God's Sound Representation - The Absolute Nature of Transcendental Vibration
Because our current physical senses are heavily conditioned by material elements, we cannot directly perceive the Supreme Personality of Godhead. However, the Absolute Truth is not restricted by our limitations. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that out of His boundless mercy, the Lord descends into this material world in a form that we can easily perceive and interact with: transcendental vibration. By understanding the absolute nature of God's sound representation, a sincere soul can instantly associate with the Supreme.
The Absolute Nature of Spiritual Sound
In the material realm, a symbol or a sound is separate from the object it represents. If you are thirsty, simply chanting the word "water" will not help you. But the spiritual realm is absolute. Śrīla Prabhupāda teaches that the Supreme Lord and His sound representation are entirely non-different. When a devotee vibrates the Lord's name, Kṛṣṇa is immediately present.
- Considering the fallen age at the present moment, God is so merciful and kind that He presents Himself as sound, sound vibration, which everyone can produce by his tongue and can hear, and God is present there.
- The sound representation of the Lord is nondifferent from the Lord Himself because the Lord and His representation in sound are absolute knowledge.
- The sound representation or name of the Supreme Lord is as good as the Supreme Lord Himself.
- Lord Caitanya has instructed us that in the holy name of the Lord, as sound representation of the Lord, all the potencies of the Lord are invested.
Omkara and the Supreme Vibration
The original sound vibration of the Vedic literature is oṁkāra (praṇava). Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that this sacred syllable is the direct sound representation of the Supreme Lord. While impersonal philosophers often try to elevate secondary phrases like tat tvam asi (you are that) to the highest status, true Vedic authorities recognize that oṁkāra is the supreme, original vibration that brings the material manifestation into being.
- Omkara (pranava) is the symbolic sound representation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Om tat sad iti nirdeso brahmanas tri-vidhah smrtah: the three words om tat sat immediately invoke the Supreme Person. Therefore Krsna says that He is omkara in all the Vedic mantras.
- Omkara is the representation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead in sound. This form of His holy name is accepted as the transcendental vibration (maha-vakya) by virtue of which the temporary material manifestation has come into being.
- The principal word in the Vedas, pranava omkara, is the sound representation of the Supreme Lord. Therefore omkara should be considered the supreme sound. However, Sankaracarya has falsely preached that tat tvam asi are the supreme vibrations.
- Tat tvam asi means that the living entity is a spiritual particle of the supreme spirit, but this is not the chief motif of the Vedanta or Vedic literatures. The chief sound representation of the Supreme is omkara.
The Literary Incarnations of Kṛṣṇa
The Supreme Lord also appears in the form of transcendental literature. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that the Bhagavad-gītā and the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam are not ordinary books written by mundane scholars; they are the direct sound incarnations of Kṛṣṇa. By reading and hearing these sacred texts, we receive the exact same spiritual benefit as if we were sitting directly in front of the Lord.
- By placing Arjuna and the Pandavas in frustration due to the intrigue of their cousin-brothers, the prelude of the Battle of Kuruksetra was created by the Lord. This was to incarnate the sound representative of the Lord, Bhagavad-gita.
- The Bhagavad-gita is the sound representation of the Lord, and there is no difference in identity. The conclusion is that the Lord can be seen and heard by persistent chanting of the transcendental sound.
- This inquiry was made: Where can you get spiritual knowledge, now that Krsna is gone? The answer was that Krsna, having departed, has left us the Srimad-Bhagavatam. It is the representation, the sound representation, of Krsna.
- Srimad-Bhagavatam means consciousness of the Supreme Personality of Godhead Lord Sri Krsna, and Srimad-Bhagavatam is the sound representation of the Lord as much as the Bhagavad-gita is.
The Perfection of Chanting the Holy Name
Because our material eyes cannot see the spiritual form of the Lord, the authorized method of worship in this age is through the ear and the tongue. Śrīla Prabhupāda assures us that there is no difference between the original oṁkāra and the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra. By constantly vibrating these holy names, a sincere practitioner instantly attains the ultimate perfection of spiritual realization.
- Our present senses are all made of material elements, and therefore they are imperfect in realizing the transcendental form of Lord Visnu. He is therefore worshiped by sound representation via the transcendental method of chanting.
- One can immediately enjoy the association of the Lord by the pure vibration of the sound representation of His holy name, and the concept of the Lord is immediately manifested before the pure devotee.
- There is no difference between the Hare Krsna maha-mantra and omkara because both of them are sound representations of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. pranavah sarva-vedesu.
- Sri Narada has explained all these from his personal experience, and one can obtain all the facilities which Sri Narada obtained by perfecting the chanting process of the sound representation of the Lord.
Conclusion
Śrīla Prabhupāda brilliantly demystifies the process of God realization. We do not need to embark on physically impossible ascetic endeavors or rely on our flawed material senses to find the Absolute Truth. Kṛṣṇa has made Himself completely available as His sound representation. By submissively hearing the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam and chanting the holy names, we are already in the direct, personal presence of the Supreme Lord.
