God's Indications - Guiding the Universe and the Devotees
When we think of a supreme controller, we often imagine someone issuing loud, direct commands to keep everything in order. However, the Supreme Personality of Godhead is so absolute and His energies are so perfectly aligned with His will that He rarely needs to shout. The Vedic literatures reveal that the Lord perfectly manages the entire cosmic manifestation, guides His pure devotees, and conducts His intimate pastimes simply through His divine indications. Śrīla Prabhupāda meticulously explains how the material nature moves on the Lord's slightest gesture, how a sincere disciple learns to read the indications of the spiritual master and the Lord, and how the scriptures provide specific indications to help us identify genuine incarnations. By learning to recognize and follow God's indications, a conditioned soul can safely navigate the material world and return back home, back to Godhead.
Directing the Cosmic Manifestation
The material nature, though appearing to act independently, is completely under the control of the Supreme Lord. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the complex workings of the universe and the actions of the demigods are all seamlessly executed simply by the indications of the Absolute Truth.
- The energies are acting by combination and permutation by the indication of the Lord, and the acting agents, like Brahma, Visnu and Siva, are also different incarnations of the Lord.
- Maya does not wait the order of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. She can understand what the Lord wants. Simply little indication, she can kill hundreds and thousands of demons in one stroke.
- We can simply understand that behind the activities of material nature is the Supreme Lord, by whose indications everything takes place, although we cannot see Him. Even without seeing Him, we should offer Him our respectful obeisances.
- In Bhagavad-gita the Lord indicates that all things abide in Him in both their beginning and in their end and also in the interim state.
Guiding the Pure Devotees
A pure devotee never acts whimsically. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights that highly elevated souls like Lord Brahmā and Arjuna do not wait for a thunderous voice from the sky; they are so perfectly attuned to the Lord that they can understand and carry out His desires simply by observing His subtle indications.
- Devotees like Brahma and Arjuna do not do anything on their own account, but as fully surrendered souls they always await indications from the Lord; therefore they attempt to do something which appears very wonderful to ordinary vision.
- The orders of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu must be carefully carried out. Although the Lord may not give direct orders, you are still to carry out His desires simply by understanding His indications.
- We should have firm faith that the Lord is supreme and that if we surrender to Him, He will take charge of us and indicate how we can get out of material life and return home, back to Godhead.
- The Lord assured Uddhava that He would fulfill his desire. It appears that when the Lord informed him by His indication to Uddhava, the great sage Maitreya finally became aware of the importance of entering into the association of the Lord.
Identifying the Genuine Incarnation
In the age of Kali, many unscrupulous people claim to be incarnations of God. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphatically warns against accepting these pretenders, explaining that the Vedas give specific, unmistakable indications—such as the ability to show the virāṭ-rūpa (universal form)—to prove an incarnation's authenticity.
- All these activities are His marginal characteristics. Great saintly persons understand the incarnations of the Supreme Personality of Godhead by the indications of the two characteristics known as svarupa and tatastha.
- These are special indications of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The Lord's personal attendants and other devotees in Vaikuntha have the same features, except for the Srivatsa mark and the Kaustubha gem.
- For them (the general mass of people) the indication is that one should ask the cheap incarnation to exhibit his virat-rupa and thus be established as an incarnation.
- Prthu Maharaja indicated that prayers should not be offered to an unfit person who pretends to be an incarnation of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
Indirect Instructions in Divine Pastimes
The Supreme Lord is the master of communication. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that during His various pastimes, the Lord often uses indirect indications to teach lessons, chastise offenders, or share confidential exchanges with His devotees that ordinary people cannot decipher.
- Lord Vamanadeva indirectly indicated to Bali Maharaja that he was occupying more land than he needed.
- Indirectly, He (Lord Visnu) indicated that He was not satisfied with Daksa's trying to deny Lord Siva his share.
- Yudhisthira could understand the feelings of Duryodhana and he tried to restrain the queens, but Krsna indicated that Yudhisthira should not restrain them from enjoying the incident. Krsna desired that Duryodhana be fooled in that way.
- In this way the Kazi and the Lord talked with each other with various indications, but no outsider could understand the inner meaning of their conversation.
Conclusion
A systematic study of the Vedic literatures trains the conditioned soul to perceive the subtle, omnipotent presence of the Supreme Lord. As Śrīla Prabhupāda masterfully explains, the Lord is not a distant, inactive force; He is actively managing the entire universe through His infallible indications. The material energy (māyā) is so devoted to Him that she does not even require a spoken command; upon His mere indication, she orchestrates the complex permutations of nature and can vanquish millions of demons in an instant. For the aspiring transcendentalist, learning to read these indications is the essence of spiritual life. Pure devotees like Arjuna do not act independently; they completely surrender their own desires and meticulously observe the Lord's indications to fulfill His supreme will. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that even today, we must strive to carry out the desires of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu by deeply understanding the indications left in His teachings. Furthermore, the Vedic scriptures protect innocent seekers from being cheated by providing strict indications—such as unique bodily features and specific extraordinary acts—to verify the true identity of genuine incarnations. In His earthly pastimes, whether negotiating with Bali Mahārāja or having a confidential dialogue with the Chand Kazi, the Lord constantly utilizes indirect indications to instruct, correct, and delight His associates. Ultimately, by developing firm faith and surrendering to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, anyone can receive His divine indications from within the heart, guiding them safely out of material entanglement and back home, back to Godhead.
