God Is The Lord of the Universes - The Supreme Jagad-īśvara
Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the cosmic manifestation is not functioning blindly; it is perfectly managed by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is celebrated throughout the Vedic literatures as jagad-īśvara, the Lord of the universe. Understanding His supreme dominion over all planetary systems, demigods, and living entities is essential for realizing the absolute nature of Bhagavān.
Seeking the True Jagad-īśvara
Because the universe is managed by powerful demigods, less intelligent persons sometimes confuse them with the Supreme Lord. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains through the history of Atri Muni that while Brahmā and Śiva are universal directors, they work strictly under the authority of Vāsudeva, the actual Lord of the universe.
- Atri Rsi called for the Supreme Personality of Godhead, jagad-isvara, the Lord of the universe. The Lord must exist before the creation, otherwise how could He be its Lord.
- Atri Muni, by his breathing exercise, concentrated on the Supersoul, or the Lord of the universe. As confirmed in Bhagavad-gita, the Lord of the universe is Vasudeva and, by the direction of Vasudeva, Lord Brahma and Lord Siva work.
- Atri Muni was confidently aware that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the Lord of the universe, so he prayed for the one Supreme Lord. He was surprised, therefore, that three of them appeared.
- "Please let me know who is actually jagad-isvara, the Lord of the universe" - Atri Muni said.
Transcendental in Every Form
The Lord's supremacy is not limited by the form He chooses to exhibit. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that whether the Lord expands into the limitless universal form, lies in the Causal Ocean, or acts as a dependent child in Vṛndāvana, He eternally remains the transcendental Lord of the universe.
- The Garbhodakasayi Visnu is the Lord of the universe, and although He appears to be lying within the universe, He is always transcendental.
- Yasoda took transcendental pleasure in seeing such activities of the Lord (felling of the arjuna trees) in the very yard of her home. The Lord in any condition is Lord of the universe, and He can act as such in any form, gigantic or small, as He likes.
- O Lord of the universe, I see in Your universal body many, many forms-bellies, mouths, eyes-expanded without limit. There is no end, there is no beginning, and there is no middle to all this.
- I meditate upon Lord Sri Krsna because He is the Absolute Truth and the primeval cause of all causes of the creation, sustenance and destruction of the manifested universes.
The Supreme Deliverer and Protector
As the supreme proprietor, the Lord is deeply concerned with the welfare of His creation. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that the Lord of the universe personally descends to annihilate disruptive demonic forces and to bestow boundless transcendental pleasure upon His surrendered devotees.
- Taking a lotus flower in his trunk, he (Gajendra) addressed the Lord, saying, "O original enjoyer, Lord of the universe! O deliverer, as famous as a place of pilgrimage! All are purified simply by hearing Your holy name, which is worthy to be chanted."
- Prahlada prayed to Nrsimhadeva, "My dear Lord of the universe, I am feeling transcendental pleasure in Your presence and have become merged in the ocean of happiness."
- The Lord descends as an incarnation to deliver the devotees and kill the miscreants. The Lord of the universe and of everything would appear to kill the sons of Diti because of their offending the devotees of the Lord.
- Thus the Lord of the universes maintains all planets inhabited by demigods, men and lower animals. Assuming the roles of incarnations, He performs pastimes to reclaim those in the mode of pure goodness.
The Ultimate Goal of Worship
Recognizing the Lord of the universe naturally culminates in unalloyed devotional service. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that throughout all ages, the ultimate perfection for human society is to worship and glorify the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- O King, in this way people in Dvapara-yuga worshiped the Lord of the universe. In Kali-yuga they also worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead by the regulations of the revealed scriptures. Kindly now hear of that from me.
- O Lord of the universe, You are the actual teacher of the science of devotional service. We are satisfied that Your Lordship is the ultimate goal of our lives, and we pray that You will be satisfied with us.
- Lord Brahma saw in the Vaikuntha planets the Personality of Godhead, who is the Lord of the entire devotee community, the Lord of the goddess of fortune, the Lord of all sacrifices, and the Lord of the universe, and who is served by the foremost servitors.
- Your duty as you are doing, even nobody is coming in morning, Lord Jagannatha will hear your kirtana, because we are always in company with the Lord of the Universe.
Conclusion
The supreme position of the Absolute Truth is never compromised or diminished by the cosmic manifestation. Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the original, primeval jagad-īśvara—the undisputed Lord of the universe. While powerful demigods like Lord Brahmā and Lord Śiva manage universal affairs, they act strictly as subordinate servants under His supreme direction. Whether He assumes a majestic, limitless form or plays intimately with His pure devotees in Vṛndāvana, Bhagavān is always the transcendental master of all creation. By recognizing Kṛṣṇa as the ultimate maintainer, protector, and absolute Lord of the universes, a sincere soul naturally abandons all lesser material pursuits. Taking absolute shelter in His holy name and engaging in joyful kīrtana, the devotee achieves the highest perfection of life, eternally remaining in the company of the Lord of the universe.
