God Has No Beginning - The Original Cause of All Causes
In the material world, every entity, object, and phenomenon is bound by the rigid laws of time, experiencing a clear birth, duration, and eventual destruction. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Supreme Personality of Godhead, however, is entirely free from these limitations. The Absolute Truth is the original source of all creation, yet He Himself has no beginning.
The Original Cause of All Causes
The universe and everything within it are temporary manifestations, but the creator of the universe exists eternally. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that while the cosmic manifestation has a distinct origin, the Supreme Lord is the ultimate, causeless source who initiates all beginnings while remaining unborn and changeless.
- In the Brahma-samhita Lord Brahma offers his respect to the adi-purusa, Govinda, the original person, who has no beginning, whereas the creation of this material world has a beginning.
- The entire cosmic manifestation is the body of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, the Absolute Truth, who has millions of names and unlimited potencies. He is self-effulgent, unborn and changeless. He is the beginning of everything but He has no beginning.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead is described here (in SB 3.26.3). He is not a temporary person, nor does He have a beginning. He is without a cause, and He is the cause of all causes. parah means "transcendental," "beyond the creative energy.
- This Krsna has many expansions (advaitam acyutam anadim). He has no beginning, but He is the beginning of everything. He has expanded Himself in many forms. The visnu-tattva consists of bhagavat-tattva-svamsa, the personal expansions.
The Definition of Govinda
The definitive nature of God is perfectly established in the most authorized Vedic texts. Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently references the Brahma-saṁhitā, which unequivocally defines Lord Kṛṣṇa, Govinda, as the original person whose eternal, blissful form is completely devoid of any origin or conclusion.
- As stated in the Brahma-samhita (5.33): I (Brahma) worship the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Govinda, who is the original person - nondual, infallible, and without beginning. Although He expands into unlimited forms, He is still the original.
- Isvarah paramah krsnah, and then: sac-cid-ananda-vigrahah - and His body is eternal, and full of bliss and knowledge. And next: anadih - He has no beginning, but He is the beginning of everyone.
- That is the definition given in the Brahma-samhita. (5.1) The Supreme Personality of Godhead is Krsna, the supreme controller; He is without beginning, and He is the beginning of everyone. This definition is found in all Vedic literatures.
- He (Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu) is purnah suddho nitya-muktah - complete, completely uncontaminated and eternally liberated. He is sanatana, for He has no beginning or end.
Transcendental to Time and Matter
Because God has no beginning, He is never subjected to the deteriorating effects of material time. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that Kṛṣṇa has no past, present, or future; He exists entirely beyond the material modes of nature as the eternal Supreme Soul.
- One should scientifically understand Krsna. Krsna has no past, present, and future. He is eternal time, with no beginning and no end, and He is equal to everyone. We simply have to prepare ourselves to see Krsna and understand Krsna. That is the purpose of Krsna Consciousness.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead is the Supreme Soul, and He has no beginning. He is transcendental to the material modes of nature and beyond the existence of this material world.
- The gross external body of the Supreme is manifested at certain intervals, and thus the external feature or form of the Supreme Personality of Godhead is not the eternal form of the Lord, which has no beginning, no intermediate stage and no end.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead has no beginning, no end and no middle. Nor does He belong to a particular person or nation. He has no inside or outside.
The Unlimited and Pure Absolute Truth
The capacities of the Supreme Lord are as eternal and boundless as His own existence. Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that the Lord is completely uncontaminated by material tinges, and His unlimited energies flow like a shoreless, fathomless ocean without any beginning or end.
- The Lord is glorified as one without a second and as the supreme truth who has no beginning. Therefore He is called Anantadeva (unlimited). Who can understand Him.
- The Personality of Godhead is pure, being free from all contaminations of material tinges. He is the Absolute Truth and the embodiment of full and perfect knowledge. He is all-pervading, without beginning or end, and without rival.
- The energy of the Lord is like a fathomless ocean that remains undisturbed in all circumstances. It is shoreless, without beginning or end; therefore the process which directly manifests from this energy is omnipotent.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Śrīla Prabhupāda masterfully clarifies the eternal nature of the Absolute Truth, demonstrating that the Supreme Personality of Godhead completely transcends the boundaries of material creation. While everything in the cosmic manifestation—including the universe itself—has a definitive beginning, middle, and end, the Supreme Lord is anādi, without any origin. As confirmed in the Brahma-saṁhitā, Kṛṣṇa is the ādi-puruṣa, the original person, and while He has no beginning, He is undeniably the beginning of everyone and the cause of all causes. Because He is uncreated and changeless, He is never subjected to the deteriorating influence of material time; for Him, there is no past, present, or future. His energies flow like a fathomless, shoreless ocean, and He expands into unlimited forms like Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu while remaining perfectly uncontaminated and self-effulgent. Understanding that God has no beginning is paramount for breaking free from mundane conceptions. By recognizing Kṛṣṇa as the eternal, all-pervading Supreme Soul, the sincere devotee prepares their consciousness to scientifically understand and eternally serve the ultimate source of all existence.
