God Is Lord Vyāsadeva - The Literary Incarnation
Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Supreme Personality of Godhead feels deep compassion for the conditioned souls suffering in the material world. To rescue them from the darkness of ignorance, the Lord descends as Lord Vyāsadeva, the great literary incarnation, to compile and disseminate the supreme Vedic knowledge.
The Empowered Incarnation
The Vedic scriptures are not the product of ordinary human speculation. Śrīla Prabhupāda confirms that Lord Vyāsadeva is a highly empowered śaktyāveśa-avatāra and a direct incarnation of Lord Nārāyaṇa, appearing specifically to deliver transcendental knowledge.
- He (Vyasadeva) is a powerful incarnation of Narayana, and he broadcasts the Vedic wisdom to the world. As such, Vyasadeva is offered respects before one chants the Vedic literature, especially the Puranas.
- I offer my respectful obeisances unto Srila Vyasadeva, the incarnation of Vasudeva who compiled the Vedic scriptures. The pure devotees drink up the nectarean transcendental knowledge dropping from the lotuslike mouth of the Lord.
- Incarnations like Brahma, Rudra, Manu, Prthu and Vyasa are His material qualitative incarnations, but His incarnations like Rama, Narasimha, Varaha and Vamana are His transcendental incarnations.
The Compiler of Vedic Wisdom
Understanding the diminishing intelligence and short lifespans of the people in the current age, the Lord mercifully simplified the spiritual science. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how Lord Vyāsadeva divided the original Veda into various branches and compiled the profound Vedānta-sūtra.
- In the seventeenth incarnation of Godhead, Sri Vyasadeva appeared in the womb of Satyavati through Parasara Muni, and he divided the one Veda into several branches and subbranches, seeing that the people in general were less intelligent.
- The Lord Himself in His incarnation (Vyasadeva) will consider his compilation of the Vedic literature to be very difficult for the less intelligent persons with short life, and thus He will divide the tree of Vedic knowledge into different branches.
- The Lord in His incarnation as Vyasadeva compiled the Vedanta-sutra. Here (in BG 15.16) the Lord is giving, in summary, the contents of the Vedanta-sutra.
The Absolute Authority
Because the author of the scriptures is the Supreme Lord Himself, the knowledge presented is free from the four defects of conditioned life. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that there is absolutely no question regarding the supreme authority of Lord Vyāsadeva.
- Sri Vyasadeva is the authorized incarnation of Narayana, the Personality of Godhead. Therefore, there is no question as to his authority. He is the author of all other Vedic literatures, yet he recommends the study of Srimad-Bhagavatam above all others.
- Vyasadeva is an incarnation of Narayana, the Personality of Godhead; therefore there is no question about his authority.
- Your (Vyasadeva) Goodness has perfect vision. You yourself can know the Supersoul Personality of Godhead because you are present as the plenary portion of the Lord.
The Supreme Literary Gift
To ensure that unscrupulous men would not misinterpret the ultimate conclusion of the Vedas, the Lord provided His own natural commentary. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that Lord Vyāsadeva compiled the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, which is the direct literary incarnation of God.
- Srila Vyasadeva, being the incarnation of the Supreme Lord, could foresee the misuse of the Vedanta-sutra by unscrupulous men, and, therefore, he personally supplemented the Vedanta-sutra with the Bhagavata Purana.
- This Srimad-Bhagavatam is the literary incarnation of God, and it is compiled by Srila Vyasadeva, the incarnation of God. It is meant for the ultimate good of all people, and it is all-successful, all-blissful and all-perfect.
- Srimad-Bhagavatam was collected by the incarnation of God, Vyasadeva, and it was later taught to his son, Sukadeva Gosvami. This (CC Madhya 25.145) is a quotation from Srimad-Bhagavatam.
Conclusion
The appearance of Lord Vyāsadeva is an unparalleled expression of divine mercy. Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that without the literary incarnation of Godhead, the conditioned souls would be completely lost in the darkness of the material world. By empowering Himself to compile the Vedānta-sūtra and the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Lord Vyāsadeva eternally preserves the absolute science of Kṛṣṇa consciousness, providing a direct pathway back home, back to Godhead for all sincere seekers.
