God's Eternality - The Supreme Reality of Sac-cid-ānanda
In the material world, every living entity is haunted by the inescapable reality of time. Everything that is created must eventually dwindle and be destroyed. Because of this constant cycle of birth and death, conditioned souls struggle to comprehend an existence that is truly permanent. The Vedic literatures, however, introduce us to the reality of the spiritual realm and the supreme eternality of the Absolute Truth. The Supreme Personality of Godhead is not a temporary manifestation of nature, nor is He subject to the deteriorating effects of time. Śrīla Prabhupāda meticulously explains the science of God's eternality, detailing how the Lord's form, energies, and pastimes are permanently situated in pure goodness. By understanding the distinction between our own eternality and the supreme eternality of God, we can free ourselves from temporary material attachments and revive our eternal relationship with Him.
The Form of Sac-cid-ānanda
The fundamental definition of the Absolute Truth is that He possesses an eternal form composed of knowledge and bliss (sac-cid-ānanda-vigraha). Śrīla Prabhupāda emphasizes that this eternal form is not a material body, but a completely spiritual manifestation that never undergoes annihilation.
- The Supreme Personality of Godhead is sac-cid-ananda-vigraha. Realization of impersonal Brahman is realization of His sat feature, or His aspect of eternity, and Paramatma realization is realization of His sat and cit features, His aspects of eternity and knowledge.
- The Supreme Lord Personality of Godhead is neither impersonal nor formless, but His body is nondifferent from Him, and therefore He is known as the embodiment of eternity, knowledge and bliss.
- All the pastimes of the Lord are eternal, blissful and full of knowledge, just as the form of Krsna Himself is eternal, blissful and full of knowledge - sac-cid-ananda-vigraha.
- Being the Yogesvara, His (Krsna's) eternal form is spiritual, a combination of eternity, bliss and knowledge.
The Chief Eternal
Vedic philosophy acknowledges that the individual spirit souls (jīvas) are also eternal. However, Śrīla Prabhupāda clarifies that there is a profound difference between the infinitesimal souls and the Supreme Lord; God is nityo nityānām, the chief eternal who maintains everyone else.
- Vedic information is that we are eternals, but there is another eternal who is chief eternal. That is God.
- It is stated in the Katha Upanisad that eternality and the living force belong to both ourselves and God. Although this is true in that both God and ourselves are immortal, there is a difference.
- The similar characteristics of the soul and Supersoul are that they are both conscious, eternal and blissful.
- Many verses can be quoted from the Upanisads and Vedas which prove that the Supreme Godhead is not impersonal. In the Katha Upanisad (2.2.13) it is also said: He is the supreme eternally conscious person, who maintains all other living entities.
Eternally Uncontaminated by Matter
Because the Supreme Lord is the controller of the material energy, He is never affected by its modes. Śrīla Prabhupāda points out that God does not evolve or attain perfection through meditation; He is substantially and eternally perfect, completely aloof from the illusions of the mundane world.
- In the beginning of Srimad-Bhagavatam it is made clear that the Supreme Truth is eternally uncontaminated by material touch. There is no jugglery of words and activities in the transcendental kingdom of the Lord.
- He (Maha-Visnu) is sac-cid-ananda - eternally in bliss - and thus He is not disturbed by sleep like ordinary human beings. It should be understood that the Supreme Personality of Godhead is in transcendental bliss in all stages.
- The perfect yogi knows that the Lord is eternally transcendental and is not materially affected by His presence in either a dog or a brahmana. That is the supreme neutrality of the Lord.
- So this is God; in the lap of His mother He is God. He does not have to become God by meditation, penance, austerity or by following rules or regulations. He is substantially and eternally God, and He has nothing to do.
The Expression of Internal Potencies
The Lord's eternality is not a static void; it is a dynamic expression of His internal spiritual energies. Śrīla Prabhupāda explains the specific potencies of the Lord—sandhinī (existence), samvit (cognizance), and hlādinī (bliss)—which facilitate His eternal enjoyment.
- Hladini is His aspect of bliss; sandhini, of eternal existence; and samvit, of cognizance, which is also accepted as knowledge.
- The Lord is eternally enjoying transcendental bliss by His internal potency, whereas the external potency is suspended during the time of the dissolution of the cosmic manifestation.
- The Lord is not directly attached to the creation, maintenance and destruction of the material world, for He is eternally busy in the enjoyment of transcendental bliss with paraphernalia composed of His internal potencies.
- Realization of the Personality of Godhead is realization of all the transcendental features - sat, cit and ananda, bliss.
Eternal Pastimes and Expansions
The activities of the Supreme Lord in the spiritual sky, and even those displayed on earth, are not temporary historical events. Śrīla Prabhupāda highlights that the Lord's name, form, entourage, and pastimes exist eternally, allowing devotees to meditate on them continuously.
- The Lord exists with dhama; His eternal name, quality, pastimes, entourage and personality are all a display of His different energies and expansions.
- One should not take the plural number of the word isvaranam to mean that there are many Godheads. The fact is that God is one, but He exists eternally and expands Himself in innumerable forms and acts in various ways.
- Thus Krsna is eternally engaged in His transcendental activities in Vrndavana with His friends, the cowherd boys and gopis, but sometimes He exhibits the extraordinary prowess of the Supreme Personality of Godhead by killing different types of demons.
- The most famous and formidable transcendental literature is the book named Gopala-campu. In this book the eternal pastimes of the Lord are established, and the transcendental mellows enjoyed in Vrndavana are completely described.
Returning to the Eternal Lord
Because we are part and parcel of God, our true happiness lies in reviving our eternal relationship with Him. Śrīla Prabhupāda concludes that by submissively hearing the Vedic literatures and dedicating ourselves to the eternal Lord, we become qualified to enter His eternal pastimes.
- The Lord is well known to the devotees for His eternity. The difference between worshiping the Lord and worshiping the demigods is that the worshiper of the Lord also becomes eternal.
- He (God) is more attractive to the higher transcendentalists who participate in the eternal pastimes of the Lord.
- You are eternally the director of the conditioned souls. It is because You are the original cause of everything that everything appears real. The ultimate reality is Your Lordship, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. I (Gajendra) offer my respectful obeisances unto You.
- We can actually understand Krsna, who is eternal, full of bliss and knowledge, simply by studying His words in Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam.
Conclusion
A comprehensive study of the Vedic literatures completely dismantles the idea that everything in existence is temporary. While the material cosmic manifestation is repeatedly created and annihilated, the Supreme Personality of Godhead is the absolute, unchanging reality. As Śrīla Prabhupāda meticulously explains, the Lord is eternally sac-cid-ānanda-vigraha—possessing a form full of existence, knowledge, and bliss. His eternality is maintained by His internal sandhinī potency, and because He is transcendental, He is never contaminated by the material modes of nature. Unlike the conditioned souls who must struggle through evolutionary cycles, the Lord is substantially and eternally God; He requires no meditation or austerity to realize His position. Furthermore, the Upaniṣads declare that while the living entities are also immortal, God is nityo nityānām—the chief eternal who supplies the needs of all others. The beauty of the Absolute Truth is that His eternality is not a static void. He exists with His eternal abode (dhāma), His eternal name, His eternal entourage, and His eternal pastimes in the spiritual sky. When a living entity stops seeking shelter in the temporary forms of material life and instead surrenders to the Supreme Lord by studying the Bhagavad-gītā and Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, they awaken their own eternal consciousness. Ultimately, the perfection of human life is to transcend the cycle of birth and death and return home, back to Godhead, to participate forever in the blissful, eternal pastimes of the Supreme Lord.
