God Gives Freedom - The Power of Minute Independence
Everyone in the material world is desperately searching for freedom, yet despite all political and social revolutions, the living entities remain bound by the strict laws of nature, old age, disease, and death. Why are we bound, and how can we achieve actual liberty? Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the answer lies in understanding the minute independence granted to us by the Supreme Lord. God gives freedom to every soul, but how we choose to use that freedom dictates whether we experience the limitless joy of the spiritual sky or the heavy chains of the material world.
The Gift of Minute Independence
The Supreme Personality of Godhead is the supreme autocrat, possessing absolute free will. Because we are His minute parts and parcels, we inherently possess a minute quantity of that same free will. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that the Lord never forces us to surrender. Out of His immense kindness, He allows us to choose exactly where and how we wish to live.
- By the grace of God, we have complete freedom. Because the Lord is kind to us, we can live anywhere - either in the spiritual sky or in the material sky, upon whichever planet we desire.
- To approach God, either you become sinless by your own efforts or you simply surrender unto God, and He will help you to become sinless. Whichever you like. He is giving full freedom.
- You have got that minute freedom. That minute freedom, when you misuse for other purposes, then you fall down. But if you use that freedom for the service of the Lord... You have got freedom.
The Misuse of Free Will
When a living entity decides to misuse their freedom to pursue selfish material enjoyment, the Supreme Lord sanctions it, but this choice comes with strict consequences. Śrīla Prabhupāda clearly explains that trying to be independent of God does not make us free; instead, it forces us under the jurisdiction of material nature and the severe laws of karma, obliging us to accept different types of temporary bodies.
- He (God) gives the living entities freedom to act as they like, but on the other hand they must accept a body according to the reactions of their activities. Thus there are different types of bodies.
- Our material calculation is all nonsense. Our material calculation of our activities, they are all nonsense. They are all causes of our bondage. And when the same senses, they are engaged in the service of the Supreme, that is our freedom.
- Under the spell of the material energy, represented by the threefold material qualities, the living entity is so entangled that he is not at all able to become free unless he is graced by the Supreme Lord.
The Path to True Liberation
If misusing our freedom causes bondage, then the correct use of our freedom must bring liberation. Śrīla Prabhupāda reveals the great spiritual paradox: we only attain true freedom when we voluntarily surrender to Kṛṣṇa. As soon as the living entity uses their free will to engage in the loving service of the Lord, the mind and senses are immediately purified of all material designations.
- As soon as one engages himself in the transcendental service of the Lord, he becomes free.
- As soon as there is a reciprocal exchange by the living entity’s free will, at once the great spiritual being attracts the small living entity, thus freeing him from all material bondage.
- One is freed from all material designations, and one's senses are purified simply by being employed in the service of the Lord.
- Taking shelter of devotional service to the Lord in full Krsna consciousness is therefore the only way to become free from the contamination of material, conditioned life, especially in this age.
The Lord's Divine Intervention
Because the conditioned soul is so deeply entangled in the network of material reactions, escaping by personal endeavor alone is virtually impossible. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda guarantees that the moment a soul genuinely surrenders, the Supreme Lord personally intervenes. Kṛṣṇa takes immediate charge, cutting the tight knot of false desires and freeing the devotee from all previous sinful reactions.
- By the grace of God one is allowed to enjoy this material world, but when one is disgusted with material enjoyment and is frustrated, and when one surrenders unto the lotus feet of the Lord, then the Lord is so kind that He frees one from entanglement.
- As stated in the Bhagavad-gita (18.66), the Lord at once takes charge of such a surrendered soul and frees him from all the reactions to his sinful acts.
- By rendering service to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one becomes free from such false desires for happiness. May my (King Satyavrata) supreme spiritual master cut the knot of false desires from the core of my heart.
- The devotee is freed from all material contamination because he constantly thinks of the Lord's pastimes and because his mind and body have been converted to spiritual qualities.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda beautifully clarifies that the supreme state of existence is not the void of impersonalism, nor is it the reckless independence of the materialist. True liberty is found in the loving relationship between the soul and the Supreme Lord. By consciously choosing to act for Kṛṣṇa's satisfaction, the devotee steps out of the prison of material calculation and enters a life of eternal joy, fearless dependence, and unconditioned spiritual freedom.
