God Has Nothing To Do - The Supreme Independence of the Absolute Truth
In the material world, importance is often measured by how busy a person is; a great leader must constantly work to maintain their position. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Vedic literatures provide the exact opposite definition for the Supreme Personality of Godhead: because God is absolutely perfect and complete, He literally has nothing to do.
The Vedic Definition of God
The most authoritative texts of Vedic wisdom unequivocally state that the Absolute Truth has no assigned duties. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that any conception of God that requires Him to work, meditate, or perform austerities to achieve His status is fundamentally flawed and entirely rejected by the Upaniṣads.
- In the Vedas the definition of God is given, "God has nothing to do."
- Our definition of God is, na tasya karyam karanam ca vidyate (Svetasvatara Upanisad 6.8). "He has nothing to do." This is God. Na tasya karyam karanam ca vidyate: "He has nothing to do." He is simply enjoying, dancing with the gopis, that's all.
- Even he (the President of the United States) is required to do so many things. If he does not do anything, he is no longer the supreme man. In Vedic literatures, however, we find that God has nothing to do - na tasya karyam karanam ca vidyate.
- So this is God; in the lap of His mother He is God. He does not have to become God by meditation, penance, austerity or by following rules or regulations. He is substantially and eternally God, and He has nothing to do.
The Work of His Omnipotent Energies
If God has nothing to do, how is the vast and complex cosmic manifestation managed? Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Lord possesses infinite, multifarious energies that act automatically and systematically under His supreme direction, without requiring His personal, physical effort.
- As stated in the Vedas: "The Supreme Lord has nothing to do, and no one is found to be equal to or greater than Him, for everything is done naturally and systematically by His multifarious energies."
- He (God) has nothing to do personally, for since His potencies are perfect, everything is immediately done by His will.
- The Supreme Lord has got multi-various energies. They are acting. He hasn't got to do anything personally. - Just like the big man in establishment, he hasn't got to do anything personally. But he has got so many energies, so many servants, secretaries.
- Personally He (the Lord) has nothing to do, for everything is being carried out by His omnipotent energies. This is confirmed by the Vedic mantras: parasya saktir vividhaiva sruyate svabhaviki jnana-bala-kriya ca.
Complete Self-Sufficiency
The Supreme Personality of Godhead is internally complete and desires nothing outside of Himself. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that because the Lord already possesses all wealth, knowledge, power, and beauty in full, He has no aspirations and no need to work to improve His condition.
- God has nothing to do. He is self-sufficient. Neither He has got any aspiration.
- We want so many things. But He has no want. He's atma-trpta, fully complete. Thus He has nothing to do. Na tasya karyam karanam ca vidyate. This is description of God. He has nothing to do.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead personally has nothing to do. How is this? He has not to strive for wealth, for all wealth is His; nor for knowledge, for all knowledge is His; nor for power, for all power is His; nor for beauty, fame or renunciation, for they are all His in full.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead, being full in Himself, actually has nothing to want for His self-interest. Lord Vamanadeva, therefore, had not gone to Bali Maharaja for His own self-interest.
Pastimes for the Devotees
If God has no work and no needs, why does He descend into the material world? Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that whenever the Lord appears to act or take birth, He is not working under obligation; He is simply performing transcendental pastimes to please, protect, and satisfy His unalloyed devotees.
- The Lord acts only to satisfy the desires of His devotees; otherwise He has nothing to do.
- The Lord has nothing to do (na tasya karyam karanam ca vidyate); whatever He does is His pastime.
- Due to unalloyed love and devotion for the Lord, the devotees always see Him within themselves, and the Lord also, although He has nothing to do and nothing to aspire to, is always busy in attending to the welfare of His devotees.
- The Lord has nothing to do personally, for everything is done through His different potencies. The Lord has multifarious energies, through which everything is done. Thus when He personally does something, it is only to satisfy His devotee.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Śrīla Prabhupāda definitively establishes the absolute independence and supremacy of the Personality of Godhead. The Vedic statement na tasya kāryaṁ karaṇaṁ ca vidyate—that God has nothing to do—is not a description of an inactive void, but a profound declaration of His perfect self-sufficiency. Unlike a mundane executive who must constantly struggle to maintain control, the Supreme Lord possesses infinite, multifarious energies that systematically manage the creation, maintenance, and dissolution of the cosmos simply by His will. Because He is ātma-tṛpta, fully complete in all opulences, He has no unfulfilled desires, no need for personal gain, and no obligation to act under the laws of material nature. He does not need to perform austerities to become God; He is eternally the Supreme. Yet, in His boundless mercy, this perfectly complete Lord occasionally descends into the material world. When He does so, whether playing as a child in Vṛndāvana or appearing before Bāli Mahārāja, it is never out of necessity. Every action He performs is a purely transcendental pastime, enacted exclusively for the pleasure, welfare, and loving reciprocation of His pure devotees.
