God Is The Protector - The Infallible Shelter of the Surrendered Soul
Śrīla Prabhupāda repeatedly warns that the material world is inherently dangerous, describing it as a place where there is danger at every step. Because of this constant vulnerability, the living entity naturally seeks shelter. However, true security cannot be found in temporary material arrangements; it can only be found by taking shelter of the ultimate protector, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
The Infallible Shelter
In our illusion, we often believe that our wealth, our government, or modern medicine will save us from the inevitable dangers of material life. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that these are merely instruments; the actual, infallible protector is Lord Viṣṇu.
- The Ayurveda-sastra recommends, ausadhi cintayet visnum: even while taking medicine, one should remember Visnu, because the medicine is not all and all and Lord Visnu is the real protector.
- Things are contemplated on the ephemeral or external platform, but actually this is not the truth. The actual protector and shelter of everyone is Brahman, the Supreme, not the king.
- This material world is so full of danger, even from our so-called "protectors." But we have got the best Protector, Krishna, so do not worry about anything police or other envious persons. In one stroke Krishna can finish them all.
- The original king is Narayana, or Lord Visnu. People do not know that the original king, or Narayana, is actually the protector of all living entities. As confirmed in the Vedas: eko bahunam yo vidadhati kaman.
The Protector of the Surrendered Soul
The Lord is equally disposed to everyone, but He takes special, personal care of those who fully surrender unto Him. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that recognizing Kṛṣṇa as one's only protector is a fundamental symptom of pure devotional service.
- There are 6 symptoms of surrender: (1) One should perform only those actions favorable for devotional service to Kṛṣṇa. (2) One should give up everything unfavorable for discharging devotional service. (3) One should firmly believe that Kṛṣṇa will protect one in all circumstances and that no one is a better protector than Kṛṣṇa. This conviction should be distinct from the monistic philosophy that one is as good as Kṛṣṇa. Rather, one should always think that Kṛṣṇa, or God, is great and that one is always protected by Him. (4) One should have the conviction that Kṛṣṇa is one's maintainer, and one should not take shelter of any demigod for maintenance. (5) One should always remember that one's activities and desires are not independent. In other words, the devotee should feel completely dependent on Kṛṣṇa, and thus he should act and think as Kṛṣṇa desires. (6) One should always think himself the poorest of the poor and feel totally dependent on the mercy of Kṛṣṇa.
- This verse illustrates the position of a surrendered soul seeking the protection of Krsna. If we remain in this position, knowing that our only protector is Krsna and that our only duty is to serve Krsna, then our life is successful.
- When one surrenders unto the lotus feet of the Lord, these impediments (Attachment, greed and lust) are withdrawn, and one can realize the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore the Lord is the protector of the surrendered soul.
- Brahma said, You are the protector of the surrendered souls; therefore I surrender unto Your lotus feet. Please give me protection from these demons.
The Protector of the Righteous
Throughout cosmic history, whenever the principles of religion are threatened by demonic forces, the Lord personally descends. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights that the primary mission of the Lord's incarnations is to protect His devotees and annihilate the miscreants.
- The way in which Lord Visnu kills the demons and protects the faithful is mentioned in Bhagavad-gita: "In order to deliver the pious and to annihilate the miscreants, as well as to reestablish the principles of religion, I advent Myself millennium after millennium."
- Personality of Godhead who protects such pure devotees is known as the protector of the satvatas.
- While thus being observed by the child, the Supreme Lord Personality of Godhead, the Supersoul of everyone and the protector of the righteous, who stretches in all directions and who is unlimited by time and space, disappeared at once.
- When the Supreme Personality of Godhead appears, He generally appears in a ksatriya family because He comes to establish religious principles and the life of righteousness. According to the Vedic system, the ksatriya family is the protector of human race.
The Protector of True Dharma
A civilized human society relies on spiritual knowledge to progress. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that the Supreme Lord specifically protects the foundational elements of Vedic culture—the brāhmaṇas (intellectuals) and the cows—to ensure society's spiritual health.
- The Lord is the protector of cows and the brahminical culture.
- The Lord is the real protector, but He is unattached to the affairs of protection. He creates brahmanas for the protection of the ksatriyas, and ksatriyas for the protection of the brahmanas. He remains aloof from all activities.
- The brahmanas, the intelligent men or great sages, would control the monarchical powers. Here we have an indication of how the brahmanas elected King Prthu to the throne as the protector of the citizens.
- King Prthu was very respectful to the brahmanas, and he protected them. He also protected persons advanced in age. Whatever the King would decide to do, no one would be able to stop. That is called drdha-sankalpa, or drdha-vrata.
Conclusion
Fear and anxiety are the constant companions of the conditioned soul in the material world. Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that this fear originates from placing our faith in false, temporary protectors—whether they be physical strength, financial security, or earthly leaders. The illusion shatters when we realize that the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Kṛṣṇa, is the original and only infallible protector. He is not a passive observer; He actively descends to protect His faithful devotees and the sacred principles of brahminical culture. The ultimate test of a soul's advancement is their level of surrender (śaraṇāgati). By firmly believing that no one is a better protector than Kṛṣṇa, and by taking absolute shelter at His lotus feet, the devotee achieves a state of profound fearlessness and peace, perfectly secure under the eternal protection of the supreme Lord.
