God's Followers - The Eternal Servants of the Supreme Lord
In the material world, everyone desires to be a master, a leader, or a controller. The struggle for supremacy creates endless anxiety, competition, and suffering. However, the Vedic literatures reveal that the constitutional position of every living entity is not to be a master, but to be a joyful follower of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains that when a conditioned soul gives up the false ego of being an independent controller and voluntarily becomes a follower of the Lord, they immediately experience true liberation. This eternal relationship is the basis of the spiritual world and the core of all authentic religious principles. By exploring the eternal nature of God's followers, the glories of the Lord's intimate associates, the necessity of preaching His mission, and the Lord's compassion for even the most uneducated populations, we can fully appreciate the supreme beauty of becoming a servant of the Absolute Truth.
The Eternal Kingdom of Followers
The concept of being a follower is not a temporary material designation; it is an eternal spiritual reality. Śrīla Prabhupāda states that because God is eternal, His instructions and the living entities who follow Him are also eternal. In the spiritual world, there is no rebellion; everyone is perfectly united in their obedience to the Supreme Lord.
- God is eternal, and His instruction is also eternal. And the followers are also eternal. There is nothing new.
- God is eternal, and His instructions and followers are also eternal. In Bhagavad-gita Krsna tells Arjuna that millions of years ago He spoke Bhagavad-gita to the sun-god.
- The whole Vaikuntha existence proclaims that everyone there is a follower of the Lord. The Lord is the chief leader there, without any competition for leadership, and the people in general are all followers of the Lord.
- There is oneness. God is one, and the living entities there, they are all followers, obedient of God. There is no influence of time, no influence of ignorance, no influence of passion. That is spiritual kingdom, the description of spiritual world.
The Glories of the Lord's Associates
The Supreme Lord is the ultimate aristocrat, and He never acts alone. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that whenever the Lord descends to the material universe, He is accompanied by His eternal followers—the demigods, sages, and pure devotees. The Lord holds these followers in such high esteem that He considers their satisfaction even more important than His own.
- A king is always accompanied by his ministers, secretaries and commanders, and Lord Visnu is also accompanied by His followers - the demigods, great sages, saintly persons and so on. He is never alone.
- Those who are constantly engaged in the personal service of the Lord are called anugas, or followers. Examples of such followers are Sucandra, Mandana, Stamba and Sutamba. They are all inhabitants of the city of Dvaraka.
- I (Krsnadasa Kaviraja Gosvami) have briefly described only some of the followers and devotees of Lord Nityananda Prabhu. Even the thousand-mouthed Sesa Naga cannot describe all of these unlimited devotees.
- Visnu wants His followers to be satisfied first. Lord Krsna says, mad-bhakta-pujabhyadhika: (SB 11.19.21) "The worship of My devotees is better than worship of Me."
Preaching and the Purity of the Mission
True followers of the Lord do not simply enjoy spiritual bliss in private, nor do they seek material prestige. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights that the genuine followers of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu dedicate their lives to actively preaching the Vedic knowledge to benefit all of mankind, while carefully avoiding the trap of desiring cheap, mundane adoration.
- An incarnation of the Supreme Lord never declares Himself to be an incarnation, but His followers must ascertain who is an incarnation and who is a pretender by referring to authoritative scriptures.
- A devotee of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu must engage in preaching in order to increase the followers of the Lord. By thus preaching actual Vedic knowledge all over the world, one will benefit all mankind.
- Lord Caitanya Mahaprabhu prayed to Krsna: My dear son of Nanda, I do not want any material happiness in the shape of many followers, nor immense opulence in wealth, nor any beautiful wife, nor do I want cessation from material existence.
- They (a class of sahajiyas) should better consider His (Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu's) instructions and, instead of seeking to be considered humble and meek, should refrain from criticizing the followers of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu who engage in preaching.
Elevating Specific Followers
The Supreme Lord is immensely compassionate and adapts His message to the capacity of the audience. Śrīla Prabhupāda describes how the Lord sometimes incarnates as Lord Buddha or Lord Ṛṣabhadeva to guide specific groups of followers. Even if these followers are initially unable to grasp the highest conclusions of the Vedas, the Lord expertly engages them in a process that brings about their ultimate benefit.
- Atheists do not want any God, and Lord Buddha therefore said that there is no God, but he adopted the means to instruct his followers for their benefit.
- The Bhagavata says that although in the Buddha religion there is no, I mean to say, mention of worshiping God, but Lord Buddha is himself incarnation of God, and he induced his followers to worship him.
- Although Lord Buddha is accepted as an incarnation of Krsna, the followers of such incarnations are not very advanced in their knowledge of the Vedas.
- Jains refer to Lord Rsabhadeva as their original preceptor. If such people are serious followers of Rsabhadeva, they must also take His instructions.
Conclusion
The Vedic literatures provide a profound paradigm shift for the conditioned soul: true freedom is not found in becoming an independent master, but in becoming a completely dependent and loving follower of the Supreme Lord. As Śrīla Prabhupāda explains, this relationship is not a mundane invention; it is the eternal reality of the spiritual kingdom, Vaikuṇṭha, where everyone joyfully follows the Supreme Personality of Godhead without a trace of envy or competition for leadership. When the Lord appears in the material world, He is eternally surrounded by His pure associates and anugas (followers), who serve Him in places like Dvārakā and Vṛndāvana. The Lord is so intimately tied to His devotees that He considers their worship to be even more important than His own. To spread this divine love, followers of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu reject the desire for personal wealth or a mundane following, dedicating themselves instead to the selfless act of preaching Vedic knowledge to the suffering humanity. Furthermore, the Lord's compassion is so vast that He personally descends as incarnations like Lord Buddha to guide even those atheistic followers who are not ready for the complete Vedic truth, expertly bringing them under His shelter. By understanding the glorious position of God's followers, the conditioned soul is inspired to abandon the exhausting pursuit of material dominance and joyfully take up the eternal, blissful position of serving the Absolute Truth.
