God Is Lord Kūrma - The Supreme Tortoise Incarnation
Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Supreme Personality of Godhead assumes various transcendental forms to perform extraordinary pastimes. One such magnificent appearance is Lord Kūrma, the tortoise incarnation, who mercifully descended to support the cosmic churning of the milk ocean.
The Tortoise Incarnation
Throughout the different millennia, the Supreme Lord appears in numerous forms known as līlā-avatāras. Śrīla Prabhupāda confirms that Lord Kūrma is a direct incarnation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, perfectly appearing as a gigantic tortoise.
- In different millennia there are different incarnations, and they are innumerable, although some of them are very prominent, such as Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Rama, Nrsimha, Vamana and many others. These incarnations are called lila incarnations.
- It is not imagination but a fact that the Supreme Personality of Godhead, by His sweet will, appears in different incarnations, such as Matsya, Kurma, Varaha, Nrsimha, Vamana, Parasurama, Ramacandra, Balarama, Buddha and many other forms.
- Some of the pastime incarnations are the fish incarnation, the tortoise incarnation, Lord Ramacandra, Lord Nrsimha, Lord Vamana and Lord Varaha. There is no end to them.
- Your Lordship previously accepted incarnations as a fish, a horse, a tortoise, Narasimhadeva, a boar, a swan, Lord Ramacandra, Parasurama and, among the demigods, Vamanadeva, to protect the entire world by Your mercy.
The Pivot of Mandara Mountain
When the demigods and demons united to extract nectar from the ocean of milk, they used Mandara Mountain as a churning rod. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how the Lord took the shape of a tortoise to act as the supreme pivot, preventing the heavy mountain from sinking.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead, appearing in His incarnation as a tortoise, dove deep into the ocean to carry Mandara Mountain on His back.
- The eleventh incarnation of the Lord took the form of a tortoise whose shell served as a pivot for the Mandaracala Hill, which was being used as a churning rod by the theists and atheists of the universe.
- Seeing the situation that had been created by the will of the Supreme, the unlimitedly powerful Lord, whose determination is infallible, took the wonderful shape of a tortoise, entered the water, and lifted the great Mandara Mountain.
- The Lord in His tortoise incarnation became the pivot for the churning rod, and thus His ornaments were polished by the turning of Mandara Hill.
A Pleasing Transcendental Sensation
The immense weight and friction of the churning process would annihilate an ordinary being. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda reveals that because Lord Kūrma is the Absolute Truth, He simply experienced the intense churning as a comfortable and pleasing scratching sensation.
- The demigods and demons were churning the ocean of milk with the Mandara Mountain in order to extract nectar. The mountain moved back and forth, scratching the back of Lord Tortoise, who, while partially sleeping, was experiencing an itching sensation.
- When the demigods and demons, by the strength of their arms, rotated Mandara Mountain on the back of the extraordinary tortoise, the tortoise accepted the rolling of the mountain as a means of scratching His body, and thus He felt a pleasing sensation.
- By churning the ocean of milk, Ajita produced nectar for the demigods. In the form of a tortoise, He moved here and there, carrying on His back the great mountain known as Mandara.
Beyond Material Conception
Foolish persons wrongly assume that when God appears as a boar, fish, or tortoise, He assumes a mundane, material body. Śrīla Prabhupāda stresses that all of the Lord's forms are completely spiritual, and sincerely worshiping them saves one from hellish conditions.
- Demons cannot understand the incarnations of the Lord; they think that His incarnations as a fish or boar or tortoise are big beasts only. They misunderstand the body of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, even in His human form, and they deride His descent.
- There are many incarnations of the Supreme Lord: Varaha murti (the boar form), Kurma murti (the tortoise form), Hayagriva murti (the form of a horse) and so on. Yet we should never think any of Them material.
- When he (Srila Ramanujacarya) understood that the kurma-murti was another form of Lord Visnu, he instituted very gorgeous worship of Lord Kurma. This statement is found in the Prapannamrta - Chapter Thirty-six.
- May Devarsi Narada protect me from committing offenses in worshiping the Deity, and may Lord Kurma, the tortoise, protect me from falling to the unlimited hellish planets.
Conclusion
To understand the extraordinary capabilities of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one must hear about His magnificent incarnations. Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that Lord Kūrma is not an ordinary aquatic creature, but the supreme sustainer of the universe who effortlessly carried Mandara Mountain on His back. By meditating on His transcendental pastimes and worshiping His divine form, a sincere devotee is protected from material degradation and is gradually elevated to the ultimate spiritual perfection.
