God's Home - The Heart of the Pure Devotee
In the material world, the concept of home is often tied to physical structures, property deeds, and the temporary comforts of family life. However, because everything material is subject to destruction, the peace found in a mundane home is always fleeting. The Vedic literatures reveal a much higher, eternal reality regarding the home of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. God is the proprietor of all universes, yet He chooses to reside in places governed purely by unalloyed love. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the ultimate home of the Lord is actually the heart of His pure devotee. Furthermore, when the Lord descends into the material world, His pastimes of leaving home, returning home, and interacting with His family members are full of profound lessons and unmatched sweetness. By understanding the transcendental nature of God's home, we can learn how to invite Him into our own lives and experience the supreme shelter of the Absolute Truth.
The Devotee's Heart as the Lord's Home
The Supreme Lord is entirely independent and self-sufficient, but He is conquered by pure love. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that when a devotee completely gives up all personal motives and dedicates their household and life to the Lord, the Lord happily makes that devotee's heart His permanent home.
- A pure devotee does not think in terms of his personal gain or loss because he is fully surrendered to the Lord. He is concerned only with the service of the Lord and always engages in that service, and for this reason his heart is the Lord's home.
- In this way all the opulences of Advaita Acarya - His faith, devotion, home, riches and everything else - were successfully utilized in the worship of Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
- This is the very easiest method. Chant Hare Krsna maha-mantra. Sit down as much time as you can devote. The Lord is at your home. It is a great fortune. So do this, both, all family together.
Leaving Home to Teach the World
Although the Lord enjoys immense happiness in His transcendental home, He sometimes accepts great inconveniences to set the perfect example for human society. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights how incarnations like Lord Rāmacandra, Lord Caitanya, and Lord Kapila voluntarily left their homes to teach duty, detachment, and spiritual realization.
- Lord Ramacandra was ordered by His father, Maharaja Dasaratha, to leave home for the forest under awkward circumstances, and the Lord, as the ideal son of His father, carried out the order, even on the occasion of His being declared the King of Ayodhya.
- For the benefit of the whole world, although He (Caitanya) is Krsna, He showed us the example. At the age of twenty-four years, He took sannyasa. He was not unhappy in His home.
- Apparently He (Lord Kapila) left home for spiritual realization, although He had nothing to realize spiritually because He Himself is the person to be spiritually realized.
The Sweetness of Returning Home
In His original, most intimate pastimes in Vṛndāvana, the Supreme Creator plays the role of a dependent child. Śrīla Prabhupāda paints a beautiful picture of Mother Yaśodā scolding the Lord, bathing Him, and experiencing pure, parental ecstasy as she brings Him back to their home.
- Mother Yasoda told Krsna, "My dear Krsna, do You think that You are a street boy? You have no home? Please come back to Your home! I see that Your body has become very dirty from playing since early morning. Now come home and take Your bath."
- She (mother Yasoda) took Krsna by the hand, along with Balarama, and brought Them home, where she performed her duties by fully bathing Them, dressing Them and feeding Them.
- When You (Krsna) return home, the milk flowing out of the breasts of Your mother washes Your face of its dust covering, and it appears that You are purified by this milk.
The Anguish of Separation
The relationship between the Lord and His associates is so deep that His mere absence causes them profound distress. Śrīla Prabhupāda notes that when the Lord or His expansions are delayed in returning home, the pure devotees display symptoms of severe physical and emotional affliction.
- When Sri Krsna left the city of Dvaraka to seek out the Syamantaka jewel, He was late returning home. Uddhava became so afflicted that the symptoms of disease became manifest on his body.
- When the four months of the rainy season passed and Aniruddha had still not returned home, all the members of the Yadu family became much perturbed. They could not understand how the boy was missing.
- The most brilliant part of His supreme character was that He (Krsna) begged pardon from His parents for being unable to serve their feet while absent from home because of fear of Kamsa.
Conclusion
A systematic study of the Vedic literatures completely elevates our understanding of domestic life. As Śrīla Prabhupāda masterfully explains, the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the source of all shelter, and His true home is not built with bricks and mortar, but with the unalloyed devotion of His surrendered servants. Because a pure devotee has no desire for personal gain and engages constantly in loving service, their heart becomes the eternal, joyful residence of the Lord. Yet, when the Lord descends into the material world, His interactions with His physical home provide the ultimate teachings for humanity. As Lord Rāmacandra, He proves Himself the ideal son by abandoning His royal home without hesitation to honor His father's word. As Lord Caitanya, He leaves a happy household to accept the renounced order (sannyāsa), sacrificing His personal comfort to rescue the fallen souls of the world. In His most confidential pastimes in Vṛndāvana, the Supreme Creator exhibits absolute sweetness by allowing Mother Yaśodā to drag Him home from play, covered in dust, to be lovingly bathed and fed. The affection in the Lord's home is so intense that whenever He is delayed in returning, great devotees like Uddhava become physically afflicted by the agony of separation. Ultimately, Śrīla Prabhupāda reminds us that we do not need to wait for the next life to enter God's home. By coming together with our families to chant the Hare Kṛṣṇa mahā-mantra, we can instantly transform our mundane residences into the supreme sanctuary of the Absolute Truth.
