God Within - The All-Pervading Witness and Guide
A common misconception among conditioned souls is that if God exists, He must be far away, completely detached from the daily struggles of life. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda consistently teaches that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is intimately involved with every single living entity. Through His expansion as the Paramātmā (Supersoul), the Lord is situated directly within the core of everyone's heart. By understanding the nature and function of God within, a sincere soul realizes that they are never truly alone and that the ultimate spiritual master is already present, waiting to guide them back home.
Entering the Material Cosmos
The material universe is not an independent, self-sustaining machine. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that just as a physical body cannot develop without a spirit soul inside it, the cosmic manifestation cannot function unless the Supreme Lord enters within it.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead creates this material world, and He also enters within it. Andantara-stha-paramanu-cayantara-stham.
- Without His presence within the material world, the cosmic body could not develop, just as without the presence of the spirit within the physical body, the body could not develop.
- Of the three principal agents controlling the three modes of material nature, Visnu is the Almighty; even though He is within material nature for the purpose of maintenance, He is not controlled by the laws of material nature.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead, Visnu, resides within the material world as the sattva-guna-avatara. Lord Siva is the tamo-guna-avatara, and Lord Brahma is the rajo-guna-avatara, but although Lord Visnu is among them, He is not in the same category.
The Infallible Witness
People often commit sinful acts in secret, thinking that no one is watching. Śrīla Prabhupāda shatters this illusion by pointing out that the Supreme Lord is the ultimate witness, sitting directly within the heart, recording every action and desire.
- At night the moon is there. There are so many witnesses. And the Supreme Personality of Godhead is also witnessing within. You cannot escape. He is witnessing from inside, from outside. So how will you escape your sinful activities? No. That is not possible.
- The demoniac person, who has no faith in God or the Supersoul within himself, performs all kinds of sinful activities simply for sense gratification. He does not know that there is a witness sitting within his heart.
- The Supersoul, or Paramatma, however, being present everywhere and within everyone, is also conscious of everyone's existence. The theory that the soul and the Supersoul are one is not acceptable because it is not confirmed by authoritative Vedic literature.
- He is causing the transmigration of the soul, yantrarudhani, sitting on the machine of this body. So both the living entity and God is sitting within this machine. So within your body, my body, and everyone's body, even an ant's, elephant's, tree's body.
The Inner Spiritual Master
For the sincere soul who wishes to understand the Absolute Truth, the Lord within acts as the caitya-guru, the internal spiritual master. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that it is the Lord within who provides the intelligence required to cross the ocean of material nescience.
- When God sees that you are sincere, He is within you, He will dictate, "You do like this, you do like this," and you will make advance.
- As soon as a person agrees to surrender unto the Lord, the Lord takes complete charge of him. Satisfied with the activities of such a devotee, He gives him instruction from within, and thus the devotee becomes pure and advances on the path back to Godhead.
- Real intelligence means linking with the Supreme Personality of Godhead. When this is done, the Supreme Personality of Godhead from within gives one the real intelligence by which one can return home, back to Godhead.
- In Bhagavad-gita it is said: For a devotee who has taken the lotus feet of the Lord within his heart, the Lord gives spiritual enlightenment, known as jnana-dipa, by special mercy from within.
The Perfection of Inner Vision
The ultimate goal of all yoga systems is to perceive the Lord within. While astanga-yogis practice severe austerities to achieve this vision, Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights that pure devotees naturally see the Lord within and without through the power of love.
- Yoga practice is meditation on the Supersoul within; similarly, by chanting Hare Krsna one fixes his mind always on the Supreme Lord. The mind is fickle, and therefore it is necessary to engage the mind by force to think of Krsna.
- Meditation means thinking of the Lord within. Whether one comes to that stage by the astanga-yoga system or by the method recommended in the sastras especially for this present age.
- The topmost yogi is he who constantly thinks of Krsna within himself and chants the glories of the Lord. This system of bhakti-yoga has been existing from time immemorial and is now continuing in this Krsna consciousness movement.
- The Lord is manifested to a pure devotee from within and without. This is one of the mysteries of the devotional relationship in which a devotee and the Lord are bound by a tie of spontaneous love.
Conclusion
A true understanding of the Absolute Truth requires recognizing that God is simultaneously the transcendent creator and the intimate, immanent companion of every living entity. Śrīla Prabhupāda systematically establishes that the cosmic manifestation cannot function, nor can the individual soul transmigrate, without the active presence of the Supreme Lord within. For the rebellious conditioned soul, the Lord sits within as the silent, inescapable witness, observing all actions and awarding the corresponding reactions of karma. However, for the sincere seeker who takes up the process of bhakti-yoga, the Lord within reveals His supreme mercy. Acting as the caitya-guru, He dictates from within the heart, providing the exact intelligence and spiritual enlightenment needed to cut through the darkness of illusion. By constantly chanting the holy names and rendering loving service, the pure devotee achieves the ultimate perfection of yoga: seeing the Supreme Personality of Godhead perfectly, both within and without.
