God in Human Form - The Original Shape of the Absolute Truth
The idea that the Absolute Truth possesses a human-like form is often rejected by mundane speculators and impersonalists. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the original, eternal form of the Supreme Personality of Godhead perfectly resembles a human being. Although fools deride His appearance, His descent in this form is the highest mercy, and the Vedic system even honors the righteous king as the earthly representative of this divine authority, known as nara-deva.
The Original Transcendental Form
Mundane philosophers often assume that the Absolute Truth is a formless energy that occasionally takes on a physical body. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that this is a complete reversal of reality; the Lord's original, eternal, spiritual form resembles a human being, and the impersonal energy simply emanates from His body.
- God has a form just like a human being, two hands, two legs, and He Himself comes to show Him. That is Krsna. He is not nirakara. Isvarah paramah krsnah sac-cid-ananda-vigrahah (Bs. 5.1). Vigraha means form.
- Mayavada philosophy says that the Lord is originally impersonal but assumes a human form and many other forms when He descends. Actually, however, He is originally like a human being, and the impersonal Brahman consists of the rays of His body.
- One should not wrongly conclude that the Lord was formerly unmanifested and has now manifested Himself in the human form.
- There are many philosophers who propound a concept of the Absolute Truth in which God cannot do this or that. They deny the incarnation of God, or the Supreme Absolute Truth in human form.
The Illusion of the Foolish
Because the Supreme Lord mercifully makes Himself accessible by appearing in a human-like form, those lacking spiritual intelligence commit severe offenses against Him. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that, as confirmed in the Bhagavad-gītā, fools deride Kṛṣṇa, mistakenly equating Him with an ordinary mortal.
- In Bhagavad-gita (9.11) it is said: Fools deride Me when I descend in the human form. They do not know My transcendental nature and My supreme dominion over all that be.
- The Lord says in Bhagavad-gita (9.11), avajananti mam mudha manusim tanum asritam: Fools deride Me when I descend in a human form.
- Persons with a poor fund of knowledge do not know this, and therefore they have the audacity to deride Him because He comes before us by His causeless mercy occasionally as a human being. The Lord is not like a human being.
- Demons cannot understand the incarnations of the Lord; they think that His incarnations as a fish or boar or tortoise are big beasts only. They misunderstand the body of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, even in His human form, and they deride His descent.
The Merciful Purpose of His Descent
The Lord's appearance in the material world is never forced by the laws of karma; it is an act of supreme compassion. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that Kṛṣṇa descends in human form specifically to invite human society back to the spiritual world by displaying His enchanting pastimes and protecting His devotees.
- The Supreme Lord bestows the most merciful benediction upon human society when He appears in His human form. It is then that humanity gets the opportunity to engage in different kinds of eternal service to the Lord.
- When the Lord appears in this universe in the form of a human being, He has two purposes, as stated in Bhagavad-gita (4.8) - paritranaya sadhunam vinasaya ca duskrtam: to destroy the demons and protect the devotees.
- Whenever the Supreme Personality of Godhead descends in His human form, He sends ahead all His devotees, who act as His father, teacher and associates in many roles. Such personalities appear before the descent of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- Yes (when you become enlightened, you will see the God). That is after. In the beginning you have to accept this (God's human nature) form, but when you advance, then you will see always.
The King as Nara-deva
Vedic civilization incorporates the divine principle of God's representation in the earthly administration. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that an ideal king is trained to rule as the Lord's direct representative, thereby earning the title nara-deva and the respectful worship of the citizens.
- A king or governmental head must therefore be so competent to rule over the state that the citizens will worship him as God in human form. That is the perfectional stage for the head of any government or state.
- According to the Vedic system, the king is considered a representative of Godhead and is offered respects by the citizens as God in the human form of life.
- In the Sanskrit language the king is also called naradeva, which means "God in human form." His duty is like that of Krsna.
- Since the king is the representative of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, he is sometimes called nara-deva, that is, the Lord as a human being. According to the Vedic injunctions, he is worshiped as God on the material platform.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Śrīla Prabhupāda thoroughly corrects the flawed philosophical assumption that the Absolute Truth is ultimately formless. The Vedic literatures overwhelmingly confirm that the Supreme Personality of Godhead originally possesses an eternal, transcendental form that resembles a human being. The Māyāvāda concept—that God is an impersonal energy who only temporarily assumes a physical body—is an illusion born from a poor fund of knowledge. Because the Lord descends in this accessible human-like shape, fools and demons proudly deride Him, unable to recognize His supreme dominion. However, His descent is the ultimate causeless mercy; by appearing in human form, He protects His devotees, annihilates the miscreants, and most importantly, gives human society the supreme benediction of engaging in tangible, loving devotional service. Furthermore, the Vedic culture practically applies this divine principle through the institution of the monarchy. An ideal king is meticulously trained to act as the Lord's direct representative on earth, thereby earning the title nara-deva, or God in human form. By honoring the Lord's original shape and respecting His authorized representatives, human society perfectly aligns itself with the eternal reality of the spiritual kingdom.
