God Is All-merciful - The Boundless Compassion of the Supreme Lord
In the material world, compassion is often limited by prejudice and partiality. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Supreme Personality of Godhead, however, is all-merciful. His boundless compassion is distributed liberally to every living entity—from the most exalted pure devotee to the most stubborn atheist—always guiding them toward ultimate liberation.
The Universal Distribution of Mercy
The Lord's mercy knows no bounds and is not restricted to His immediate followers. Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that while it may sometimes seem that the Lord acts harshly toward demons, He actually holds no hatred for anyone, and His actions universally benefit all classes of men.
- God is all-merciful.
- Bali Maharaja appreciated the Lord's mercy not only upon him but upon many other demons. Because this mercy is liberally distributed, the Supreme Lord is called all-merciful.
- It is known that God is all-merciful, but here (in BG 16.20) we find that God is never merciful to the demoniac.
- It may be then argued in this connection (BG 16.20) that God should not be advertised as all-merciful if He is not merciful to demons. In answer to this question, in the Vedanta-sutra we find that the Supreme Lord has no hatred for anyone.
Reclaiming the Conditioned Souls
The entire cosmic manifestation is designed to cure the living entity's rebellion. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that Kṛṣṇa is constantly mindful of our suffering and actively works—often more eagerly than we do—to eradicate our false sense of enjoyment and bring us back to the spiritual world.
- The all-merciful Lord is always mindful of our difficulties in the mundane world, and He is more eager to get us to return home, back to Godhead, than we are eager to go.
- Krsna descends to eradicate this false sense of enjoyment and thus reclaim conditioned souls back to Godhead. That is the all-merciful nature of the Lord for the fallen souls.
- The all-merciful Lord gave them a chance to have their births in the families of pious brahmanas so that they could progress toward salvation.
- Partiality in receiving the Lord's mercy is relative to the recipient, and it is not due to the partiality of the all-merciful Lord.
Tactfully Correcting the Devotee
The path of devotional service requires absolute purity, and the Lord ensures His devotees achieve it. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that when a neophyte tries to mix material enjoyment with spiritual life, the Lord expertly and tactfully intervenes to correct their vision and save them from illusion.
- When a neophyte devotee deviates from the path of pure devotion and wants to simultaneously enjoy sense gratification and discharge devotional service, the all-merciful Lord very tactfully corrects.
- The all-merciful Lord very tactfully corrects the bewildered devotees by exhibiting before him the real nature of this material world.
- Bhismadeva appreciated the all-merciful attitude of the Lord because He did not leave Arjuna alone, although He was disturbed by the sharpened arrows of Bhismadeva, nor was He reluctant to come before Bhisma's deathbed.
Facilitating the Living Entity
The Lord's mercy also perfectly accommodates the minute free will of every soul. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how the Supersoul fulfills the desires of the living entities, protecting them from nescience if possible, but also helping them forget Him if they stubbornly choose to reject His guidance.
- The all-merciful Lord, who is situated in everyone's heart as the witness, the Supersoul, awakens him (the individual soul) and reminds him of his past desires, and thus he begins to act accordingly in his next life.
- When the living entity prefers to misuse his independence and glide down towards nescience, the all-merciful Lord first of all tries to protect him from the trap, but when he persists in gliding down to hell, the Lord helps him to forget his real position.
- This (thinking of God as virat-rupa they can become qualified to actually see the transcendental form of the Lord in the future) is a favor of the all-merciful Lord to the atheists and the gross materialists.
- When the great sages and thinkers who are residents of Janaloka, Tapoloka and Satyaloka heard the tumultuous voice of Lord Boar, which was the all-auspicious sound of the all-merciful Lord, they chanted auspicious chants from the three Vedas.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Śrīla Prabhupāda beautifully illustrates that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is defined by His boundless, unconditional compassion. As the all-merciful Lord, He descends into the material world not out of obligation, but out of an intense eagerness to reclaim the conditioned souls—an eagerness that far exceeds our own desire to return to Him. His mercy is distributed liberally to everyone. For the demons, His apparent punishments are actually benedictions that grant them salvation, confirming the Vedānta-sūtra statement that He holds absolutely no hatred for anyone. For atheists and gross materialists, He provides the concept of the virāṭ-rūpa to gradually elevate their consciousness. For His devotees, His mercy is incredibly intimate and tactful; when a neophyte mistakenly tries to mix sense gratification with devotional service, the Lord expertly corrects them by exposing the frustrating reality of the material world. Finally, as the Supersoul, He perfectly facilitates the free will of every living entity. He tries to protect the soul from nescience, yet graciously allows them to forget Him if they stubbornly persist in illusion, always waiting to offer them another chance in the future. Thus, in every action and every circumstance, the Supreme Lord acts exclusively out of infinite, all-merciful love.
