God's Instructions Are the Ultimate Guide for Humanity
Human society is constantly seeking guidance on how to live peacefully, how to govern, and how to find happiness. However, because human beings are conditioned by four fundamental defects—the tendency to commit mistakes, the illusion of false identification, the propensity to cheat, and imperfect senses—any instruction manufactured by a mundane philosopher or politician is ultimately flawed. The Vedic literatures declare that the only perfect, infallible instructions come directly from the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Śrīla Prabhupāda heavily emphasizes that we do not need to invent a new philosophy of life; we simply need to hear, understand, and apply the eternal instructions already provided by the Lord. By understanding the absolute nature of God's teachings, how He guides us from both within and without, the specific instructions left by His various incarnations, and our duty to distribute this knowledge, we can solve all the problems of material existence and return to our original, spiritual home.
The Infallible Perfection of His Words
The words of the Supreme Lord are not subject to debate, revision, or historical irrelevance. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that because the Lord is complete in all six opulences, including absolute knowledge, His instructions are eternally perfect and free from all human defects.
- A God conscious person is getting direct instruction from God. How it can be defective? It cannot be. Practical. But if one is defective, he's not yet fully God conscious.
- God is eternal, and His instruction is also eternal. And the followers are also eternal. There is nothing new.
- You cannot question the statement or instruction of Bhagavan. Bhaga means opulence. There are six kinds of opulences. Bhagavan means one who is full with six kinds of opulences.
- Here it is, the bhagavan word is, used; therefore I give you a little definition of bhagavan. So bhagavan uvaca. Now, because He is complete in knowledge, therefore His instruction is valuable.
The Bhagavad-gītā as the Ultimate Summary
Although the Vedic literatures are vast and complex, the Supreme Lord Himself kindly summarized their essence. Śrīla Prabhupāda repeatedly points to the Bhagavad-gītā as the ultimate manual for human life, representing the direct, personal instructions of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Śrī Kṛṣṇa.
- One may conclude that from the Bhagavad-gita alone one can have the essence of the Vedas, for it is spoken by Krsna, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who descends upon this material world from the antimaterial world in order to give complete information of the superior form of energy.
- God comes to this world in person, He leaves behind His instructions like those of Bhagavad-gita, and He leaves behind His devotees who can explain who God is, but still we are so stubborn that we do not accept God. This is foolishness.
- The summary of Vedic knowledge is here in the Bhagavad-gita, because here God directly is instructing about Himself. Therefore it is the essence of all Vedic knowledge.
- The Lord left behind Him the instructions of the Bhagavad-gita not for the benefit of Arjuna alone, but also for all time and in all lands. The Bhagavad-gita, being spoken by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is the essence of all Vedic wisdom.
The Inner Guide: The Supersoul
We do not have to look far to receive God's guidance; He is sitting right within our own hearts. Śrīla Prabhupāda beautifully describes how the Lord acts as the Paramātmā (Supersoul), providing direct, internal instructions to His sincere devotees to help them navigate the material world safely.
- God is situated as the Supersoul in everyone's heart, but He is so kind to His devotees that He gives them instructions by which they may continue to progress. When they receive instructions from the all-perfect, there is no chance of their being misled.
- Isvara, the Supreme Lord, is situated in everyone's heart. Therefore it is said hrda. Sometimes we get education, instruction from hrda. That hrda, Krsna, sitting in everyone's heart, instructs everyone.
- The Supersoul gives instructions to the sincere, unalloyed devotee on how he can progress more and more in approaching the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
- By the grace of the Lord, who instructed him through the heart, Lord Brahma could create a huge universe. Those who are actually pure devotees of the Lord are instructed by the Lord through the heart, where the Lord is always situated.
The External Guide: The Spiritual Master
Because our hearts are often clouded by material desires, we cannot always hear the Supersoul clearly. Therefore, the Lord also instructs us externally. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that the bona fide spiritual master is the external representative of God, whose sole qualification is that he strictly repeats the Lord's instructions without deviation.
- The spiritual master is the manifested representation of the Supreme Lord because he receives and presents the instructions of the Lord, as they are, by disciplic succession.
- A bona fide spiritual master is in the disciplic succession from time eternal, and he does not deviate at all from the instructions of the Supreme Lord as they were imparted millions of years ago.
- Test for bona fide spiritual masters is that there should be no difference between the instruction of the Lord originally imparted to His devotee and that which is imparted by the authority in the line of disciplic succession.
- The instruction of Krsna is perfect, and the teacher or guru who speaks the same thing as Krsna says, that is perfect. And if he manufactures his own ideas and becomes more than Krsna, then he's a rascal number one. There is no benefit.
The Path to Absolute Liberation
Following the Lord's instructions is not merely about living a moral or pious life on earth; it is the exact science of achieving eternal freedom. Śrīla Prabhupāda assures us that if we simply adopt the instructions given by the Lord, we will be successfully guided all the way back to the spiritual world.
- Simply by understanding Krsna and His instructions, after giving up this body one can return home, back to Godhead. Even if there is some falldown, practice of Krsna consciousness never goes in vain.
- One can fulfill the ultimate goal of life only by engaging in devotional service to the Lord. Then the Lord will give one proper instructions on how to go back home, back to Godhead.
- If one is intelligent enough to take instructions from the Supreme Personality of Godhead, as enunciated in Bhagavad-gita or the Sankhya philosophy of Kapiladeva, one can very soon attain liberation and be situated in his original position of spiritual life.
- The Lord says, dadami buddhi-yogam tam yena mam upayanti te. In other words, the Lord can give instructions on devotional service by which one can return home, back to Godhead.
The Folly of Rejecting His Guidance
Despite the availability of perfect knowledge, the conditioned soul stubbornly prefers its own plans. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out the tragedy of material existence: God is constantly trying to liberate us, but out of false pride, we neglect His instructions and continue to suffer.
- If anyone is intelligent, he takes God's direct instruction and he becomes happy. Otherwise, go on making plan. He'll give you facility. That is God's kindness.
- If one does not care to listen to His (Krsna's) instructions, the result will be that one will never go back to Godhead, but will continue life in this miserable condition of repeated birth and death in material existence.
- God is liberated, and He tries to make us liberated, but although He is constantly trying, we refuse to accept His instructions.
- Unfortunately the living entity neglects the Supreme Person's instructions.
The Divine Teachings of the Incarnations
Throughout history, the Supreme Lord has incarnated in various forms specifically to instruct human society on how to achieve perfection. Śrīla Prabhupāda frequently references the profound instructions delivered by Lord Kapila to His mother, Devahūti, and by Lord Ṛṣabhadeva to His one hundred sons.
- For the propagation of this transcendental knowledge, Kapiladeva, the incarnation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, gave instructions in Sankhya philosophy to His mother, Devahuti.
- His Lordship Kapila, the incarnation of the Lord, instructed His mother fully about the personal form of the Lord, and thereby she realized the personal form of the Lord and was able to achieve a place in the Vaikunthaloka where, Lord Kapila predominates.
- The teachings of Lord Rsabhadeva are for the people of all yugas-Satya-yuga, Treta-yuga, Dvapara-yuga and especially Kali-yuga. These instructions are so powerful that even in this age of Kali one can attain perfection simply by explaining the instructions.
- The instructions of Lord Rsabhadeva to His sons are very valuable if one wants to live peacefully within this world, which is full of miseries.
The Duty to Preach His Instructions
Once a person receives and understands the instructions of the Lord, they have a responsibility to share them. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement is built on the order of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu: to become a spiritual master simply by repeating what Śrī Kṛṣṇa has instructed, without adding any mental concoctions.
- Caitanya Mahaprabhu wanted everyone, at least in India, to become a preacher of this mission. In other words, one should become a guru and preach the Lord's instructions all over the world for the peace and prosperity of humanity.
- I know you are all intelligent devotees of the Lord and I feel confidence in you that you can all illustrate the philosophical instructions of the Lord and this will be a great boon to the people at large.
- How I become a guru? - Yare dekha tare kaha krsna upadesa: "Very simple thing. You instruct only what is instructed by Krsna. That's all." Don't invent. Don't become overintelligent. Remain a poor fool.
- In this age of Kali, however, the great sacrifice is the performance of sankirtana-yajna. Our Krsna consciousness movement is designed to teach people (and to learn ourselves) the exact instruction of the Personality of Godhead.
Conclusion
A systematic study of the Vedic literatures completely frees the spiritual seeker from the endless, confusing debates of mundane philosophy. As Śrīla Prabhupāda masterfully teaches, we do not have to guess how to achieve the perfection of life, because the Supreme Personality of Godhead has already provided the exact formula. Because God is absolute, His instructions are eternally perfect and completely free from the defects of human speculation. In the modern age, the essence of all these perfect instructions is readily available in the Bhagavad-gītā, spoken directly by Śrī Kṛṣṇa. To ensure that these teachings are never lost or misunderstood, the Lord actively guides the conditioned soul from two directions. Internally, He sits in the heart as the Paramātmā (Supersoul), providing divine intelligence to the sincere devotee. Externally, He manifests as the bona fide spiritual master, whose sole duty is to transparently repeat the Lord's instructions through the disciplic succession. Throughout history, the Lord has also descended in various incarnations—such as Lord Kapila and Lord Ṛṣabhadeva—specifically to instruct humanity in the science of self-realization and detachment. Despite this incredible mercy, the tragedy of the material world is that the foolish conditioned souls continuously reject God's instructions, preferring to rely on their own flawed plans, which inevitably lead to repeated suffering and death. True intelligence means abandoning this false independence and fully surrendering to the Lord's guidance. When one does so, they not only achieve their own liberation but become empowered to act as a genuine guru, fulfilling the desire of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu by purely preaching the eternal instructions of the Supreme Lord to a suffering world.
