God May - Beyond Mundane Speculation
Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently warns against the danger of mental speculation when attempting to understand the Absolute Truth. Rather than guessing what God may or may not be like, one must accept the authoritative statements of the Vedic literatures. The Supreme Personality of Godhead is a fully independent person, and while He may appear in countless forms or act in ways that bewilder the mundane mind, everything He does is ultimately for the spiritual benefit of His devotees.
Rejecting "God May Be" Speculation
People with a poor fund of knowledge often invent their own philosophies about the Supreme. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that we cannot approach the Absolute Truth by blindly guessing that God may be a certain way; instead, we must receive clear and precise knowledge from bona fide authorities.
- You cannot speculate on the science of God, "God may be like this. God may be like that." No. You have to know God from God Himself. Just like you cannot speculate about the position of a very big man.
- They have no clear conception of God. Because they are sinful. We can give the name, address and everything of God, clear conception, not vague idea, "God may be like this, God may be like that." Why maybe? He is God.
- God may be within anything, but that does not mean that He is equal or one within. That is the Mayavadi philosophy, a foolish philosophy. Because I am within this room, does it mean that the room and myself are the same? I am more important than the room.
- God may have many thousands of names, but the most perfect name which we can give to the Supreme Personality of Godhead is Krsna. Krsna means "All-attractive." God must be all-attractive. It is not that God is attractive for a certain class of men and not attractive for others.
Appearing in Various Forms
The Supreme Lord has unlimited potencies and expansions. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that while the Lord may manifest before His devotees in numerous features, such as Lord Rāma or Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva, His forms are strictly transcendental and completely devoid of material elements.
- A devotee is always fully surrendered to the loving service of the Lord, and the Lord is visible to the devotee according to the devotee's desires. He may be present in the form of Lord Rama, Lord Krsna, Lord Nrsimhadeva and so on.
- The Lord may appear in any of His many, many spiritual forms, but He is not materially composed, nor has He any difference between body and self. That is the way of conceiving the spiritual form of the Lord.
- He may assume the body of a human being, but that body is not material.
The Independent Will of the Lord
Because God is the supreme controller, He is not bound by any obligations. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Lord may act in ways that seem contradictory or harsh—such as taking away wealth or appearing angry—but He always perfectly orchestrates circumstances to protect His devotees.
- The Lord can act any way He likes. He may take away one's opulence, or He may not. There are varieties of forms of life, and the Lord treats them according to the circumstances, as He chooses.
- Actually the Lord is always affectionate toward His devotees, even though He may appear very angry. Because He is avyayatma - because He never falls down - even when angry the Lord is affectionate toward His devotees.
- The Lord may dictate to tigers and other jungle animals not to disturb His devotee. Haridasa Thakura, a great devotee of Lord Sri Caitanya, used to live in such a cave, and by chance a great venomous snake was a co-partner of the cave.
The Surrender of the Pure Devotee
A pure devotee does not approach God with demands or conditions. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that unalloyed bhakti means accepting whatever the Lord may ordain, whether it brings apparent happiness or distress, simply hoping that He may be pleased.
- Krsna is always with Arjuna, but you will never find they have requested, "Krsna, I am Your friend, and I am in so much difficulty." This is pure devotion. I love God. God may give me any kind of trouble - I do not mind; I will suffer patiently.
- Narayana may order, "Go to hell and preach." "Yes." Tulyartha. Then if You send me in heaven or hell, I do not mind.
- A pure devotee, whether able or unable to see the Lord, always engages in the Lord's devotional service, always hoping that at some time the Lord may be pleased to appear before him so that he can see the Lord face to face.
- The sane man knows that all material possessions are temporary and that the best use of such possessions is to engage them in the service of the Lord so that the Lord may be pleased with him and award him a permanent place in His param dhama.
Conclusion
Mental speculation is a futile method for realizing the Absolute Truth. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the practice of guessing how God may exist only leads to the absurd conclusions of impersonalism. Instead, the Vedic literatures provide exact details about the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Kṛṣṇa. Although the Lord is fully independent and may expand into unlimited spiritual forms, dictate to the material nature, or take away a conditioned soul's opulence, every action He takes is an expression of His supreme affection. The perfection of bhakti-yoga is to abandon all speculative theories and personal demands. By gratefully accepting whatever trials the Lord may send and utilizing all temporary possessions in His service, a sincere devotee ultimately achieves the eternal association of the Supreme Lord.
