God Is Lord Śeṣa - The Sustainer of the Universe
The Supreme Personality of Godhead maintains His vast cosmic creation and eternal spiritual pastimes through various divine expansions. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that Lord Śeṣa, also known as Ananta, is a magnificent incarnation who simultaneously sustains the universe and serves as the ultimate embodiment of personal devotion to the Lord.
The Expansion of Lord Balarāma
The Supreme Lord expands Himself into innumerable forms to execute different purposes. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that Lord Śeṣa is a direct expansion of Lord Balarāma and Lord Saṅkarṣaṇa, possessing all the transcendental qualities of the absolute viṣṇu-tattva.
- Balarama, the first expansion of Krsna, expands Himself in five forms: (1) Maha-sankarsana, (2) Karanodakasayi, (3) Garbhodakasayi, (4) Ksirodakasayi, and (5) Sesa.
- Sankarsana is the first expansion of Vasudeva, and because He appears by His own will, He is called svarat, fully independent. He is therefore infinite and transcendental to all limits of time and space. He Himself appears as the thousand-headed Sesa.
- Examples of direct or saksad-avataras are the Sesa incarnation and the Ananta incarnation. In Ananta the power for sustaining all planets is invested, and in the Sesa incarnation the power for serving the Supreme Lord is invested.
- The incarnation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead known as Sesa or Ananta has unlimited strength, fame, wealth, knowledge, beauty and renunciation.
The Sustainer of All Planets
The massive planets floating in outer space are not merely held by blind physical laws. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the phenomenon scientists loosely call gravity is actually the inconceivable energy of Lord Śeṣa, who effortlessly holds the entire universe upon His infinite hoods.
- The Lord of Svetadvipa expands Himself as Sesa Naga, who sustains all the planets upon His innumerable hoods. These huge global spheres are compared to grains of mustard resting on the spiritual hoods of Sesa Naga.
- They say: "Law of gravitation", we say Sankarsana. Sankarsana. So He is holding every planet, and it is said that all these universes are resting on the hood of Sesa-naga just like a small grain of mustard.
- Sesa Sankarsana, who holds all the planets on His heads, expands Himself in different bodies to render service to Lord Krsna.
- The Sankarsana of the second group of quadruple forms appears as Rama, taking with Him Sesa, who bears the global spheres.
The Embodiment of Personal Service
Beyond His role in cosmic maintenance, Lord Śeṣa represents the highest standard of loving devotion. Śrīla Prabhupāda reveals that Lord Śeṣa intimately serves the Supreme Lord by transforming Himself into all necessary spiritual paraphernalia.
- The first four of these forms (Maha-sankarsana, Karanodakasayi, Garbhodakasayi and Ksirodakasayi) are responsible for the cosmic manifestations, whereas Sesa is responsible for personal service to the Lord.
- That Ananta Sesa is the devotee incarnation of Godhead. He knows nothing but service to Lord Krsna.
- The Lord’s clothing, bedding, slippers and everything required as an ordinary necessity are all transformations of Sesa, Visnu, the expansion of Sri Baladeva.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead invested the power of personal service in Lord Sesa, and He invested the power to rule the earth in King Prthu. Lord Parasurama received the power to kill rogues and miscreants.
The Divine Bedstead and Incarnations
In the execution of His divine service, Lord Śeṣa constantly accompanies the Supreme Lord across various millenniums and incarnations. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that whether manifesting as the bed of Lord Viṣṇu or incarnating alongside Him, Lord Śeṣa is eternally present.
- In each and every universal globe, the same Maha-visnu enters again as Garbhodakasayi Visnu and lies there on the serpentlike Sesa incarnation. From His navel sprouts a lotus stem, and on the lotus, Brahma, the lord of the universe, is born.
- With the perspiration produced from His own body, the Lord filled half the universe with water. He then lay down on that water, on the bed of Lord Sesa.
- The Padma Purana describes that Ramacandra is Narayana and that Laksmana, Bharata and Satrughna are respectively Sesa, Cakra and Sankha - the conchshell in the hand of Narayana.
- While Vasudeva was carrying his son Krsna in the falling rain, Lord Sesa in the shape of a serpent spread His hood over the head of Vasudeva so that he would not be hampered by the rainfall.
Conclusion
To understand the absolute nature of the Supreme Lord requires appreciating the unlimited power of His divine expansions. Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that Lord Śeṣa is not a mundane serpent or an ordinary soul, but a supreme, unlimited viṣṇu-tattva incarnation. By supporting the countless planetary systems and simultaneously expanding as the Lord's eternal paraphernalia, Lord Śeṣa demonstrates that pure, unmotivated service is the supreme characteristic of the Absolute Truth.
