God Is Lord Vāsudeva - The All-Pervading Supreme Truth
Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the Absolute Truth is ultimately realized as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Vāsudeva. He is the primeval Lord, the all-pervading Supersoul, and the ultimate destination for all great sages, philosophers, and devotees who have attained the perfection of knowledge.
The Primary Quadruple Expansion
The Absolute Truth eternally manifests in majestic expansions to manage the spiritual and material skies. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Lord Vāsudeva is the primary Deity of the original catur-vyūha, expanding further into Saṅkarṣaṇa, Pradyumna, and Aniruddha.
- Devotees believe that the Supreme Personality of Godhead expands Himself into four other eternal transcendental forms - Vasudeva, Sankarsana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha.
- Adi-caturbhuja, the original expansions from Baladeva, are Vasudeva, Sankarsana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha. All of Them are visnu-tattvas, or nondifferent Personalities of God. In the incarnation of Rama, these expansions appeared for particular pastimes.
- It is to be accepted that Sankarsana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha are as good as Lord Vasudeva, for They all have inconceivable power and can accept transcendental forms like Vasudeva.
- In all Vaisnava literature it is said that worshiping these quadruple forms (Sankarsana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha) is as good as worshiping the Supreme Personality of Godhead Vasudeva, who in His different expansions, complete in six opulences.
The Ultimate Goal of Knowledge
The perfection of philosophical research is not merely intellectual, but spiritual. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights that after many lifetimes of arduous study, a truly wise mahātmā ultimately surrenders, realizing that Lord Vāsudeva is the cause of all causes.
- We hear, vasudevah sarvam iti sa mahatma sudurlabhah: (BG 7.19) if one knows that Vasudeva is the original cause of all causes, he becomes a perfect mahatma.
- As it is confirmed in Bhagavad-gita, after many, many births the knowledge comes to the conditioned soul that Vasudeva is great, He is master, and He is Lord.
- An empiric philosopher in search of spiritual knowledge may endeavor most laboriously for many, many births in mental speculation, but it is not possible for him to know that everything emanates from the Personality of Godhead Vasudeva.
- Vasudeva is the ultimate aim in culturing all different branches of knowledge. Culture of knowledge leading one to the transcendental plane of meeting Vasudeva is real knowledge.
The All-Pervading Supersoul
God is never limited to a single location. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that as the Paramātmā, or Supersoul, Lord Vāsudeva pervades the entire cosmic manifestation and resides intimately within the heart of every living entity.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead is known as Vasudeva because He lives everywhere. The word vas means "to live."
- Paramatma (Vasudeva) is situated in everyone's heart, as confirmed in Bhagavad-gita. The Lord says: "To those who are constantly devoted and who worship Me with love, I give the understanding by which they can come to Me."
- All living entities, from Brahma to the insignificant ant, are expansions of Vasudeva, as accepted in all the srutis and smrtis.
- The Supreme Lord, Vasudeva, who created the cosmic manifestation, exhibits Himself as all-pervading, like the sky that holds clouds. When the creation is annihilated, everything enters into the Supreme Lord, Visnu, and varieties are no longer manifested.
The Platform of Pure Goodness
To perceive the Supreme Lord, one must transcend the three modes of material nature. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes this state of unalloyed pure goodness as viśuddha-sattva, or the vāsudeva platform, where God is directly revealed.
- Sattvam visuddham vasudeva-sabditam (SB 4.3.23). Above material nature is the position called vasudeva, or freedom from material contamination. Only in that position can one perceive the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vasudeva.
- The vasudeva platform refers to the stage at which material contamination is conspicuous by absence only. Because on the vasudeva platform one can see God face to face, the Lord is also called Vasudeva.
- The quadruple forms have a spiritual existence that can be realized in vasudeva-sattva (suddha-sattva), or unqualified goodness, which accompanies complete absorption in the understanding of Vasudeva.
- When you are transcendental to this material goodness, that stage is called Vasudeva stage. And Vasudeva stage, that means God realization.
The Supreme Enjoyer of Sacrifices
Vedic rituals are not simply meant for material gain; their true purpose is divine satisfaction. Śrīla Prabhupāda confirms that Lord Vāsudeva is the ultimate enjoyer of all sacrifices, and without pleasing Him, all such activities are completely fruitless.
- Another name of Vasudeva is Yajna (sacrifice), and in the Bhagavad-gita it is clearly stated that all sacrifices and all activities are to be conducted for the satisfaction of Yajna, or Visnu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. This is the case also with the yoga systems.
- One may argue that the Vedic activities are based on sacrificial ceremonies. That is true. But all such sacrifices are also meant for realizing the truth about Vasudeva.
- If one is not interested in satisfying Lord Visnu, Vasudeva, all his so-called auspicious activities are fruitless.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead Vasudeva can accept offerings from His devotees of the results of their prescribed duties.
Refuting the Impersonalists
Māyāvādī philosophers attempt to impose mundane logic upon the spiritual nature of God. Śrīla Prabhupāda strictly refutes the impersonalist idea that Lord Vāsudeva and His expansions are subject to the material laws of cause and effect.
- Sankaracarya has tried to prove that Vasudeva, Sankarsana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha expand through cause and effect. He has compared Them with earth and earthen pots. That is completely ignorant, for there is no such thing as cause and effect in Their expansions.
- Vasudeva, Sankarsana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha, being distinct individual persons, cannot be one. Therefore if They are accepted as absolute, full and equal, there would have to be many Personalities of Godhead.
- Srila Rupa Gosvami has refuted the charges directed against the devotees by Sripada Sankaracarya regarding their explanation of the quadruple forms Vasudeva, Sankarsana, Pradyumna and Aniruddha.
The Power of Devotional Service
The path of pure devotional service is the only way to break free from material entanglement. Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that when a soul becomes fully dedicated to Lord Vāsudeva, all good qualities, knowledge, and detachment automatically awaken.
- A devotee is narayana-parayana, or vasudeva-parayana, which means that the path of Vasudeva, or the devotional path, is his life and soul.
- By devotional service one has to become vasudeva-parayana, devotee of Lord Vasudeva. That's all. That is being taught here: how to become lover of Vasudeva.
- If one seriously engages in devotional service to Lord Vasudeva, jnana and vairagya are automatically manifest in one's person. There is no doubt of this.
- All the demigods and their exalted qualities, such as religion, knowledge and renunciation, become manifest in the body of one who has developed unalloyed devotion for the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vasudeva.
Conclusion
To properly understand the absolute nature of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one must transcend mundane speculation and enter the platform of pure goodness. Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that Lord Vāsudeva is the ultimate origin of the catur-vyūha, the all-pervading Supersoul, and the supreme enjoyer of every sacrifice. By rejecting the flawed theories of the impersonalists and completely surrendering to the lotus feet of Lord Vāsudeva in pure devotional service, a sincere soul inherently acquires all transcendental knowledge, conquers material illusion, and attains the eternal perfection of God realization.
