devotee an eternal, spiritual body in the association of the Supreme Lord.
- No one can reach the abode of the Lord by any mechanical means of the mind or machine, but one can reach the abode of the Vaikunthalokas simply by following the process of bhakti-yoga because the Lord can be realized only through the bhakti-yoga process.
- Brahmaji believed in this art of bhakti-yoga; he believed in the instruction of the Lord to execute tapa, and he discharged the function with great penance and thus achieved the great success of seeing the Vaikunthalokas and the Lord also by personal experience.
- Although he was offering food to the Lord within his mind, the Lord accepted it nonetheless. Consequently, the Lord in Vaikuntha immediately sent a chariot to bring the brahmana back home, back to Godhead.
- The words janma na eti (BG 4.9) indicate that these living entities remain in their original, spiritual bodies to enjoy the company of the Supreme Personality of Godhead in the transcendental abodes Vaikuntha and Vrndavana.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Śrīla Prabhupāda masterfully outlines the supreme, eternal reality of the spiritual sky. While the material world is temporary and subject to creation and dissolution, the Supreme Personality of Godhead exists eternally in His original form within the Vaikuṇṭha planets. These spiritual planets are the epitome of unalloyed goodness, completely free from the contaminated modes of material nature. In Vaikuṇṭha, the Lord is adorned with the śrīvatsa mark and the kaustubha gem, and is served in unlimited opulence by hundreds of thousands of goddesses of fortune. Because God is the undisputed leader, there is absolutely no competition; everyone is a liberated follower acting in pure devotion. Remarkably, although the Lord is locally situated in Vaikuṇṭha and Goloka Vṛndāvana, He simultaneously pervades the entire material creation as the Supersoul, residing even within the heart of the most insignificant creature without ever compromising His transcendental position. Finally, the Vedic literature confirms that this glorious spiritual abode can never be reached by mechanical spaceships or mental speculation. It is exclusively attainable through the process of bhakti-yoga. By sincerely engaging in devotional service, the living entity develops an eternal spiritual body and returns home, back to Godhead, to enjoy the personal company of the Lord in Vaikuṇṭha forever.
