God's Fulfilling Mercy Satisfies the Desires of Everyone
In the material world, every living entity is constantly driven by a multitude of desires. From the tiny ant seeking a grain of sugar to the ambitious politician seeking global power, everyone is working tirelessly to fulfill their inner ambitions. Yet, very few people stop to ask: who actually provides the facilities for these desires to be fulfilled? The Vedic literatures reveal that the living entity only has the power to desire; the actual fulfillment of that desire rests entirely in the hands of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Śrīla Prabhupāda extensively explains this profound dynamic, detailing how the Lord acts as the supreme provider for the entire cosmos, the difference between how He fulfills the desires of materialists versus His devotees, and how He flawlessly executes His own transcendental promises. By understanding the absolute nature of God's fulfilling mercy, we can redirect our ambitions away from temporary illusions and toward eternal satisfaction.
The Universal Provider
The maintenance of the entire cosmic manifestation requires an incomprehensible amount of energy and management. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that only the Supreme Personality of Godhead has the capacity to witness, process, and fulfill the infinite demands of the countless living entities scattered throughout the universe.
- The Lord can fulfill all desires, and the Lord, being neutral to everyone, does not interfere with the desires of the minute independent living entities.
- The Paramatma, or Supersoul, the guide of the individual living beings, does not take part in fulfilling the desires of the living beings, but He arranges for their fulfillment by material nature.
- No one can maintain the whole creation but He. There are innumerable entities, and they have innumerable demands; no one but Visnu can fulfill the innumerable demands of all the innumerable living entities.
- The lower and higher positions of different living entities are due to their desires, for the Lord, being equal to all, fulfills everyone's desires.
Man Proposes, God Disposes
A common illusion among conditioned souls is the belief that their hard work alone brings them success. Śrīla Prabhupāda shatters this misconception by explaining the ancient adage "Man proposes, God disposes." We have the independence to wish for something, but the Lord must sanction and arrange its fulfillment.
- Everyone is at liberty to desire as he likes, but the desire is fulfilled by the Supreme Lord. Everyone is independent to think or desire but the fulfillment of one's desire depends on the supreme will. This law is expressed as "Man proposes God disposes."
- It is said, "Man proposes, God disposes." Thus a person may desire many things, but unless these desires are fulfilled by the Supreme Personality of Godhead, they cannot be fulfilled.
- Man proposes; God disposes. God is very kind. Whatever you desire, He will fulfill. Although He says that "This kind of material desires will never satisfy you," but we want. Therefore God supplies us, Krsna, different types of body.
- The Supreme Lord is situated in everyone's heart, O Arjuna, and is directing the wanderings of all living entities, who are seated as on a machine, made of the material energy. The Lord gives everyone an opportunity to fulfill his ambitions.
The Source of All Benedictions
When people require material benefits, they often approach powerful men or demigods. Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that this is a symptom of poor intelligence, because the demigods are simply agents of the Supreme Lord. True intelligence means approaching the Supreme Lord directly for the fulfillment of all needs.
- Even if one wants something material, he should pray to no one but the Lord to fulfill his desire. If one approaches a demigod for the fulfillment of his desires, he is to be considered nasta-buddhi, bereft of all good sense.
- The Lord enters the hearts of all living entities as the Supersoul and He gives them intelligence and fulfills their material desires. This is also confirmed in Bhagavad-gita. Sarvasya caham hrdi sannivistah. "I am sitting in everyone's heart."
- The Lord, situated within everyone's heart, fulfills the desires of the demigod-worshipers - but in the Bhagavad-gita the Lord says that such demigod-worshipers are of small intelligence - alpa-medhasah.
- You may be in need of food, I may be in need of some woman, he may be in need of some money . . . in this way everyone is needy. Therefore, ultimately one should search after God, when every need will be fulfilled.
The Special Mercy Upon Devotees
The Lord is neutral to the materialists, giving them whatever they want, but He takes a deeply personal interest in the lives of His devotees. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that the Lord expertly manages a devotee's desires, sometimes completely denying a material request as a special favor to protect their spiritual life.
- Lord Visnu fulfills the desires of the karmis as they desire, but the Lord fulfills the desire of a devotee in a different way so that the devotee may gradually come to Him. This is confirmed in the Bhagavad-gita.
- The Lord is so merciful that not only does He fulfill the desires of a devotee who is driven by ignorance and desires for material benefit, but He also gives such a devotee all protection, just as a cow gives milk to a newly born calf.
- Of course, sometimes if a devotee is very sincere, the Lord, as a special favor to him, refuses to fulfill his material desires and directly blesses him with pure, unalloyed devotional service.
- Generally the Lord does not fulfill anyone's material desires for sense enjoyment, but He awards such benedictions to worshipers of the Lord, for they ultimately come to the point of not desiring material enjoyment.
The Pure Devotee's Desireless State
When a soul achieves the highest platform of pure devotional service, they no longer ask God for anything. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights the beautiful paradox of bhakti: the pure devotee demands nothing to be fulfilled, yet the Supreme Lord eagerly and automatically fulfills all their spiritual and material necessities.
- Pure devotional service in Krsna consciousness is one because in pure devotional service there is no demand from the devotee to be fulfilled by the Lord. But generally people take to devotional service with a purpose.
- The pure devotees do not wish any return from the Lord in exchange for their service; they do not make business exchanges with the Lord. But the Lord, out of His own accord, fulfills all the desires of the devotees.
- The Lord fulfills the desires of everyone just as one desires. Pure devotees are interested in achieving the transcendental service of the Lord, which is nondifferent from Him.
- The actual devotee does not desire even liberation, anyabhilasita-sunyam. The Lord, however, fulfills the desire of the devotee by awarding him opulence that will never be destroyed.
Fulfilling His Own Divine Promises
While the Lord fulfills the desires of the living entities, He is completely self-satisfied (āpta-kāma) and requires nothing for Himself. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that when the Lord descends to the material world, He does so simply to fulfill His own transcendental promises and to relish His divine pastimes.
- Avatara means "one who descends." All the incarnations of the Lord, including the Lord Himself, descend on the different planets of the material world as also in different species of life to fulfill particular missions.
- As stated in the Bhagavad-gita, Krsna descends upon this material world just to protect the pious and destroy the impious. That is His vow. The demigods could understand that the Lord had taken His residence within the womb of Devaki to fulfill this vow.
- The Lord can fulfill many purposes through one action. Thus the killing of Hiranyakasipu and the saving of Prahlada were enacted simultaneously to prove the truthfulness of the Lord's devotee and the fidelity of the Lord Himself to His own purpose.
- The Lord is known as apta-kama, or one who can fulfill His desires by Himself. He does not require anyone's help to satisfy His desires.
Conclusion
A systematic study of the Vedic literatures completely dismantles the arrogant illusion of human independence. As Śrīla Prabhupāda clearly explains, the living entity is not the master of their own destiny. We are endowed with minute independence, which grants us the ability to desire, but the fulfillment of those desires rests exclusively on the sanction of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Operating as the Paramātmā (Supersoul) within the heart, the Lord impartially witnesses our desires, supplies the necessary intelligence, and directs the material nature to fulfill them. This absolute dynamic is perfectly captured in the proverb: "Man proposes, God disposes." Less intelligent persons fail to understand this and seek the fulfillment of their material desires by approaching demigods, ignoring the fact that the demigods themselves are entirely dependent on the Supreme Lord's sanction. The Lord, however, deals with His devotees in a remarkably different manner. When a devotee approaches the Lord with material motives, the Lord mercifully guides them, fulfilling their desires in a way that eventually eliminates their taste for material enjoyment. If a devotee desires something spiritually harmful, the Lord, like a loving father, will simply refuse to fulfill it, granting them pure devotional service instead. On the highest platform, a pure devotee is completely free from material ambitions (anyābhilāṣitā-śūnyam). They demand absolutely nothing from God. Yet, because the Lord is so affectionate, He eagerly and automatically fulfills all their needs. Ultimately, the Supreme Lord Himself is āpta-kāma—He is perfectly self-sufficient. When He descends into the material world, He is not driven by unfulfilled material needs; He comes solely to fulfill His own transcendental promises, to protect His beloved devotees, and to relish the blissful exchange of supreme, unalloyed love.
