God Is Lord Yajña - The Supreme Enjoyer of All Sacrifices
Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the ultimate goal of all Vedic injunctions is to satisfy the Supreme Personality of Godhead. To establish the principles of proper action and accept the offerings of His devotees, the Lord descends as Lord Yajña, the divine personification and supreme enjoyer of all sacrifices.
The Incarnation of Lord Viṣṇu
The Supreme Lord eternally expands into various forms to execute His cosmic pastimes. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights that Lord Yajña is a direct incarnation of Lord Viṣṇu, appearing as the son of Prajāpati Ruci to manifest the original form of spiritual worship.
- Of the two children born of Akuti, the male child was directly an incarnation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, and His name was Yajna, which is another name of Visnu. The female child was a partial incarnation of Laksmi, the goddess of fortune, the eternal consort of Visnu.
- The seventh incarnation was Yajna, the son of Prajapati Ruci and his wife Akuti.
- In his book Laghu-bhagavatamrta, Srila Rupa Gosvami has enumerated the following twenty-five lila-avataras: Catuh-sana, Narada, Varaha, Matsya, Yajna, Nara-Narayana, Kapila, Dattatreya, Hayasirsa (Hayagriva), Hamsa, Prsnigarbha, Rsabha.
- Visnu is described as yajna personified, and mother Laksmi is described as spiritual activities and the original form of worship. In fact, they represent spiritual activities and the Supersoul of all yajna.
The Supreme Enjoyer of Sacrifice
All religious rituals and austerities are ultimately meant for one single destination. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that Lord Viṣṇu is celebrated as the Yajña-puruṣa, and factual yajña only means acting for His divine satisfaction.
- Yajna means Lord Visnu, the yajna-purusa, the enjoyer of all sacrifices (bhoktaram yajna-tapasam sarva-loka-mahesvaram) - BG 5.29.
- Because yajna, sacrifice, is specifically meant for satisfying Visnu, another name for Visnu is Yajnesvara, or Lord of sacrifices.
- Sukracarya said: My Lord, You are the enjoyer and lawgiver in all performances of sacrifice, and You are the yajna-purusa, the person to whom all sacrifices are offered.
- Factual sacrifice means to satisfy the Supreme Lord, Visnu, who is also known as Yajna.
Working for Lord Yajña
The material world binds the living entity through the reactions of his work. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that if one performs his prescribed duties purely for the satisfaction of Lord Yajña, he becomes entirely free from material entanglement.
- The Personality of Godhead, Sri Krsna, advises us as follows: The best policy for doing work is to perform all prescribed duties for the satisfaction of Yajna, the Supreme Being - Visnu, the Absolute Truth.
- Everything should be done for the satisfaction of Yajna, or Visnu. All other actions a person may take are only causes for his bondage. Everyone has to perform yajna according to the Vedic hymns.
- In Bhagavad-gita it is said that one has to work to satisfy Yajna, or Visnu, for any work done without the purpose of satisfying the Supreme Personality of Godhead is a cause of bondage.
- One should work only for satisfying Yajna, or Visnu. The perfectional form of human civilization, known as varnasrama-dharma, is specifically meant for satisfying Visnu.
Ruling the Heavenly Planets
The Supreme Lord never depends on the demigods; rather, they depend entirely on His mercy. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how Lord Yajña directly took charge of universal affairs and acted as the heavenly king, Indra, to maintain cosmic order.
- During that time (of Svayambhuva Manu), the incarnation of the Lord as Yajna took charge of ruling the heavenly planets. The next Manu was Svarocisa.
- The Lord Himself at that time became Indra. Assisted by His own sons like Yama and other demigods, Lord Yajna ruled the administration of the universal affairs.
- Clouds and rainfall are under the management of Indra, the heavenly King, but when Indra is neglectful, the Supreme Lord Himself, who is also known as yajna or yajna-pati, takes the task upon Himself.
- Sukadeva Gosvami said: The Manus, the sons of Manu, the great sages, the Indras and all the demigods, O King, are appointed by the Supreme Personality of Godhead in His various incarnations such as Yajna.
Conclusion
Any activity devoid of God consciousness is simply a cause of bondage within the material world. Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that Lord Yajña appeared to remind humanity that the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Viṣṇu, is the ultimate enjoyer of all religious rituals and the actual sustainer of the universe. By dedicating one's life, occupational duties, and spiritual practices exclusively for the satisfaction of Lord Yajña, a sincere soul safely transcends the cycle of karma and achieves eternal liberation.
