God Is Lord Matsya - The Transcendental Fish Incarnation
Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is entirely free to appear in any form He desires to protect His devotees and maintain the universe. By His causeless mercy, He descended as Lord Matsya, the supreme fish incarnation, to rescue the Vedic wisdom and save humanity from a devastating cosmic flood.
The Transcendental Fish Incarnation
The Vedic literatures describe many majestic descents of the Supreme Lord. Śrīla Prabhupāda confirms that Lord Matsya is a primary līlā-avatāra, possessing an eternal, spiritual form that foolish atheists mistakenly consider to be an ordinary aquatic beast.
- In different millennia there are different incarnations, and they are innumerable, although some of them are very prominent, such as Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Rama, Nrsimha, Vamana and many others. These incarnations are called lila incarnations.
- It is not imagination but a fact that the Supreme Personality of Godhead, by His sweet will, appears in different incarnations, such as Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Nrsimha, Vamana, Parasurama, Ramacandra, Balarama, Buddha and many other forms.
- The incarnations such as Matsya, the fish incarnation, appear in different yugas for specific pastimes.
- The Lord does not create the fish incarnation; He eternally has such a form, and the appearance and disappearance of such an incarnation serves particular purposes.
Rescuing the Vedas
At the beginning of creation, the foundational knowledge of the universe was stolen. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Lord Matsya plunged into the depths of the cosmic waters to kill the demon Hayagrīva and restore the Vedas for the benefit of all living entities.
- Understanding the acts of the great demon Hayagriva, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Hari, who is full of all opulences, assumed the form of a fish and saved the Vedas by killing the demon.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead took the incarnation of a fish (Matsya) at the beginning of the period of Svayambhuva Manu and saved the Vedas.
- Your Lordship previously accepted incarnations as a fish, a horse, a tortoise, Narasimhadeva, a boar, a swan, Lord Ramacandra, Parasurama and, among the demigods, Vamanadeva, to protect the entire world by Your mercy.
- All Your pastimes and incarnations certainly appear for the welfare of all living entities. Therefore, my Lord, I wish to know the purpose for which You have assumed this form of a fish.
Protecting King Satyavrata During the Inundation
When the universe was submerged in a great flood, the Lord's pure devotees required ultimate protection. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how Lord Matsya mercifully appeared to guide a massive boat carrying King Satyavrata, the great sages, and the seeds of life.
- When there was a complete inundation after the period of the Caksusa Manu and the whole world was deep within water, the Lord (Matsya) accepted the form of a fish and protected Vaivasvata Manu, keeping him up on a boat.
- Within a week there would be an inundation throughout the universe and that the fish incarnation would protect the King, along with the rsis, herbs, seeds and other living entities, in a boat, which would be attached to the fish's horn.
- The Manu named King Satyavrata formerly saved himself by tying the small boat of the entire world to the horn of the Matsya avatara, the fish incarnation.
- At the end of the millennium, the would-be Vaivasvata Manu, of the name Satyavrata, would see that the Lord in the fish incarnation is the shelter of all kinds of living entities, up to those in the earthly planets.
The Supreme Friend and Spiritual Master
The Supreme Lord never neglects those who fully surrender to Him. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights how King Satyavrata accepted Lord Matsya as his supreme spiritual master, receiving absolute transcendental knowledge while safely gliding through the apocalyptic waters.
- My Lord, You are the supreme well-wishing friend of everyone, the dearmost friend, the controller, the Supersoul, the supreme instructor and the giver of supreme knowledge and the fulfillment of all desires.
- Worship of Your lotus feet is never useless because You are the supreme friend and dearmost Supersoul of everyone. You have therefore manifested Your form as a fish.
- We (King Satyavrata) are interested in self-realization. Therefore we accept You, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, as our spiritual master, for You are able to see in all directions and are omniscient like the sun.
- One who narrates this description of the Matsya incarnation and King Satyavrata will certainly have all his ambitions fulfilled, and he will undoubtedly return home, back to Godhead.
Conclusion
To properly understand the omnipotence of the Absolute Truth, one must study His glorious incarnations. Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that Lord Matsya is not an ordinary aquatic creature, but the supreme savior who protected the Vedic wisdom and safely navigated His pure devotees through the catastrophic cosmic inundation. By faithfully hearing and chanting the pastimes of the transcendental fish incarnation, a sincere soul is washed clean of all material contamination and becomes eligible to return to the spiritual world.
