God Does Not Require - The Supreme Self-Sufficiency of the Lord
The Absolute Truth is entirely complete within Himself, lacking nothing and depending on no one. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is absolutely self-sufficient; He does not require any assistance to maintain His creation, nor does He require the service of the living entities, accepting their devotion only for their own benefit.
Independent in Action and Knowledge
The Supreme Lord is the supreme director, and His energies act automatically under His command. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that although God is the original creator and the ultimate source of all knowledge, He does not require anyone's help to manifest the universe, nor does He need to learn from others or personally perform mundane tasks.
- Bhagavan creates this whole universe, He does not require anyone's help. He creates the sky. From the sky there is sound; from the sound there is air; from the air there is fire; from fire there is water; and from water the earth is there.
- The Absolute is personal, but He is independent. He does not require to personally take a brush and colors to paint the flowers, for His potencies act so wonderfully that it appears as if flowers have come into being without the aid of an artist.
- The next question will be: "Then how Narayana learned the Vedas or knowledge?" Because we have got experience. We receive knowledge from others. So this question may be raised. Therefore it is said, saksat svayambhuh. He does not require.
- Killing business can be done without the presence of Krsna. Because there are so many natural forces - war, pestilence, famine, anything - just set on working. Millions of people can be killed. So Krsna does not require to come here to kill these rascals.
Self-Sufficient in Existence
Because the Lord is completely spiritual, He is not bound by the limitations that afflict the conditioned souls. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that because the Lord possesses an eternal form of bliss and knowledge, He does not require a material body, and because He is completely satisfied, He does not require anything to fulfill His desires.
- He (God) is described there as sac-cid-ananda-vigraha, which means that He is the eternal form fully representing transcendental existence, knowledge and bliss. As such, He does not require a separate body or mind, as we do in material existence.
- The Lord is known as apta-kama, or one who can fulfill His desires by Himself. He does not require anyone's help to satisfy His desires.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead does not, however, require to be under disciplinary action to become leader, as we see in the activities of Lord Krsna.
- We are living entities, and the Lord is also a living entity. And we are originally created to help the Lord. He does not require . . . because He's complete.
Not Requiring Opulence or Service
The grandeur of the Supreme Lord is so vast that He does not depend on the worship of anyone, not even the most exalted demigods. The Vedic literature confirms that God is already fully satisfied by His own internal potencies and does not require the service of any living entity or goddess of fortune.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead does not require any service. He is already satisfied by His own opulence.
- The Lord does not require our cooperation. He is full in Himself. He does not require my service, but still, if you love Him, then He reciprocates.
- Laksmi, the goddess of fortune, is worshiped by all materialistic men, including big kings, and demigods in heaven. Laksmi, however, is always after the Supreme Personality of Godhead, even though He does not require her service.
- Brahma samhita says that God is worshiped by 100's and thousands of goddesses of fortune, but God does not require service from any of them because if He so desires He can produce millions of goddesses of fortune through His spiritual energy, the pleasure potency.
Accepting Offerings for Our Benefit
When the Lord commands His devotees to offer Him food, wealth, and opulent temples, it is not due to any lack on His part. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that God does not require our money or food; He accepts these offerings purely out of causeless mercy to help the living entities purify their existence.
- The Lord is never hungry, nor does He require any food to fill His empty stomach. He is complete in Himself. Yet He always mercifully eats the foods offered by His devotees in sincere affection.
- God is not want of your money. (chuckles) He is quite competent to earn money. He doesn't require anything. But if we give, it is our interest. It is our interest.
- We may construct a gorgeous temple and spend thousands of dollars, but such a temple is not required by the Lord. The Lord has many millions of temples for His residence and He does not need our attempt.
- He (God) does not require opulent activity at all. Such engagement is meant for our benefit.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Śrīla Prabhupāda masterfully demonstrates that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the epitome of absolute independence and self-sufficiency. As the creator, He does not require anyone's assistance to construct the universe, nor does He need to personally manage the intricate laws of nature or annihilate the demons, for His unlimited potencies execute His will automatically. Because He is eternally situated in a transcendental form of bliss and knowledge, He does not require a material body, nor does He need to acquire education from any mundane source. The Lord is completely satisfied within Himself (āpta-kāma). Consequently, He does not require the service of the infinitesimal living entities, nor does He even require the constant, devoted service of the goddess of fortune. When the Supreme Lord asks His devotees to build gorgeous temples, offer opulent food, or sacrifice their wealth, it is not because He is hungry or poor. He does not require these things at all. Rather, the Lord mercifully accepts such service solely to purify the conditioned souls, allowing them to revive their dormant love for Him and ultimately return to their eternal, blissful position in the spiritual world.
