God and Vyāsadeva - The Perfect Vision of the Absolute Truth
The history of the Vedic literature is intimately connected with the spiritual journey of its compiler, Śrīla Vyāsadeva. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Vyāsadeva, by the grace of his spiritual master, attained perfect vision of the Supreme Personality of Godhead and His multifarious energies, leading to the compilation of the highest transcendental literature.
The Perfect Vision of Vyāsadeva
To properly guide humanity, a spiritual authority must have a flawless realization of the Absolute Truth. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that Nārada Muni certified Vyāsadeva's vision as completely perfect, for in his deep trance, Vyāsadeva saw the complete unit of the Supreme Lord and His parts and parcels.
- O Vyasadeva, your vision is completely perfect. Your good fame is spotless. You are firm in vow and situated in truthfulness and thus you can think of the pastimes of the Lord in trance for the liberation of the people in general from all material bondage.
- Sri Narada Muni, as the spiritual master of Vyasadeva, knew very well the position of Vyasadeva, and thus he certified the qualities of Srila Vyasadeva as fixed in the Absolute Truth with great vow, etc.
- Srila Vyasadeva saw the all-perfect Personality of Godhead, and in this statement the all-perfect Personality of Godhead Sri Krsna is clearly confirmed.
- Srila Vyasadeva saw the all-perfect Personality of Godhead. This statement suggests that the complete unit of the Personality of Godhead includes His parts and parcels also.
Seeing the Lord and His Energies
In his meditation, Vyāsadeva perceived the complete mechanics of the cosmic creation. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that Vyāsadeva saw the Supreme Personality of Godhead along with His internal, marginal, and external energies, clearly understanding how the illusory energy bewilders the conditioned souls.
- Vyasadeva saw His (God's) different energies, namely the internal energy, the marginal energy and the external energy.
- When Vyasadeva realized the Supreme Personality of Godhead, he saw the Lord along with His external potency, which covers the pure knowledge of the individual living entities.
- He (Vyasadeva) also saw His (God's) different plenary portions and parts of the plenary portions, namely His different incarnations also, and he specifically observed the unwanted miseries of the conditioned souls, who are bewildered by the external energy.
- Srila Vyasadeva never states that the Supreme Truth is a jiva, an ordinary living entity.
The Need to Describe Devotional Service
Despite his vast literary achievements, Vyāsadeva experienced a profound sense of dissatisfaction. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that this occurred because Vyāsadeva had not yet sufficiently emphasized the pure devotional service of the Lord, prompting Nārada Muni to instruct him to directly describe Kṛṣṇa's pastimes.
- This may be because I did not (Vyasadeva) specifically point out the devotional service of the Lord, which is dear both to perfect beings and to the infallible Lord.
- If the activities of the Supreme Brahman were material activities, then Narada would not have advised Vyasadeva to meditate upon them. And the param brahma is Lord Sri Krsna, as confirmed in the Bhagavad-gita.
- Please, therefore, describe the Almighty Lord's activities which you have (Vyasadeva) learned by your vast knowledge of the Vedas, for that will satisfy the hankerings of great learned men.
- The devotee of the Lord, Srila Vyasadeva, knows this very well. He is further advised by Srila Narada to expand the idea so that the entrapped conditioned souls may take lessons from him to understand the Supreme Lord as the primeval cause.
The Supreme Authority of Vyāsadeva
Because of his perfect realization, Vyāsadeva stands as the ultimate authority on Vedic knowledge. Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that Vyāsadeva does not worship demigods like Brahmā or the sun, but only the Supreme Lord, and through his divine association, even liberated souls are drawn to the transcendental qualities of God.
- Sri Vyasadeva neither worships Brahma nor the sun but the Supreme Lord, who guides both Brahma and the sun in their creative activities.
- As far as the sages are concerned, besides Himself, Vyasadeva, the author of the Vedanta-sutra, is a great sage, and in the Vedanta-sutra duality is perfectly explained.
- It appears that Sanjaya also, by the grace of Vyasa, could see the universal form of Krsna exhibited to Arjuna. It is, of course, said that Lord Krsna never exhibited such a form before.
- By the association of pure devotees like Vyasadeva, even the liberated soul becomes attracted to the transcendental qualities of the Lord.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Śrīla Prabhupāda establishes that the authorized compiler of the Vedic literatures, Śrīla Vyāsadeva, possessed an absolutely perfect and spotless vision of the Absolute Truth. Through the instructions of his spiritual master, Nārada Muni, Vyāsadeva entered a deep spiritual trance in which he perfectly perceived the Supreme Personality of Godhead. In this divine state, he observed the Lord in His complete feature, along with His internal, marginal, and external energies, definitively realizing that the Supreme Lord is never an ordinary jīva and that the conditioned souls are unnecessarily suffering under the illusion of māyā. Recognizing that his previous compilations—including the Vedānta-sūtra—had failed to sufficiently emphasize the unalloyed devotional service of the Lord, Vyāsadeva felt a profound dissatisfaction. Heeding Nārada's advice to directly describe the transcendental pastimes of Kṛṣṇa, Vyāsadeva compiled his final and supreme masterpiece, the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. Because Vyāsadeva is an empowered incarnation and a pure devotee completely fixed in the Absolute Truth, his teachings and spiritual association hold supreme authority. By taking shelter of Vyāsadeva's perfect vision, not only can the entrapped conditioned souls be liberated from all material bondage, but even those who are already liberated become deeply attracted to the transcendental qualities of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
