God Exists Before Creation - The Eternal Supreme Person
The attempt to understand the origin of the universe often leads mundane thinkers to false conclusions about the nature of God. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Vedic literature clearly establishes that the Supreme Personality of Godhead existed long before the material cosmic manifestation, proving that His form and existence are entirely independent of matter.
The Only Existence Before Creation
Before the universe was manifested, there were no demigods, no planets, and no material elements. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that the Vedas emphatically declare that only the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Vāsudeva or Nārāyaṇa, existed in the beginning, functioning as the ultimate source of everything.
- Before the creation there was none except Vasudeva. There was neither Brahma nor Sankara. Only Narayana was there and no one else, neither Brahma nor Isana.
- In Srimad-Bhagavatam (2.9.33) the Lord also says, aham evasam evagre: "Only I existed before the creation."
- Vasudevo va idam agra asin na brahma na ca sankarah. The meaning of this mantra is that before creation there was no existence of Brahma or Siva, for only Visnu existed. Visnu exists in His abode, the Vaikunthas.
- Before the creation, Krsna was existing, and when there is creation, everything is resting in Krsna, and when this creation is finished, Krsna will remain. Therefore, He is Absolute Truth in all circumstances.
The Eternal Personal Form
It is a grave mistake to think that God was originally a formless energy that later assumed a physical body. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that the Lord existed as a distinct, beautifully dressed person long before Lord Brahmā was even born to witness Him.
- When the creation awaited Brahma's activity, Brahma saw the Lord, and therefore the Lord existed in His personal form before the creation. His eternal form is not created by the attempt of Brahma, as imagined by less intelligent men.
- The form of the Lord, as seen by Brahma, existed before the creation of Brahma, and the material manifestation with all the ingredients and agents of material creation are also energetic expansions of the Lord.
- Before the creation, the Lord existed as a person, as indicated by the word aham. When Prajapati Daksa saw Him as a person, who was beautifully dressed and ornamented, he actually experienced the meaning of this word aham through devotional service.
- Devaki said - You (Lord Visnu) are original because all Your forms as incarnations are outside of this material creation. Your form was existing before this cosmic manifestation was created.
Transcendental Opulence and Associates
The Lord's existence prior to the cosmic manifestation was not a state of dormant inactivity. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that before the material creation, the Supreme Personality of Godhead existed in full opulence within the spiritual sky, surrounded by His eternal associates and transcendental variegatedness.
- Before the creation there was neither cause nor effect, but the Supreme Personality of Godhead existed with His full opulence and energy.
- The Personality of Godhead exists before the creation, and He exists with all transcendental variegatedness in the Vaikunthalokas.
- Before the creation or manifestation of the material cosmic world, the Lord exists as total energy (maha-samasti), and thus desiring Himself to be diffused to many, He expands Himself further into multitotal energy (samasti).
- Before the creation and after its dissolution, only the Supreme Personality of Godhead and His associates exist; there is no existence of the material elements. This is confirmed in the Vedic literature.
The Supreme Master and Absolute Truth
Because the Supreme Lord is the eternal origin of all creation, He is never subjected to its laws of destruction. Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that since God existed before matter was generated, He possesses no material body, and He remains the undisputed master of all that exists.
- We should note very carefully that God is addressing Brahma and specifying with great emphasis Himself, pointing out that it is He, who existed before the creation, it is He only who maintains the creation, and it is He only who remains after the annihilation.
- After the exhibition of the Lord's energy comes to a close, what remains is the same Personality of Godhead. Therefore the form of the Lord exists in all circumstances of creation, maintenance and annihilation.
- It is said that before the creation of the material universe there existed the Lord only, who is master of everyone. That Lord instructed Brahma in Vedic knowledge. That Lord has to be obeyed in all respects.
- Lord Narayana is not born of anything material. Matter is generated from matter, but He is not born of matter. Brahma is born after the creation, but since the Lord existed before the creation, the Lord has no material body.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Śrīla Prabhupāda masterfully dispels any doubt regarding the eternal, transcendental position of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The Vedic literatures overwhelmingly confirm that before the material elements, cause and effect, or even great demigods like Lord Brahmā and Lord Śiva existed, the Supreme Lord was already eternally present. He existed not as a formless, dormant energy, but as the Supreme Person, fully equipped with His unlimited opulence, spiritual energies, and eternal associates in the Vaikuṇṭhalokas. Because the Lord existed long before the manifestation of matter, it is a profound philosophical error to assume that His beautifully dressed and ornamented form is a product of material nature or the imagination of conditioned souls. His body is perfectly spiritual and completely untouched by the laws of material generation and dissolution. The Supreme Lord is the absolute source who diffuses His energy to create the cosmic manifestation, sustains everything within Himself during its existence, and remains perfectly intact and unchanged after its total annihilation. Therefore, recognizing that God exists before creation is fundamental to understanding that He is the supreme, absolute master who must be obeyed and worshiped in all circumstances.
